I really enjoyed this episode. The details in this animation are superb, and the whole flow/pace seems to work well. I'm looking forward to next episode :)

I really love the art.

Wow, I'll have to rewatch the episode. The first time all my attention was on the gorgeous art. The backdrops were easily on par with the likes of 5 Centimeters Per Second.

They changed quite a bit from the manga, but this might be a good thing. No panty shots thankfully. D:

animation is really something else, the background look so real is scary
is like the animated characters are played on top of a green screen and video of the real world is used for the background
looking interesting so far

Well, OP/ED wee nice. The anime had a nice relaxing feeling.
The story was not so interesting, though it was not really boring, either.

Now on to the art: It's pretty, yes, but on the other hand it's pretty disturbing to have that low quality drawings in contrast to the BG photos.

Yes, PHOTOS. Those are no drawings. They are photos taken from the real world. I have seen this quite a few times in some animes, but it was never as obvious as in this production.

I hate it and IMO it's rather cheap (though it could cost quite a bit of money to travel around shooting all those BGs).

The most disturbing example was the drawn cars and a bit later in one BG there were real cars parking at the bottom of the screen. The difference was so shocking. I would at least go for pictures without cars in it.

I really have to protest against comparing this to Byousoku 5 Centimeters.
In 5cm they used photos as a present to make those amazing BGs with the computer, but they didn't just use the photos itself (without much changes).
Byousoku 5 Centimeters is far superior because they blend those BG perfectly with everything else, but here we have a huge contrast between real photos and the normal character art.

It's not my intention to make this bad. Using photos and letting animes characters walk in those may be a form of art in itself, but I just want to open some eyes to prevent from hyping the art into the sky, because it's not really awesome skill to make photos and use them as BGs.
It's looking good, yes, but it's just the same as in a normal real movie on TV.

Anyway, 4/5. Looking forward for more.

The background of this series is simply astonishing! The story didn't really grabbed me and the pacing was rather slow for my taste, but this 1st spisode was still pretty good, and I can see myself really enjoying this series. Hope they can maintain this type of art/animation throughout the entire series =)

I liked it better when it was called anime and not photoshop slideshow.
Character art is HORRIBLE and the backgrounds look like they were edited photos with a photoshop filter. I guess that all the production money went also in the backgrounds or a copy of Photoshop.

1/5 dropped

This is looking quite interesting. The story seems to be allright so far, though the pacing was a bit on the slow side. And then there's the animation. This is something you don't see often and it sure looks awesome, but as said before displaying the 2d characters over a 3d background doesn't look right.

The backgrounds look pretty, but they don't blend with the characters at all. It's kind of disturbing.

This might be good, and it's certainly my genre, but I'm not getting my hopes up because of how awful the first series was...

I didn't like this. I mean, it was OK. But I just couldn't stop thinking how the first chapter of the manga was so much better. It was funny, touching and the love story part actually had an interesting coflict. Here, it just, eh... happened. You could see that Sora is a charming girl, instead of the other chatacters telling you how charming Sora is.

Also, I don't really like the art/animation. And it's not because it's very different from the manga, which, as you can tell from the promotional art, is just BEAUTIFUL. It's because they only did all those pretty backgrounds to distract people from the fact that they almost didn't animate anything, and what was animated, looked awful. Just look at the scene when Sora is "talking" with her father besides the tree. I mean, it's like watching one of the worst episodes of NHK ni Youkoso, but with pretty backgrounds.

HOWEVER, it doesn't mean that I won't watch this. This is just the prologue, and the main story can be better. Even if it's different from the original story. After all, the writer is the manga writer herself. I strongly recommend everybody that liked this to read the manga, and any other story from the Someday's Dreamers universe. It's sooo much better than this . I just hope that the scanlations for Natsu no Sora go beyond chapter 2 :(

EDIT: I checked the scanlators' IRC channel ( irc://irc.rizon.net/nobinobi ), and apparently, they need editors who can work with Jump-quality scans. Just in case somebody is interested and CAN actually help them.

Once again Osamu Kobayashi shows why he's one of the most polarizing figures in anime. I'm curious what the Japanese reaction to this is after the rather interesting reaction to his last work (the infamous fourth episode of Tengen Toppan Gurren Lagann.) I really do wish he'd get his character designs in line (like he mostly did in Paradise Kiss) before he goes to the new-age-rotoscoping tricks though.

Overall a so-so episode. Not quite as good as the original series's first, however.

