This is it then. I felt the show was confused at times and it highlighted Ayano more who was an unstable character overall not just because of her sudden mental disorder.

Coming to the match I didn't think Nagisa would win since her Knee was injured, but hey maybe she won because Ayano hesitated in the end. But that would defeat the fact she said to her mother she loves badminton now.

Overall it didn't deliver and focused on Ayano and her mommy issues which were petty by the way. Ayano became a villain by constantly taunting Nagisa who did nothing by the way, but at the match Ayano was cheered more than Nagisa ( what was that, were rooting for the mommy troubled baddie).

I still don't get the Overall plot, but but but I will be very very very lenient and say I've seen worse anime and give 7/10.

Good finale, awesome match.

Great animation, production and direction for the final match. The only part that I sorta took issue was the one where they black out the screen only showing phrases with Nagisa and Ayanon panting in the background. The change was kinda jarring especially given that the match was so intense moments ago and all of sudden we're taken out of the action. They should've found a way to incorporate the monologues into the game itself so they could keep the excitement from the match going strong. Definitely not a bad idea, I can see what they were going for but the execution messed with the momentum of the game. Overall, great production though.

Congratulations to Nagisa for winning, that scene where she cries after winning, damn, just damn. :(

The scene where Ayanon thanks Elena was very heartfelt, I guess there's some redemption to be had.

First question, how faithful is the anime to the manga? I know that some of the character introductions were completely changed but is this match exactly how it is the manga as well?

A lot of people were defending Ayanon's character saying that the way she was acting was reasonable and justified. To all those people, what did you think of Ayanon's character post the match? If your interpretation of Ayanon was a cold, ruthless character fueled by some unknown desire to just win, do you feel her change at the end is justified? If so, how is the change that happened in this episode any different from what happened in the earlier episodes? She's learnt the same lessons she learnt in the early episodes. This is kinda why I call Ayanon's character inconsistent because she just seems to change to fit the needs of the story.

Overall, really good show. Fantastic production value, the matches were fantastic and a pure delight to watch. As a sports anime, it does have all the zeal and energy that I love but sometimes the drama is very overbearing to the point it kinda makes a dent on energy and excitement the show can create. The only other problem I have with the show is the way Ayanon's character is written which feels inconsistent as I mentioned above. I do know that the anime kinda messed up the character introductions and stuff so I don't know if me feeling Ayanon's character is inconsistent is a product of that or not.

8/10

not that faithful , it basically changed it anyanons mother was never at the game so she dosnt see her afterwards and anyanon loses still but she faints during the match .

and there was a whole event after the game with pink tails girls where an old famous guy from the badminton scene baits anynaon to play at a match where if she wins she can see her mom.

Also changed tons of 'how they won' by how much they won' and in some cases who won matches ; things like what connie said when they were at the buses never happened etc. right down to character personalities at times or even when/how they joined the story; IE The coach was already. "That random girl with glasses" Was her other best friend from childhood etc . it simply wasnt' a faithful adaption

7.5/10 show, great badminton action and the exceptional music really helped sell it. Plot was alright and the ending was satisfying enough for me. I got what I wanted, in the end.

I only just now decided to look for discussions for this show and damn, the mother is sure getting a lot of hate. I expected her to be looked down upon but not to this extent, lol. Seeing a lot of dissatisfaction over Ayano being forgiving to her mother, yet I was waiting for Ayano to eventually forgive her all this time. Is Ayano saying "I hated you" straight to her mother's face not enough for them? Honestly, if Ayano had started yelling and made a scene I probably would have audibly sighed out of disappointment for her. Half of my motivation for continuing to watch this show was my desire to see the end of Ayano's belligerent behavior by way of her finally seeing the error of her ways, and the intentions of her mother. Seems like some people have something against the concept of forgiveness itself and would rather have everyone suffer for every mistake they make, big or small; yikes. Personally, I'm more in favor of forgiving the mother than condemning her. Sure, she's useless as a parent but she's not a horrible person. She wasn't sadistic or a bully, she's just a foolish, selfish jerk who couldn't see that abandoning her daughter was a bad idea until after she came back and saw how detached Ayano was. In the end I think her intentions are what matter the most, and it seems like she really thought what she did was the correct way of getting Ayano to love badminton. People just need to turn off their rage boners for a second and try to empathize with other mindsets. To me, the hate for the mother just seems to be blown out of proportion, similar to the hate for Ichigo after episode 14 of Darling in the FranXX. Justified but exaggerated.

