THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
For those of you who were waiting for some serious plot advancement... here it is! This entire episode was devoted to the dialogues between Tsugumi and Yuzuki. This episode requires extensive knowledge of the Japanese language to understand the situation since it is all talk, but I'll try to translate the parts I do understand.

Yuzuki tries to forget about the Jigoku Shoujo and lives her life as a student. However, one day, she realizes that nobody around her knows about her own existence. Frightened, Yuzuki is relieved to know that at least Shibata Tsugumi still admits Yuzuki's existence. They then go into a long talk about destiny and stuff that I don't really understand, other than Tsugumi seems to have given up all hope of stopping the Jigoku Shoujo. Tsugumi's conclusion was that Yuzuki is no longer a person of this universe.

When Yuzuki returns home...

Looks like there's a season 4 coming if they don't warp this up quickly. Next episode is gonna be about her death. That leaves 1 episode to end the whole season.

I didn't like the fact that they took so damn long for the actual plot to kick in. Oh well... next episode will be about Yuzuki's childhood, and supposedly, her death. I guess it makes sense why we've never seen Yuzuki's parents before in the anime, although children living by themselves is not rare in anime.

hmm I think the timing is not bad for a 26-episode series.. it needed to tell how jigoku shoujo(or should i say the system) showed yuzuki all those happenings and finally make her give up.
i cant wait for the next episode~ i just love yuzuki, and was shocked when enma ai said that the corpse is yuzuki.. >.<

yodlormak said:

if we consider shibata's words as facts, yuzuki was just imagining she talked to her parents. well, basically everything that happened after ai took over her body was probably just an illusion(it could be before ai took over her body, or after ai left her body.. not sure)

actually this episode wasn't too hard. the language is very easy, but the mindset is very hard.
summarizing what tsugumi said, it's something like this..

here are some screenshots i just needed to take!

My problem is that neither of the other two series took this long for actual plot development... the first season started at around 21 or 22; same with the second season. This season, though, started at 24! This gives it only three episodes for the actual plotline, which is way too short if you ask me. Plus, many of the recent episodes pale in comparison to the earlier episodes of this season.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

This episode is in between "informative but dull" and "emotional"
But because I love mystery so this ep. is rather good for me...but I don't know why I do not sympathize Yuzuki. The most emotional scene is when Tsugumi speak out her dad's name and then tears dropped on their picture.

Oh I didn't think of that, I would like to say poor Yuzuki but I couldn't care less well she already bite it so what the use. Anyway I would rather ferried ppl to hell than someday finding myself being ferried to hell, I would take the job no matter how much I hated it.

Great episode. So Enma Ai recruits dead girls and tries to make them her successor. That's not that senseless and even a good concept overall, too bad it starts at episode 24 indeed. I wonder if Yuzuki will ferry Enma Ai to Hell and take her place now, but I guess it will have to wait after the flashback episode on Yuzuki's childhood and dead.

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

Holy shit motherfucker. I didn't see that coming. So, Yuzuki wasn't real in the first place.

So basically, Yuzuki was long dead and her existence was just an illusion. By the looks of the dead body. I'd say it was like a seven years old. Just like when Enma Ai died.

Enma Ai recruits dead girls to become her successor which is a great concept.
Oh god, I love this series.

This sounds possible. But it will be too harsh on Yuzuki if it's true... So Ai gave up and intentionally continued her job as Jigoku Shoujo... well, I saw this far. It was really sad to hear that Hajime has given up too at some point. Yes, I was really thinking that he's wrong back in the time, but after all he was pursuing what he was thinking of right. Ai herself has given up too... This Hell Correspondence system sounds too depressing now... not that it didn't back in Season 1 or Futukamori, but still... Yuzuki seemed like a person who could actually do something about it.

lonehunter88 said:

Tsugumi also says that she is just an observer, not destined to be a Hell Girl. the reason the system made her an observer was most probably to make her dad give up. the system(or the devil i guess) knows that if Hajime didn't give up, he might cause a disruption in the system.

For some reason I've almost forgot about the devil... probably because we haven't seen him back from the start of Futukamori. I blamed Ai for being such a bitch over this episode, but it's actually the devil who's in fault in first place. I hated him from the start of the series, and it was for a reason. So Hajime really had a chance to change something, be it one or another way(obviously he didn't gave up after Season 1)...

HAJIME-CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

Wah, no wonder Tsugumi's gotten so worn down. Hajime-chan got worn out! T_______T Hajime was always there to lift her spirits and I guess after being unable to stop so many people it just totally ruined them both... THAT'S SO SAD.

I thought, for a moment there, that Tsugumi was able to get out of the Jigoku Shoujo situation and Jigoku Shoujo was making everyone she knew and loved disappear and for a bit there I was thinking that's what happened to Tsugumi and that's why Hajime wasn't around... hah, that'd almost be happier to hear at this point than Hajime fighting the system only to come crashing down from being so tired of trying...

