Because I think the only people who would like or relate to this steaming pile of shit are either "Crawling in mein Skin" teenie boppers, hardcore otaku figurine collectors that need to justify their purchase, or people who are a bit on the "Forrest Gump" side of intelligence spectrum.

yo i have no idea what kind of life you've lead but a lot of the girls' struggles--particularly mato and yomi regarding kagari--are especially relatable. of course the breakdowns are dramatized to the max for the sake of entertainment but you'd be hard pressed to find someone this day and age who hasn't felt the way a lot of the characters did. it's probably one of my favorite parts of the anime; giving the characters problems that the audience can identify with completely, which further vilifies characters like kagari and saya for what they did to others. i myself was nearly in tears during the first episode because i knew exactly what mato felt like in that position.

mato witnessed brs kill dm, causes her to lose her shit and brs mirrors that by becoming ibrs who is just mindlessly attacking everyone without her original purpose to save their real selves.

BRS went nuts after Mato connected with her. Through some thinking and STR's help, Mato realised that she isn't iBRS and that iBRS needs to be stopped but iBRS wasn't listening to Mato. So she created another BRS (since she is her other she can probably do that) and took complete control of her. And you know the rest.
Basically, iBRS wanted to destroy the other world (as noted by Saya) and every other in it. Yuu lost to her so the only one who could stop her was BRS, so Mato created another one because iBRS couldn't be stopped/saved otherwise. That most likely means that the BRS we saw at the end isn't the same BRS from the beginning.

It's a new BRS, Matou killed her old other self and created it anew as you said. It's pretty clear.

I'm going to have to rewatch this until I understand what this otherworld is really about.

My take is: every girl's otherworld self fights, to blow off the emotional pain they can't handle themselves. The otherworld self has no feelings or consciousness, it just fights out of instinct. If it dies, every memory of all the events that caused the pain she's feeling are deleted. But they can't die all the time, because when an otherworld self dies, part of her host's "physical" self is destroyed, and if this goes on all that will remain will be an empty shell. This is why their other selves protect them, they keep them complete and together.

What happened was that Strength, Yuu's otherworld self, was so full of fighting spirit it went sentient the moment Yuu somehow managed to contact it. Strength was sentient, Yuu wanted to get out of the world that shat on her and (that's my take) if Strength died, Yuu's painful memories would be erased, but Yuu's entire life was nothing but pure pain, so if Strength died all that would remain would be an empty shell (end of my take). So Yuu and Strength swapped places, and Strength was happily living in our world while Yuu was eagerly playing the role of Strength's otherworld self.

Enter Mato Kuroi, whose otherworld self is BRS. Mato is a happy-go-round cheerful girl who is all BFFS4E with Strength and Yomi, who acts like that because she's burying her pain so incredibly deep within her heart that BRS ends up taking it all in an overload of power, and she takes it on all the other other selves. If this kept going, BRS would kill all the rest of the other selves so much that all the other girls' selves would be destroyed. Enter Saya, who found her otherworld self with Yuu's assistance. She knows the threat that BRS poses to the essence of all the other girls, so in an attempt to stop BRS's murderous rampage she is sowing as much pain as possible in order to make their other selves stronger.

Chariot and the little clunky girl that was the basketball captain's budding otherworld self were killed, taking part of their essence in the process. Saya is extra worried about that, but Strength thinks Yomi has been so stressed out she thinks Dead Master should be given a quick, merciful death in order to end her suffering, which wouldn't be so bad on Yomi's self because it hasn't been that long since they met and thus not much memories would be erased. But it doesn't works, because for some reason Mato ends up merging with BRS. Right when she kills Dead Master, who Mato thinks is Yomi. Mato flips her shit, and BRS becomes Insane Black Rock Shooter, who like the name says, is so ridiculously game-breakingly superpowered she's capable of even destroying the whole otherworld, devastating everybody's self in the process. (She's not insane though, she still conforms to the rule of every otherworld self having no emotions and only fighting out of instinct).

After Yuu's intervention, Mato realizes that no, the otherworld selves are not the actual girls, so she tries to get IBRS to stop. But she's not responding, so she takes matters into her own hands by creating another BRS and merging with her. Now that Mato-BRS is away from IBRS, she fights her, but at first she can't because she has to learn to hurt and be hurt, getting her ass handed in a silver platter as a result. Then, everybody else's other self reactivated because they all were crying for Mato at the same time, and this is what powered the multicolored cannon that Mato-BRS used to destroy IBRS.