Didn't really care about the winner of the game, both of the girls deserve it in my eyes. I'm disappointed with how Ayano resolve things with her mother though. I rarely care about animation & graphics on the anime but i really love the animation on this show, it feels like watching a real-life badminton match so 7.8/10 from me.

What an intense final match!

I don't really like how they reasoned out Ayano's character in the end.
Hard for me to comprehend her character at all.

As expected, Nagisa won and she didn't even let Ayano get 1 set from her (at least that's what I saw and remember since they never mentioned the scores at the end).

Overall, I still enjoyed this anime despite the fault on Ayano's and her mother's characterization (like mother, like daughter I guess :v).

Will definitely read the manga as it seemed to have some changes as compared to the anime adaptation.

Totally grew to love Ayano as a character... she's so little cute and fiesty. Glad they kept her attitude after the final match and really made it a part of her real character rather than just a phase because her mom left her.

Side note this anime has the sweatiest anime girls I've ever seen. Can't wait for season 2!

It started off really strong, but then it slowly became boring for me. The badminton games were still fun to watch though. I'd have liked it more if Ayano was in another school, so we didn't have to see her as much. I liked Nagisa, but Ayano really irritated me, i just wanted someone to smash her head with a racket.

Of course they became friends aha... just because she lost a fight!
Ayano is such a bad bipolar character!

The kind that we'll be crazy about revenge behind her nice happy face. But na, won't do it at the end of course, except for joking! let's not ruin the "happy ending" setup.

This episode really summed up Hanebado for me. You see the side of Ayano that dislike and glimpses of the good old Ayano that everyone loved. The development is weird once again and it seems like at the end Ayano is the one who "apologizes" to her mother. She didn't apologize but she's the one that went and gave in, meaning that mom was right. Which is fucked up and unjustifiable.
The animation and production value has been stunning which helped this anime A LOT! with good writing, both story wise and characterwise this could have easily have landed a 9/10 score just because of the animation and intense matches. But sadly that wasn't the case.

I would like to rationalize like you do and give fair points to Uchika, if only to make her more human-like, but she left her daughter over fucking badminton and she doesn't regret anything about that. I think she deserves the worst.

Ichigo's moment in episode 14 of DarliFra doesn't even start to compare. Heck, the only questionable thing she did was a little emotional burst at the end of that episode, and that wasn't even a factor in the main conflict. Uchika on the other hand screwed up her daughter's mind, by conditioning her entire worth to badminton and by leaving her, not regretting anything and then trying to come back to her life with no intent to fix her past damage.

This last episode was nothing less than fascinating. All the different visual effects showing the struggle between the two, switching to black and white, turning the music off, so all we can hear is the two of them gasping for air, the match was so over the top, I haven't seen anything like this before.
And finally, as a relief from the heavy drama the episodes before, they resolved their issues, we got our well deserved happy ending.

Was this ending it predictable? Yes, it was (especially after some a$$ spoiling at ep 12 discussion).
But would I have wanted some grim, dark and twisted ending instead? No, I wouldn't.
Generally, people want to see a happy ending. Since there is no way there will be a second season what would be the point of some heavy depressing ending?

No matter who says what, it was the *perfect ending*. Everyone got what they deserved/needed (yes, Ayano needed this defeat, in order to be proven wrong in her belief that only winning matters), everyone got to be happy.

Now, we can argue if the *perfect ending* is bad, just because it is predictable. I think it had to end this way because everyone expected it to end this way, and to a certain extent you need to show the audience what they want to see, at least this was what I wanted to see.

