| I've wanted to read this manga for years and am very disappointed with the result. I've never read the novel, so I don't know what the true full story of the source is, but I can't imagine this being the first manga adaption of the novel to be an unfaithful one. It definitely seems condensed, but I imagine it's nothing different from the characters and plots. I can't judge it from the original, but solely judging this manga, it's mediocre. As intriguing as the protagonist is for being different with mental hidden issues, with eventful plots, and decent characters, it's difficult to like from how unrealistic it all feels. Even if it's somewhat possible to some individuals to have a difficult life similar to his, I can't take a teenage boy seriously as someone who's fake and effortlessly attractive to woman, losing himself to drugs, getting several new partners without doing much, becoming a prostitute, all while struggling to pay bills, becoming depressed, and get cheated on, to then get sent to a crazy hospital and have grey hair at 27 when he's out after his father is dead... The moment of that girl's suicide was awfully abrupt also. It's all so poorly constructed, fast-paced with lackluster density and ultimately an unrealistic core. If it was all more believable and viable under different proper circumstances, it could have been very good or even great story. 4/10. |
