Ah yes, the two Gatchans chapter adapted at last. You know, I honestly forgot this wasn't adapted yet, and I think it's probably because in the manga this happened before Obotchaman was introduced. Like, way before. The same can be said for next week's episode as well if I remember correctly. I'm not really sure why they waited so long to adapt this, but oh well. Two Gatchans is a pretty random development anyway, and the chapter where it happens feels like a one-off except it's not. I suspect the anime staff felt similar as the struggle to stretch this into a 23 minute episode was really obvious. We had tons of filler in this one. The Kurigashira scene, the extended police car chase around and in the stadium, we even got a Gatchan-themed insert song! Also I see this episode actually aired a week later than the previous one did originally in Japan. Which means that I was supposed to watch it next week. Oops. Oh well, maybe I'll skip an episode next week to get the timing back on track I dunno. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving everybody who celebrates it and Kupupu!

Oh, and that poor snail getting salted by Suppaman! What an ass, I'm glad Arale gave him what he deserved!

@animefan8800 Here's my personal theory on why the second Gatchan took so long to be introduced...

Within the manga, Gatchan #2 appears between the Tsun's arrival (v10, ch. 01) and their attempt at departure after Senbei repairs the Gravity Manipulation Device (v12, ch 02). In the anime, the Tsun's arc of showing up and then attempting to leave (ep. 089-098) happens 36 episodes earlier than Gatchan #2's arrival. So, why the discrepancy?

Out of the anime episodes that are adapted from the manga between when the Tsun's try to leave (ep. 98) and Gatchan #2 appears (134), only one storyline from the manga really needs Gatchan #2 to be introduced because the plot hinges on it, and that's v14, ch 03, "Gadzooks! Two Gatchans!?" in which Dr. Mashirito builds Caramelman #7 a rubber jaw to trap Gatchan not realizing that there are now two of them, which spoils his plans.

The anime writing staff waited late to introduce Dr. Mashirito during eps. 071-074, pairing his intro from manga vol. 06 with his "Penguin Village Wars" arc from the end of vol. 08 (pairing arcs together like this strikes me as a good ratings strategy). I believe they did the same sort of thing here. Introducing Gatchan wasn't necessary until the Caramelman #7 arc, so the anime writing staff waited until after the intro of Obotchaman and paired the two arcs together.

Another thing to be considered, it must've been a logistics problem for the animation staff when they added another Gatchan. Every scene in which he flies, his wings are uniquely animated, and in some cases have to be animated separately from the other action going on onscreen. So now to have TWO Gatchans to animate was probably a headache, and a problem for continuity issues as well (if you pay attention to the episode after Gatchan #2's intro, ep. 136, you'll notice that only one Gatchan appears in that episode, probably because it was in development during or before Gatchan #2's introduction, but possibly not).

To sum up my theory: the anime writing staff wanted to postpone the introduction of Gatchan #2 for as long as possible (maybe because they knew the animation staff would have some difficulties, and maybe for a ratings ploy). Realizing they wouldn't need to have him appear until the Caramelman #7 arc, they decided to wait and introduce him immediately after Obotchaman's introduction to tie the two arcs together, as well as set up the next arc, the fight against Caramelman #7.

(Oh, and Happy Holidays to you and yours too!)

Well as usual @sebubibinman you went into great detail which was both interesting and informative. Part of me dreads reaching the Caramelman 007 arc because I haven't read beyond Volume 13 and will be experiencing it in the anime first, but I do find the idea of the two Gatchans being pivotal as you describe it a pretty clever plot device on Toriyama's part. So there's that to look forward to anyway.