About the whole series: It is not your everyday sport anime. I would say it is more of centered around Ayano and her internal struggles rather than badminton. You can like it or not like it. I think it has such a mixed reception, because it is a sport anime, that is not really for sport anime lovers.
For me who have seen quite a lot of animes, this series has been a breath of fresh air.
I don't think what this anime does has been done ever before. A sport (or even not sport) anime heavy on drama, but still not straight up depressing, focusing on a single character's internal troubles.
Also an MC straight up being a jerk. I don't remember the last time, I saw something like that (they usually just pretending to be one, or tsundereing, etc). I found it hilarious, how the once nicest girl on block was giving zero fucks.

I also found it very interesting, how they handled the 'big' drama, like they kinda didn't at all. Every time Ayano's mom appeared everybody was expecting 'shit's about to go down', but it never happened. Or Nagisa snapping and fking breaking Ayano's neck xd.
It is very rare in anime to see people peacefully dealing with their problems. Usually, they are just yelling at each other, then ooooh we just both misunderstood each other, and then tearful reunion.

Overall, I am okay with how they dealt with Ayano's and her mother's relationship. It was nothing so grand, just a short scene. Ayano kind of got over it: She didn't say she forgave her, rather let's just not hate each other, there is nothing more exhausting than hating somebody. And afterall Uchika did care about Ayano, I mean she came back, spent a couple of days with her, and even asked her to come to Denmark to live with her. But Ayano didn't forget the past and chose her current badminton club over her, so kind of had her 'revenge': "I guess this time, I'm the one left behind". In the future maybe the common enthusiasm for badminton will make a bridge between them, her mother didn't bother to build.
I like that they didn't try to redeem Uchika. If they did and Ayano would have forgave her and go live with her and Connie as a family like nothing happened, that would have really messed up both Uchika's and Ayano's character. Uchika is a character we can't understand, but well, I am no top athlete, how would I even understand. But still from our perspective she is a terrible mother and a bad person (there is a big difference between a bad person and a badly written character).

There has been some nice character developement as well.
Nagisa is the more obvious one, as compared to the beginning she is a lot more calm and collected, and improved her badminton play significantly, also she isn't a total ass.
Ayano in the end (after one heck of a ride) didn't reset back to how she was at the very beginning. Now she is a lot more self-confident, self-dependent, can stand on her own. Luckily her savagery hasn't gone anywhere, but now their interaction with Aragaki is only friendly rivals teasing each other. That final conversation was hilarious. :D

WTF, quite possibly the worst mother I've ever seen that wasn't portrayed as an outright villain, and everybody seems kind of OK with it. What terrible, terrible writing. It just torpedoed the otherwise solid finale for me.

No apology from her, no go screw yourself from Ayano, nothing. Seriously, took the show from a 7 or 8 to a 5 for me. Like I shouldn't have even wasted my time.

The drama was such a let down. This show could've been good if it wasn't for that. Also, if I got to like any of the characters at all. I DID like Elena, but she doesn't show up all that much and we don't learn anything about her.

The glasses girl takes care of her siblings, the blondie is confused, the no-face girl is a no-face girl who was a talented brother, Ayano is a crazyfuck... Honestly they didn't pick my interest at all.

Worst anime of the season for me, mostly so because it tried to be something good and ended up like shit.

It was good.. but not memorably good.. by next season i will completely forget about this anime...

I dislike Ayano's character.. only thing good i like is that when she's serious her eyes.. 😳😳 THOSE BIG GREEN EYES.. like "DON'T FUCK WITH ME I WILL DESTORY YOU"

But it seems like they should learn how to do rivalries from Scorching Ping Pong Girls

... and I'll repeat it over and over again, Nagisa should have been the protagonist... yeah, probably the show would have had the tipical idea, plot and execution of every spokon anime but I'm totally sure I would have enjoyed it way more that way.

