Put my down for anyone but Mai. All I have to say is remember the episode where they traded memories ? Turned out Mai was never a shy girl, but always someone torturing those around her ?

Unless you figure Haruhaiko for a total masochist (not impossible really, he certainly lets himself get beat down) Mai will just make him or anyone else miserable. She's a one night stand at most, and don't let her have your right name or number.

Koito, and Reina you can work with, hell if he's patient he can even go for Kurumi.

Mai is a kind person by nature. Saying she tortures those around her is an exaggeration at best and disingenuous at worst. It's true there are times when her conduct is high-handed but that's because she is a deeply emotional girl who can't leave others. There is a reason none of her peers dislikes her.

Also, about the light novels. These are spoilers so read at your own risk:

Well thank you for the information from the light novel. I took a brief look to see if I could find an English translation or even the Japanese online and wasn't able to find it.

I'll have to disagree about Mai's character as presented in the anime. Sorry that I wasn't clear when I said it, but I never wanted to imply that she was abusive to everyone all the time, just that whoever she winds up in a relationship with she will abuse. She is pretty clearly abusive to Haruhaiko. Haruhaiko understands this and more or less says so when he talks about her with his envious friend at lunch. The fact that her abuse is focused explains why her peers don't hate her.

There isn't a translation as far as I know. I had to import the books to be able to read them.

They do have a sibling-like dynamic but the things that spur that strict behavior from her are mostly work-related, I don't think it can be equiparable to a romantic relationship. Before the series began there was only the two of them, and Haruhiko wasn't a very reliable person, so Mai actually had to pull his weight as well. She has been doing her best to get him to pick up the slack because she knew he was performing below his potential. Then there is the fact Haruhiko tends to sexually harass her, which you don't see much in the anime.
Her bio on the guidebook states her behavior towards Haruhiko tends to be harsh because he isn't reliable, and that's also the reason she doesn't want to leave him alone. I see that as another way for her to show kindness.
She has also been depicted as an highly empathic person. Episode 11 shows another side of her which is closer to how she acts whenever she has to take care of someone.

Fair enough. It doesn't look like I will be reading the light novels as my Japanese is non existent. I'll just chalk this up as a bad adaptation in the anime, where from the start she is the one bringing down the team. I will urge you to take episode 11 with a grain of salt for the same reasons. Being abusive to a child in her regular manner was likely a step too far for both the author and the adapters. Then there is the possibility that tiny (eight year old) Haruhaiko is not a romantic interest in her eyes at that point

Uh, how is she the one dragging down the team when Haruhiko is the one waking up late and taking forever to prepare his sealing ability? I mean, he does improve his skills over the course of the series but the implication is that wasn't the case at the beginning. He himself realized this since he said it himself, that's why he worked hard to improve.
Also, the purpose of episode 11 was to show her caring side according to Ishihara. She has moments like those in the light novel but there is only so much content that can be shown in a 13 episode adaptation, that's why they made it into an episode.

Lets see starting with the first episode she cost team the reward, by damaging school property. What's more he was the one who actually figured out the phantom's weakness and what needed to be done to seal it. His improvement in the anime wasn't in sealing but in summoning.

As to showing MAI's caring side in episode 11 that's a hard proposition for me to accept. She only took Haruhaiko in after a process of elimination. She wasn't jumping up to help him. Then during the actual episode, she was as at about as minimal emotional involvement as was conceivable. I remember when I was watching it thinking, hell I am damn near a misanthrope and don't particularly care to interact with children and I'd do more for a random kid I had no association with but was in my care, let alone a friend in that circumstance.

You mean the Oni phantom? He didn't figure out it's weakness? She was the one fighting it for longest time and actually had the the idea to immobilize it between those steel beams so Haruhiko could seal it without a hitch, albeiit breaking public property as a result. She does the brunt of the work by actually having to engage the phantom head on and weakening them so it's possible to seal them. Without her it would be next to impossible.

