| Surprisingly Underrated One-Shot. 7/10. Although, not exactly unexpected from Takahide Totsuno. I haven't read all of his work since most are untranslated, but from Hajimete no Honeytrap, Houkago Strongberry and Damdam!! there's a clear improvement in his style of plot, art style and story direction off those one-shots. The chinese mythology to use in the horror lore is intriguing. I can't confirm how good or accurate it is, but the monster and method of fighting it along with the character's power is entertaining. The more I mature, the more I come to hate immature characters with obnoxious characteristics, but the main pairing's dynamic doesn't bother me. In fact, at least through this one-shot, I find it funny. Calling her companion "Dog" since she has the ability to detect location through smell, the Female Protagonist's rude way of speaking, ordering her campanion, Rin to explain the details to people, and work together as Specialists to kill these supernatural monsters. The art of horror in how the monster attacks humans as they hopelessly die effortlessly is great, along with the facial reactions. The "Dog/Bitch" companion, Rin is a funny character from her contrast of seeming beautiful and sophisticated on the surface but lustful when she's with her Leader Tsubomihi. While, Tsubomihi is a cold and rude yet arguably misunderstood character, who's on a revenge spree for witnessing her parents and younger brother be eaten by one of those monsters for twenty-three days. There's only these few subtle quick hints of insight to the potential story and characters, but with all of that and the suspenseful action, and how the threat and solutions develop, I think it is very good with a lot of potential. Hopefully it becomes serialized. Critically 7/10. Although, arguably 8/10 for how enjoyable it is as a One-Shot. |