Not gonna lie, this was the worst anime I've watched this season and probably the worst sports anime I've ever seen. So much build up and melodrama around Ayano's relationship with her mother, so much anguish regarding the way she abandoned her... all that resolved with a simple exchange of words and that's all... lets pretend Ayano's psyche wasn't damage during all these years... way too anticlimactic for me.

Not to mention that the way most of the characters were presented wasn't of my taste. The only ones I "liked" were Nagisa, the coach Tachibana and Riko a little bit. The rest were forgettable. But sadly, the focus was always on Ayano and her problems. Which was a pain to watch since I dislike her because of the attitude she had toward her teammates/"friends".

And regarding the last match, I liked it overall although seeing Ayano coming out of her doubts just because of a little speech from the girl she despised minutes ago seemed really "convenient" but that's just me. Aside from that and since I prefer hard work over talent, I'm really happy that Nagisa won.
Sadly, her victory seemed kind of overshadowed because the focus was so much on Ayano that I barely could feel anything, which is a big let down since a sports show need to provoke something in the people who watch said show.

I mean, I would have loved to feel a bit emotional when I saw her crying when she won...

I can really tell she deserve it because of the amout of effort she probably put in her training, physically and mentally speaking. Unfortunetely, we couldn't see such development because of course, she wasn't the MC.

Oh well, all in all, this series wasn't my thing. I respect all the people who loved it but I'm not one of them. 3/10

He needs to be fired for so much unprofessionalism.

Anyway, seems like the manga is thankfully different from that mess of an ending the anime had, so I guess I'll go check out the manga.

Yea ive complained about the coach since the first few episodes...He sucks at his job. He plays favorites hard and only cares about Nagisa.. Dude needs to go.. Fortunately Ayano gets a trainer(an actual badass) Now people want to claim they like the "hard work beats talent" when we've seen on screen Ayano train more than Nagisa has as a child/young teen.

So Ayano who's a badminton monster with pure talent who put in the hard work as well was beaten by Nagisa who's probably not even Serigaya's level(seriously she didn't even notice trick shots from Nagisa in the previous episode..Seriously?) with a bad knee? Uhh yea

I liked Ayano more than Nagisa. Her melodrama with her mother ended badly but since she was treated like shit for years and dragged into a sport she didn't want to be in I wanted her to destroy every person she came across. Dark Ayano was one of the few things I liked about her personality considering it's actually not a front

I'm glad I'm not the only one disappointed at Ayanon losing the game against Nagisa. I don't have anything against Nagisa but I don't think she's that good to actually beat Ayanon. I'm pretty sure Kaoruko can beat her to a pulp. So I'm taking Ayanon's loss was due to her temporary lapse in judgement and her lack of proper training since her last game with Nagisa.

I need an OVA with Connie and Yuika in it! Oh and Nozomi too! And more of !bully-Ayanon :'D

The match was great but after that, it was strange... it was a ok anime.

Great finale, and I personally overall enjoyed this a lot. Intense matches and the animation was pretty well done as well.

Might've focused a bit too much on the drama aspect, and the characters weren't the greatest, but that didn't distract me from enjoying it. Rather, I didn't think it was that bad.

9/10.

It amazes me how everyone is complaining about her forgiving her mother, when she didn't. She told her she love badminton and then when asked if she would go with her overseas she said...Nope.
What she did was give up on her resentment towards her mother.
Yes, she is a shit mother, but why should she allow her anger towards her to ruin her life, it's called growing up, a fitting development for a school show.
It's a much better ending to their tale than he holding onto her anger and telling her mum to f off, or completely forgiving her and going overseas. Either would have been been dumb.

It was more of the fact that the anime was building Uchika up to be someone who would easily put badminton over her own child, even if said child was sick, something that she confirmed with a rather weak reason for doing so and and didn't even regret anything about her decision, which was the basis for Ayano's dark personality for the latter half of the show. If anything, it pretty much made her hatred towards Uchika justified.