After the final battle, Mato has learned her lesson. People hurt others, that's a fact of life, and there's no way to prevent that. So, just enjoy yourself and the company of others, and if someone hurts you, then take it like a man and deal with it. Anything you really can't handle, your otherworld self will take care of it, but don't abuse him because all the shit I just wrote would happen.

Now, the questions:

- Why did Mato ended up merging with BRS instead of just contacting her?
- When did Strength's soul separate from her?
- Why did Strength fall apart?

I think some of these questions will be answered with a rewatch, but for the moment, I think I have sperged enough about BRS. And it's nice that they give an actually good life message: you will hurt people and you will be hurt, so just try not to be a dick, take it like a man, and enjoy yourself. I had to learn this one too, and indeed it was an integral part of growing up. This series is extremely nice even though it was confusing as fuck (and I'm p. sure that one more chapter could do pretty fine to elucidate quite a few things) and I'm giving it a solid 9/10. :3

My problem with this series is that it is a bad influence on these girls.
Instead of teaching girls how to be emo, how about teaching good things? This is anime, but you can teach good lessons.

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!
It's the story of high school girls with their problems and dramas and no one cry in the corners. Rather, they all face their problems in the real world and the series becomes a positivist message.

Haibane Renmei stars with the SUICIDE of it's protagonist!
Even after death she faces her problems and solve them and no obvious catchphrase is said in the whole series!

Please, I beg you all.
Stop watching series like BRS and especially enjoy these shows and go watch something genuinely good.

Um, you kind of missed the whole point of the series, which was that "Growing up can be painful, but you have to take the pain and face your problems head-on".

It was kind of obvious, too, what with Mato going on about being unable to hurt others because she doesn't want to be hurt herself and all that...

Very very boring melodrama about people and events I didn't give a shit about.
I would say that the animation and music were really good but I won't. I mean it's obvious that there was alot of work put into the animation but I still couldn't get over the art style and it bothered me throughout the entire show. The art direction and animation during the fight scenes is nowhere near as good as people make it out to be, like I said it might've been technologically impressive but that doesn't make it visually stimulating, much like I didn't like the animation of FFXIII.
I guess the biggest thing was that the characters were just going on and on about completely uninteresting bullshit that made little to no sense. Ask me what the story was about and I'll go 'what story?' . It makes sense that they just made this anime as sort of an experiment to test out new animation techniques like with FLCL, but FLCL was awesome unlike this piece of crap. I give boring shit 3/10

Another question just popped into my mind.

At the very end of the first chapter, we see BRS being wtf-pwned by Chariot. Later, Mato says her memories of Strength are diffuse. Mato has no hard feelings for Strength. Could it be that BRS was actually killed at that point?

heres a link, http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/s/detailview.html?KEY=TBR-22200D

The Taiwan version lists English subtitles, and its a direct import from Japan, so this one will too right? even if i cant find it written anywhere on the site?

Up till episode 7, I feel that this anime is bad because of the alternate scene change between the real world and the other world IMO making this anime a little confusing. The battle scene is nonetheless quite awesome, I like the weapon design and such. For me, the anime seems to be progressively better but no better than great.

However, the ending is a little meaningful showing a very heavy friendship among them. It sort of made up the bad impressions in the previous episodes.

I can only give this anime a 7, no more but might be less. I personally feel this anime cannot have a season two as i feel it will be seriously bad and the ending was perfect enough to make another "thing" or "someone" to appear out of the blue.

I think I liked the character designs... and that was most of what I liked about the show. Some of the underlying message is good, but it feels way blown out of proportion and melodramatic.

But yay for rainbows, parts of this ep were trippy XD

Wait, when BRS was thinking that she'll keep fighting in this world, that was Mato's voice. Did Mato switch places with BRS? XD

Bad cg in the fighting scenes, whiny annoying teenage girls always crying, the character design was awful too... The actual design for the dreamworld fighters was good but the way it was animated looked so bad.

I for one thought it was amazing!
Yes, the pacing was very random, but to me that was the only problem

The characters were fantastic, the character designs were awesome!
The fighting was probably the best cgi I've seen in anime!
The music/sound was perfect.
The seiyuus were perfect.
The story was very touching, and pretty mind f*** at times.
etc. etc. etc.

So for amateurish plot pacing, I'm giving it a 9/10. Otherwise it would have been a 10/10!

Well that was a pile of ass.

Pretty much everything was terrible aside from the fight sequences, which I must admit were pretty cool. Then again, the BRS designs are perfect for such things.

