Yeah, the idea of presenting this as a "good ending" means the new cast are very "surface level" characters compared to their parents, since they can't have background conflicts similar to them. The extra time Oniokoshi has given to develop them so far really hasn't given any extra info at all, which makes it look like there's nothing else to them.

Still, Hoshi suffers from the overall premise problems, like the whole "let's call Keitaro, ask him his opinion about Polaris, tell him to take care, and mission accomplished" attitude Rika has. Gou/Sotsu did a very bad job with an active Rika, but Rei is even worse about it somehow. She makes Rika's "Trust your Friends", "give the doll to her" scenes there seem like big steps.

On top of it, it seems like Keiichi isn't even around town in spite of being one day from the festival. It makes no sense Rika wasn't trying to talk with him directly. The whole scenario also feels kind of odd, with her visiting town after years, getting wounded and none of the club dropping by. You'd think her return would be the big talk of those days, but it's more like she doesn't exist outside of interacting with Keitaro.

The manga was really confusing me at first since it was nearly identical to Oniokoshi, but now it's been a bit different. Things have been making more sense in Hoshiwatashi though, despite the cast being lackluster.

I guess the intent was to serialize them at the same time and have them reveal different information, but I can't remember anything Oniokoshi has said that hasn't been restated in a different way in Hoshiwatashi (aside from not introducing the photographer character)

Edit: Ok, this was something I noticed in chapter 6 but it showed up previously so I'll just add it on to here. The looper bracelet Rika's wearing has two broken beads in Hoshiwatashi, but only one in Oniokoshi. So obviously, Oniokoshi chronologically comes first. Does that mean that Oniokoshi is meant to be the question arc and Hoshiwatashi is the answer arc? It's kind of confusing since they're being serialized at the same time, while one takes place after the other.

They're both presumably question arcs, since both start with teasers of bad endings. Note that the original Higurashi manga also had question arcs running concurrently, which resulted in Watanagashi and Tatarigoroshi having extra introductory segments which weren't in the VN to introduce the club, since each one had to work standalone like in this case. The Answer arc presumably will be a third, still unrevealed, manga.