To see it let go without any sort of heart-to-heart between the two just felt like all of the drama and build-up to their confrontation was for nothing. It's even more so because no one even tried to help Ayano with her issues, so for her to suddenly forgive her mom like that made her personality change nearly pointless.

If I was Ayano, I would have poured gasoline on the mother and lit a match. I would have said "GTFO or I flick this towards you. You've never had a problem running away, so this should be easy for you right?"

The mother was right and the BEST SOLUTION is to always abandon your child.

Im gonna pretending I never watched that ending and that Ayano slapped the shit out of her mother when she invited (again) to come with her and then moved on with her life, badminton and friends.

My feelings exactly...

The anime was great up until the ending, which I wholeheartedly agree was complete and utter trash. Can't believe Uchika was basically forgiven like she hadnt done anything wrong by abandoning her child without a word. Ayano's "revelation" during the match was so unbelievable as well. It just happened to facilitate the "feel good" ending and felt incredibly unnatural, especially with the huge issue of Uchika still looming over her head.

Such an an absolutely and incredibly unsatisfying ending that ruined and really dragged down what was otherwise a very good anime..

Okay, now I'm caught up with the manga (after cutting on some sleep and reading 13+ volumes in like 3 days), I can see the good and the bad of this anime adaptation more clearly.

First, I now see why the anime decided to change some things compared to the manga. In my perception, ~50% of all the changes were indeed changes for the better, but the other 50% failed pretty horribly.

Like, the beginning of the manga is not just light-hearted and full of fanservice, but outright silly, if you ask me, and has the same feel I get from trashy harem manga or something. And Ayano's character at the beginning severely lacks realism and relatability because no, I don't believe people that naive, flaky, ignorant and entirely helpless can exist unless they're brain-dead or something. That didn't feel like a human being at all in the beginning, but it got better, quite a bit better. Frankly, if I didn't know beforehand it'd get better, I'd drop this manga after the first volume.

But since I know, I powered through and found that the anime did change some points and scenes for the better: like, in the manga Nagisa doesn't remember the middle schooler who destroyed her; I think it makes much more sense that she'd not just remember but would see that face in her nightmares. Or the scene where Ayano meets Connie for the first time (frankly, I found the buying flowers thing in the manga pretty ridiculous). Despite some people complaining that the supporting cast in the anime are basically non-characters, they still see more development than in the manga, and the thing the anime did with Ebina and that senpai was pretty good. That is, some (and I emphasize the word 'some') of the added drama was well-placed and acceptable. Dark Ayano and her edge queen tendencies are a good thing, in my opinion; they might look to be too much in the anime, but they do exist in the manga as well, as her 'Shindou' persona, as Rui (one of the future rivals) calls it, and they're enjoyable as hell, to me, at least.

Now, to the changes that were not so stellar. First and foremost, it's what they did with the Mom drama. They took it too far and couldn't even resolve it in a not-rushed way.

Second, the match between Nagisa and Ayano. I simply don't understand why not follow the manga for it and resolve it like it was resolved in the manga, with Ayano fainting due to running out of stamina because, caught in the moment enjoying the fight, she wasted her stamina on a wrong style and unnecessary bating, basically feeding Aragaki freebies.

Third, lost and cut out characterizations. I don't think we lost too much from Noriko-chan (Ayano's other friend) being cut out of the anime, but, for example, the characterization of that coach, Tachibana, did suffer a lot, basically making him a stupid detestable character when he's definitely more tolerable in the manga. When he starts playing favorites, Uchika's friend who got him the coach job gives him a stern talking-to (along the lines that quickly summing Ayano up with the word 'talent' is not the way to go because no one starts out as a superb player from the moment they take up the racket, and Ayano is that good because she invested appropriate amount of effort and time to become that good, and in that she's not different from Aragaki and his attitude shouldn't be different either, he's not a personal coach but a coach to all of this school's badminton club) and it works and he sees his mistake and mends his ways. In the anime he only worries about Aragaki's knee in the interval and completely ignores Ayano which earned him my hate as an incompetent, but in the manga he properly goes to talk to Ayano too, give her advice and even sort of apologize by saying that he probably could've and should've taught her more as a coach, but the two of them are only starting (as a coach and his ward). And he worries about Ayano even after she went to train under Viggo, kind of watching her game when he's supposed to watch Aragaki. So yeah, not that bad of a guy, actually, but the anime doesn't show it.