Ultimately, I reacted more emotionally to that last big twist than I did logically. Logically I did a kind of, "Whoa, that's awesome, should have seen that coming," but emotionally I did, "HOLY SHIT. WHAT. WHAT. WHAAAAAAT. That's terrifying, oh my god talk about my worst nightmares freaking ever that you wake up one day and start to live your life and leave your house and go to school only to find out no one knows you and come home to your house all abandoned and broken and your room with your dead body in it."

I'm kind of bummed we only have two episodes to go; but I definitely am looking forward to this death's back story. Yuzuki died clinging to a big ol' teddy bear? That's just sad as all hell.

Wow what an intense episode! It was full of story so it was really great, was a bit confused at the beginning, but it all made sense later on! So Yuzuki is dead now and she's gone years in to the future looking at the state of the building and she'll probably now will try to find a way back or will take over the role of Jigoku Shoujo!

What a great episode up to the last 2!

Well, this is a good development, something that I never thought season 3 was capable of.

It all happened so fast though, through the duration of only one episode. If they had started doing the stuff in the episode a while ago and had it slowly advance to where it is now, it would have been better.

That being said, they're going to have to do a LOT with these next two episodes to get me to change my mind about this season at all.
Some parts of this post may be exaggerated.

I had already semi-spoiled myself with this before but it's still so sad, having your whole existence wiped out and all that thrown right into your face in a short time...

This plot development is coming too late =/ The last two episodes will determine whether this anime is worth 7, 8 or 9.

I'm grateful to the next episode for explaining Yuzuki's story, because I really need it.
I got the Tsugumi and Hajime's background (which I love and fully agree with) but I don't get this thing about Yuzuki. When she started living the illusion? I think when Ai took over her body.
I guess so because being Yuzuki a soul wandering between the two worlds her spirit could get in touch with her and make her living the dream.
Maybe at the other side of the gate when Ai's body really returned during the six coin lantern festival there was her real self. I don't know.

Mind = Blown

HOLY SHIT IT ONLY TOOK 23 EPISODES FOR THE PLOT TO FINALLY GET GOING!

I'm disappointed how long it took till the climax. In season 2, the episodes started to get really good around episode 21. This time there's only going to be 3 more episodes to finish the story. Let's hope the ending isn't rushed.

5/5 for the epic plot twist

I am not all that quick at catching this stuff, but I'm surprised that so many posters were shocked at the revelation.

I thought Shibata's rather cold attitude was weird back in episode 20, makes sense now.

Her parents not answering Yuzuki's calls back in episode 21 made me suspect that maybe her parents aren't real.

It was made really obvious something was off when Yuzuki confessed to the nice twin that she can't remember anything from her childhood in episode 22. I thought she was implanted fake memories, but didn't actually think she was dead the whole time... lol

No Yuzuki is a supernatural being like Ai she was even before Ai came back, that's the hole reason she came came back that she sensed some1 like her exists & she isn't illusion but her life is a illusion, that she forgot that she died & her emotions made her life, i mean she subconsciously did what Ai's companions did to get to be in the school created their own lives in human world all their papers about their past & present suddenly appeared u know what i mean

That revelation is like bitch slap to the face by super human to human

so she was like ghost in school but all thought she is real u can also compare this with s1 possessed toll ep where ai saved both shibata's, she effected neany ppl's lives but new none of them remember her

I kinda imagined this outcome, she was already dead the opening was full of Yuzuki's photos of her childhood teasing you with that, like in Tokyo Magnitude 8 when they showed Yuuki's photos in last episode and previous chapters he was already dead.

Holy hell, turns out what I was thinking all along was right, that all those girls in the ED song are all Jigoku Shoujo candidates of some kind, and then they disappeared one by one, until only Ai is left, because they cannot accept reality.

What a painful reality for Yuzuki, turns out that she was living a lie all along, clinging to an illusion which can never be, how sad.

On a lesser sad note, a little Ai moe fanservice scene :).

Okkk, now this is a plot heavy episode even though it was mostly dialogue. Damn, this is actually sad. She was already dead and everything was an illusion?? Then why was Tsugumi able to talk with her, is she dead as well? And who is Ai's grandma? Too many questions.

Damn, holy shittt
living in an illusion is too sad to know and accept the truth, I can't imagine I'm still school, learn and playing with friends, thinking about the future, facing exams hard, when I wake up and go to school no one knows me. My existence is removed, still not accepting the fact, I came home to see my place of residence was abandoned and unkempt, when I opened the door there was my young corpse hugging a doll, turns out i've been dead a long time.
Arghhh very sad.

*Note: Ik it seems silly to include content warnings for a show like this, but I do it just in case!
Usually with plots like this I can figure out what's going to happen, you know, reasonable deduction. However, this was a beautiful build up, and an even more magnificent twist. Of course it's hard to keep every secret from the viewer; I think my partner and I started picking up on it(The twist) an episode or two ago, but the quick build up and tension was fabulous.