Two tries to make something out of the BRS phenomenon, and two fails. Come on guys, someone needs to do something right at some point. Cut out all the melodramatic real world bullshit and focus around the otherworld and some shiny ass fights, that's what fits with these characters.

Way better than the OVA. Even though the character appearances were a bit better in the OVA (only talking about those which appeared in both of course), everything else was done better here.

For starters there was an actual story (though it was sometimes too cliché and overdramatic) and an explanation to what the other world is (now even the OVA makes more sense). I liked the overall concept.
The fight scenes were badass and the use of CGI effects were very well done.
The characters were good (though I didn't like Yomi here that much) and it was nice to see that none of them were really evil. The other selves were awesome, but the best of course was BRS, I especially liked her with the hood on her head. She is simply badass.
It was also nice to see that the anime focused more on Yuu than Yomi, I liked Yuu here more than in the OVA.
I didn't have much problem with the length, I think it was perfect, there couldn't have been more to add to the story, it was complete as it is.

The anime gets an 8/10 from me, 1 point higher than the OVA. What I wish to see now is a completly different take on BRS where the action would be in the center and no other selves and things like that, so cutting the whole emotional struggles and the school stuff. It should be only about BRS (of course she needs actual emotions and a personality). That would be awesome, I could watch all the action scenes without the other stuff. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this anime, but I would really appreciate an anime like that :)

I agree. They should just make an anime 100% based on the imaginary world.
Not only is the over the top drama done poorly, it is interrupted continually by jarring scenes from the imaginary world. We get the worst of both worlds: a real world drama that doesn't flow and imaginary battle scenes that lose their focus and intensity. I can almost nominate Black Rock Shooter TV as one of the worst paced animes I've ever watched...

Great series and finale. Loved the ending.

Sure a few aspects weren't so great and I will also admit confusion at various times, but great visuals and ending was great after all the emotional investment (crying). Was worried at one point that we would get to see Strength do some battle, but I was not disappointed.

Actually, I thought the fight scenes were a great way to offset so much drama. They turn this series from over-the-top chick flick into something that balances it with super badass battles. The drama might not exactly flow (though I thoroughly enjoyed it), but I can say with the truth on my hand that the fights alone are an entire reason why you should watch that.

The fights are the only redeeming factor. True. But, imagine if these fights were not constantly interrupted by poorly written drama. You wouldn't have sudden breaks in the intensity and pace of the battles, making them more exciting. At the same time, the poorly written drama may have been better if they just removed the entire thing, but it certainly doesn't help when supposedly emotional scenes are interrupted by fighting that just doesn't seem to make much sense, precisely due to it being interrupted all the time. It kind of ends up being some kind of vicious circle where nothing in the show excels.

Sorry, but just having the fighting is not an answer. You want 8 episodes of fighting between characters that have no emotions and no given reason to fight? If they had made that, you be on this forum complaining that the fighting is pointless. Or is that want you want? Then go watch some MMA. The real world drama is what gives the imaginary world characters their reason to fight. That's pretty damn clear. Without this two worlds theme, BRS isn't BRS.

What I'm saying is: no, the series was not perfect as we all hoped, and yes, the real world drama was way OTT; but removing that aspect is not the solution.
Maybe the solution would be to actually give those girls something to cry about.
However, then you risk an Angel Beats situation where the emotional trauma placed on the characters is so great (i.e. Yuri) you start to worry what the hell is wrong with the writers' heads.

For what it's worth, I did enjoy the series. I actually watched it for the first time all in one sitting. So, because I didn't have a week to wait and wonder 'what the fuck is wrong with that character' between episodes I got clarification almost instantly. I might do that with other series from now on.

I have to admit, compared to the rest of the series, this ep was considerably more enjoyable. Does not change the fact I hate the series though.

The drama was poorly handled and out of place, felt like they were trying to make every small thing in a teary moment and it was very frustrating to have to deal with.

The characters were just terrible, I hated all of them except for Mato, at least she was somewhat likeable.

I will give this series credit for its animations, the CGI they used for the fight scenes was very impressive and the art was great, but the action itself was a bit uneventful, it did not have any essence of excitement.

This is probably the longest it has ever taken me to finish a series this short. Normally I'd have it done in one sit in, but I had to take breaks in between every few eps and ended up taking 3 days to force myself to get to the end.