I have to agree with some of the positive sentiments concerning the background work. A lot of it looks really nice. However I'm a bit saddened by the character animation. They were oversimplified in comparison to the backgrounds so many scenes didn't look quite right. The story was a bit on the slow side but it was still OK.

I'm glad to see Takefumi Haketa is back on music for the show. I loved his work on the previous series and can't wait to hear more of what he's produced.

Correct, you don't have to have seen the original series before you watch this, they have nothing to do with each other.

Anyways, I loved it, as I expected i would. This definitely looks like its going to be better than the first series. The animation is very unique, and even if the actual animation doesn't suit in with the background photo shots, it looks good most of the time anyways.

This show is extremely slice of life so far, the animation and so forth just amplifying that atmosphere. It's been a while since I've watched something this slice of life, but then again this is only the first episode, lets see how it goes once Sora gets into Tokyo.

Oh, and I am loving the OP song.

Well they're not gonna change the main characters name just because its the same as another character from a previous anime title from the studio @_@...

If they changed the main characters name, the title would lose it's effect. It's Summer's Sora (Sky) :)

Meanwhile I thouroughly enjoyed the beginning of the first Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto series, this first episode did not seem too good.

I do not like using photos as BG, if they have not been edited to blend in well with drawn art. This is a major problem for me when I watch this anime, since it distracts me from the story and the characters. Actually, in a few scenes it looked pretty good, but most of the time it was annoying.

Also Sora is not as cute as Kikuchi Yume, which is sad. I was really looking forward to this series and it left me disappointed. I'll still give it a couple of more episodes to see if it gets any better. Maybe some magic still save this anime..

I was one of those, "oh it's related to a previous show, I should watch that before starting this one."

In the end, that may not have been the best of choices. The show so far has not stressed any need at all to have seen the original and now It's truly hard not to compare the two shows.

The original show had a cute country girl going to the big city to start her training as a mage. And one of the things on top of that is the first arc they kept hinting that she was a prodigy of sorts able to do amazing things. (Though that part was completely forgotten before the show even made it to the half way point.) It was 2002 art so not amazing and you can see the budget saving techniques everywhere but it was still a cute and fun story.

The start of this show we actually meet our mage before she has left for training. Again it's some country girl with only a mother. And we'll see how she does in the city next ep. I liked the description that this episode was more of a prologue. But it really didn't tell us much about what to expect from the rest of the show. And at best I would say the background pictures is a neat idea, but so far I haven't seen to many examples of it being anywhere near the lvl of Makoto Shinkai's work. And the actual character designs and animation aren't what I would call deserving.

I'll probably give the show 2 more episodes after that it's up to it to keep me around.

Do we live to watch Anime, or watch Anime to live?

My thoughts exactly. I was first thinking that people were sarcastic about the "gorgeous " animation but then I realized they simple didn't notice. I have no idea how since it's pretty obvious that animators were lazy as hell. I mean using real life pictures as a background, who the hell does that? It makes everything that is actually drawn look weird cuz it's sticking out too much. Therefor, animation cannot even be compared with the 5 cm per second. As for the story, I must say that I turned on the episode and after 5 minutes turned it off cuz of the animation only. I'll probably give it another try in next few days.

that was nice. i'm really into the art, the backgrounds are simply amazing, the character animation could use some work, though. i think the photos fit in as backgrouds pretty good, although it's obviously not perfect.

I've always had Sketchbook's Sora in mind every time Sora was talking.

Never read the manga but after that maybe I should give it a try.

And yet another awesome OP by thyme!

Well as far as I can tell (and many have pointed out), the backgrounds are actually, Real Photos. So they take real life photos and slap them on the background. That's why they look so nice/real. It think it's a really great approach, it's simple, and effective. Only drop back is, they can't make the background animated unless they draw it in; which ends up being the same drawing design as the characters.

Can someone explains to me what happens at 19:57 (when Sora's truck leaves)? The truck exits off screen to the south-east, and then her mother turns north-west and starts waving and shouting her name. Is this an animation error, or am I seeing something wrong?

Some of the animation was actually very bad. Watch the wheels on the potato harvester- Whoa, they are flopping all over the place - and the plane taking off - ouch!

I was assuming that the soft drawn characters was done on purpose to contrast the photo bg's, but now, i'm not too sure.

anyway, I can tell that the story will keep me into it. The portrial of Hokkaido rual life was intresting to me. I guess it will be a while before the story brings us back there. I liked the Scottish folk music they used as she rode through the contryside.