Wait till you see Nagisa vs Connie. That's where ridiculousness and plot armor for Aragaki soars to new heights. It all feels so forced and unnatural and plot contrivance-ish in the worst traditions of below-average cliched spocons... like the mangaka is trying entirely too hard to sell an ordinary, if muscular and brazen, girl as a genius and a worthy rival when the only thing said girl really got going for her is that she's the mangaka's favorite... Seriously, every game where Nagisa wins (or even puts up a close fight) against a higher caliber player feels so strongly like an asspull - and a much bigger asspull than anything Ayano pulls off, at that (and we know Ayano pulls off some crazy stunts). If I had to determine why, it'd be probably because a. Aragaki doesn't have a background that could warranty, even a little, why she's supposed to be a genius (the least the other people called geniuses have is that they all started very young, all had pro level coaches like Uchika or Rui's parents, all invested unimaginable time and effort which is impossible to catch up to for an ordinary girl like Nagisa who only has muscle and power and didn't start as a toddler); and b. even I, a casual watcher/reader who doesn't know much about badminton, am not at all convinced that hitting harder is all it should take to bring down opponents that are clearly overflowing with high grade talent, game sense, speed, reflexes, brains, tech and every other aspect imaginable. Oh, and making a jumping smash on a busted knee your winning shot? A genius idea! How did no one think of that before? Oh, it's probably because they're NOT nearly THAT dumb? Just finish destroying your knee already if you want to destroy it so badly and go stick to the sidelines, jeez.

To elaborate on powerups that feel like total asspulls when it comes to Aragaki: Aragaki has a terrible eye for whether a shuttle is in or out, but it magically and abruptly fixes itself in her match against Connie allowing her to make precision shots. In comparison, Ayano may switch in and out of her 'Shindou' persona when she needs a powerup, that is, she basically becomes a badminton killing machine running on pure instincts, reflexes and talent, but those techniques that are almost automatic are fully justified with her whole background and her training with Uchika since she was a toddler, AND even in that mode she doesn't suddenly get a super heavy smash that can rip through the net like it's thin paper or anything - no, she keeps consistently lacking attack power due to her small frame even when her focus tightens to the limit and rape faces are busted out. Unlike Aragaki, who gets amazing jumping ability or magically fixes her terrible eye for outs out of literally nowhere. Puh~leease.

This anime was going to give him a 9 but just seeing that ayano forgives the mother, a 5 nothing else, all an unreal twist, I enjoyed it so much and was my favorite ayano character, they ruined it in a few seconds.

Hell, it's over, finally! And with all those cheesy things like happy-end and cries, yay!

The series had potential but they would have to scrap all that edgy Hanasaki character and all of her stupid background, it was interesting maybe in one or two episodes but seeing it through all the series it was plain suffering.

The action was still nice and all, and other characters were fine but all that family drama overshadowed all other good things. Didn't really enjoy this series much in the end.

THIS. Exactly!

I would have accepted an ending to the game with Ayanon losing because she ran out of gas, and not like what happened to the anime; as if Nagisa figured all of Ayanon's gameplay techniques and managed to outsmart her without losing her kneestamina. I mean Ayanon has been playing against her super champion mom since a kid? She's the genius yo!

AND THE BUSTED KNEE! I cannot believe her knee was even fine after the game. What the effing fuck! Like nothing happened. Geezus.

And now that you mentioned it, I'll probably skip that game between Nagisa and Connie. I love Connie. I can only accept her losing against Ayanon and no one else.

I'm not a sports fan, but this was fun to watch. Intense matches and sweaty thighs. What's not to like?

Ayano best girl with best attitude.