Since I really liked the "poem" about the little bird in the opening scene of EP1 I'm just gonna leave this here:

"Kotori tobu no wa, ao no sora
Umi ni utsuru wa,sora no ao
Ei sora no ao ni,sora no umi
Ei sora no ao ni,sora no namida
Namida no ao ni,kotori tobu"

"The little bird flies in the blue sky.
The ocean mirrors the blue of the sky.
The deep azure is heaven's ocean.
In the blue of the sky, heaven's tears lie.
In the tears of heaven, the little bird flies."

Kinda long...

I see it as a psychological show.
Other selves = girl's mind.
Other selves fighting = Girl stress
Death of other self = Girl went from stress to snap.
When the girl snap, they'll cut all ties with the subject of their stress.

The bad thing about this series is that Kuroi Mato, as a personality, causes BRS to lose her coolness factor.
I ♥ Black Rock Shooter but her alternate self is kind of meh to be honest. As someone who followed BRS religiously ever since her introduction, I am quite frustrated with this butchering of great characters.

Butchery? How does this show in anyway butchered BRS?

Black Rock Shooter is Black Rock Shooter because of Matou. If Matou is a better character, BRS won't be as badass/cool as she is.

Remember that otherself reflect from their original.

Matou change in the end, and at her best, she is like the person she wants to be. The little bird from picture book, Black Rock Shooter.

Matou worry about others, Matou deny the thought of worrying. BRS is Matou. Except BRS have a mind of her own, and she kills Matou's burden by killing other's worries for Matou.

The things that Matou goes through in life, she needs an otherself as badass as Black Rock Shooter to "share" her burden to not go insane. If it weren't for BRS, Matou would've given up on Yomi because of Kagari. If Matou wasn't such a optimistic character, BRS won't be as powerful as she is.

Black Rock Shooter
If anything, this series makes me love Black Rock Shooter even more. She was, to me, just a kick ass character from another dimension. After this series. I see Black Rock Shooter as a loving, protective, strong other self of her weaker counterpart.

The only flaw of BRS is that she's too selfish, if killing other's psychologically mean Matou's burden will be lighten, she'd do it without hesitation.

The amount of pain and suffering she's willing to go through for the one she love, the amount of wrong doing she's willing to commit, and in extreme cases, how she's willing to hurt the one she love to protect them... That, Is Cool. Much cooler than some fighter from another dimension with a big gun.

Essentially it boils down to our opinions of how this anime is executed. Personally I don't like over the top drama. I'm not saying Mato can't show signs of vulnerability but there's just too much of it in this anime. What I expect was a more mature side of Mato and basically I'm not seeing it.

I don't know about you and your tolerance of hysterics but I'm not about to launch into an essay defending my opinions about how much I think the human counterpart of BRS could be better.

Matou's a first year middle school student, she's at most 13.

She is immature, and the story is about the girls growing up, and in the end, she did grow up a little.

However, I do respect your opinion on this... So... I'll leave it at that. ^_^

I hate the term "forced drama", but if that term can be applied to anything, it's this series. I enjoyed nothing about this show except the character designs of Black Rock Shooter and a few of the other girls, sadly.

I was forcing myself to watch this since it was so short. I began watching after the 2nd episode came out, and from then I watched until episode 7. It has literally taken me 2 months to finally force myself to watch the last episode just to get it over with. I'm sorry if this seems harsh to any fans of this series, but this was completely terrible in my eyes.

Well this show managed to squander an interesting concept almost at every turn. I think the big problem here is the distortion of the emotional content. This anime takes everyday problems and then blows them up to such unbelievable proportions that everything becomes laughable.

The concept of these girls have this inner world to work out their emotional pain is really cool. The fights in that world and the design of that world are also very cool but the story fails to make any of it compelling. This is an anime that tries to have depth but it ends up feeling very shallow because it can't do drama for shit. I mean look overly clingy friends, concerns about friends leaving you behind, embarrassment over crushes, jealousy over friends having other friends these are all every day problem for teenagers. If having these problems really made people act the way the characters act in this anime then every teenager ever would be on the brink of an emotional breakdown at all times. If this show could have come up with a bit of drama that didn't seem completely blown out of proportion then this show could have been amazing because it had all the other components.

The animation, the art direction, the music it was all excellent but ultimately wasted on a bad story that carried no emotional weight. The whole plot felt very shallow and emotionally manipulative the way it blew every problem way out of proportion. This didn't completely ruin the anime but it took something that had the potential to be great and made it barely mediocre.

Ugh. For an 8-ep series, I was having a hard time just to finish this show
that I have to eat some noodles just not to get sleepy while watching it. lol
