Ryo has finally entered Yokohama Minato High, and immediately finds the other middle-school badminton players all in the same class.

The 1st Years, I would say some have interest because of Koki Matsuda, the others are there to win the Inter-High with all the non-stop trainings that's expected of a well-rounded team like Yokohama Minato. Not everything has to be done with a racket, and I'm not surprised that some are dropping out sooner than expected while others contend with practice after practice, and that's on top of juggling studies as well.

Coach Jin fixing a match with Ryo and Yusa, and the cocky ace got on their nerves quick because it didn't serve as good practice. And Ryo just keeps on faltering on both his studies and practice, while the leftover Akira Uchida, just with Coach Jin's help, manages to change his stance, and is the only total newbie to retain his beginner spot.

Glad to see that the other beginners joined other clubs, and so that's said for the upcoming ranked matches to determine the match line-up for the competition coming forward.

Well, the prince didn't show any mercy for Ryo or the other newbies.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think Uchida would last. I was certain all the newbies would drop out and we’d just be left with the original 5. I’m glad Uchida stuck with it though. I really like that dude a lot. He’s actually giving it his all and putting in effort to be better. I admire his spirit and determination! I mean it can’t be easy being in the Honors track and taking on a demanding sport like badminton, especially now that he’s the only beginner. I think in time he’s gonna become a fine player.

Love how well the thoughtful/emotional sides of slice-of-life are mixed into the sport aspect. Especially how the family's not all off-screen, too. Makes for a much more authentic vibe that similar anime don't always have.

Ah, a new character that became the important factor for Ryou in order to improve for the character development, and his badminton play. Not just your casual high schooler that entering the sports club just for the sake of seeking a cute girls attention. But Uchida had more motivation intacted than your usual beginner, thanks to his determination, and little experience with pingpong. That's good, and its nothing to be surprise that his appearance can be acted as a healing matters for the first year gang in order to face the incoming big goals ahead.

However, before that, lets see the first ranking match first then...

ehh that was a preeetty good ep? i liked how they didnt just throw shit at the characters who quit. not everyone is aiming to be champions, neither are they fans of badminton. they wanted to try the club out and when they knew it wasn't for them, they quit. good thing they quit early too, a bunch of people at my school are in clubs when they rarely ever come to the activities held.

im also liking gladses guy a lot, shang hai dude is also surprisingly smart lol

Every character get their own screentime could be both strength and weakness. Who is the MC of this anime again? But I gotta love Shouhei Sakaki's fanservice (the first year big guy), he take off his shirt in almost every scene that feature him.

Nice episode. Liked how they portrayed the other people who left the club as simply not interested enough in badminton.

Also, Matsuda spittin' them badminton facts.

He's so self righteous. I can't wait for Ryo to beat him.

So much better than shitty Rymans Club. He's right about that 400 kmh shuttle speed. In a controlled environment, the fastest ever recorded smash was closer to 500 kmh.

I have to admit, this series is slowly becoming really comfortable to watch. We don't see a super talented MC but it instead a more unhurried display of his growth. The other characters are also really likeable so another plus.

And speaking of the MC, Mizushima, I kind of having a high expectation now for him since the episodes so far were sort of hinting that he has this "extraordinary" potential that he hasn't untapped yet. So I am looking forward to see that!

On another note, I am completely satisfied with how the show portrayed the "trying out things" with the first years in this episode. It downright give off that club-like feeling.

I can't really explain but this series, despite having a very generic setting, still somehow gives that strange unique feeling that makes it slightly different from the other sports animes that I've watched. But maybe it's still too early to say this so let's see if it can keep up the same feeling until the end.

The thing I loved specially in this episode is how the conversation between the MC and Uchida's friend went. In an episode so focused on the matter of resolve, this conversation shows how there is nothing inherently good or bad with not having enough motivation, and the doubts over each other's position are stated respectfully and always as a personal reflection and not in an imposing manner. I like that frustration and failure are brought up not as something you need simply to overcome, but also as something the prospects of can legitimately stress you and make you unhappy. Of course, it's also okay for Ryo to be resilient and chase his dreams, but it's not something everybody is motivated to do and that's perfectly fine.

It’s just your average grounded sports anime.

I can credit it for looking decent most of the time and meaning well, but everything that it does something else has done it better. It’s somewhat similar to Ao Ashi in that regard, but with that series there are some characters that I really like which isn’t so true with this anime.

I’ll watch the next episode and go from there.