Nah, I disagree with that. It makes sense she'd be reluctant to take care of him considering she lives alone in a small apartment and has to take on many part time jobs in order to get by on top of school work and phantom hunting. Despite being sleep-deprived and overly stressed from overwork (badly enough to the point of collapsing if I might had) she still made time for him, even taking him to the park and paying attention to his emotional needs whenever he was feeling sad.
There is no doubt Mai is a wonderful girl and sorry but I don't think someone that dislikes her that much could take care of a child in the same way she did. It's easy to say things like that, but it doesn't carry much weight unless you've had a similar experience. After all, it's harsh situations like those that reveals people's true nature.

Water for the Oni. His analysis was what allowed it to be sealed not wedging it in the beams

Please personalizing these things isn't productive. I don't dislike her, I just wouldn't want her as a girlfriend or a wife. I have no doubt there are people she would be a good match for. The care giver argument is similarly flawed. Ask anyone that has wound up in a position of responsibility for a relative they don't particularly like

Its probably mai because on the other episodes when mai is in danger haruhiko always defend her even on the last episode which is 13 when hes powers were stolen he protect mai and they've known each other along time and their lonely childhoods/backstory are basically relating to both of them which made them more closer and on the ova or episode 14 haruhiko obviously likes mai and he tried to hold her hands but ruru ruined it,mai and haruhiko deeply cares about each other and do you remember the episode when haruhiko was a child and mai was his onee chan? When they were playing at the park haruhiko said "i wanted to stay with you" and from all of them mai is the one who deeply understands haruhiko and so as haruhiko deeply understands mai i get the point that your all rei and haruhiko ships i was too.. but when i watched all the series and understand them i knew it was mai even though i dont like it that much but im learning to like this ship and do you remember the part or scene when they were arguing to haruhiko when he was a child including rei, koito, etc he was in alot of pressure but mai stop them and she decided to calm him down and take care of him thats what strikes me to ship them more if u dont believe me watch it yourself and it would make sense and yes MY BRAIN and HANDS hurt thank yoh Uwu

I'm so shocked majority of the votes is Reina so far haha, was expecting Mai to be in top spot for Haruhiko. I'm glad though, because Reina is the best match.

But, of course fully expecting Mai because it's always what happens in anime.

Yet, as much as I like Mai, still hoping for Reina

Andy why Reina?
She and Haruhiko maybe it would work but i think he would be more happy with Mai ->

May and Haruhiko are for me mental on the same age/level..
Reina.. it feels if she .. nah.. no i cant explain that and my other reason is

Ruru reflects "the oppressed" wild part of Haruhiko
thats why i think Mai would complete Haruhiko in a relationship because he need that more than a quiet Reina, i mean maybe thay fit together but they dont complete them self together as Mai would did with Haruhiko (:
Oh and Mai cares so good for Haruhiko she understand him and allways puts a eye on him ( Can I say so in English? )
And Mai is my Bae :D <3
I agree with u Mai just wow

It’s the comments that supprise me as the votes go toward Mai witch I voted for and no it’s not for the boobs as everyone who disagrees with me seems to think and in the opening it doesn’t really lean towards anyone just because Reina and Haruhiko are together in one scene doesn’t mean anything heck it even implies he’s sketching mai. For the personality Reina may have some feelings but the show tend to make them seem very one sided as Haruhiko seems to see her as family so they do have a close bond a matching personalities but so does Mai even more so as the feelings are felt on both sides and haven’t ever heard the classic phrase opposites attract. For the show the like the whole last 5 eps were about Haruhiko and Mai and/or their relationship being clear and relevant don’t forget who Haruhiko is often shown carrying for, Mai and even in the OVA it was prominent don’t forget his reaction to the idea of her in swimsuit on the bus and the whole bridge moonlight scene and for my last point which I didn’t want to make as it goes against what I said first her appearance 😅, every time we see Haruhiko’s preferences to wards women caugh caugh the erm “dirty” magazines they all have held traits which Mai has so there is a physical and emotional attraction between the two so it seems the most likely and best character wise solution is this. I do agree with most of the Reina points as they do make sense but this is my opinion and sorry for the rant I don’t know when to stop talking sometimes 😂.
he got so close with Mai on the bridge then that dumb phantom ruined it
