Episodes 27 & 28 - a pair that I had been dreading, given the subject matter.

Well, as expected, in-your-face whaling propaganda abounds. Worse yet, our main character Yamaoka commits a rather cruel act: he tricks his acquaintance Jeff into eating whale, knowing full well that it goes against Jeff's moral code.

Rightfully absent from official streaming. Let's try to retain the image of Yamaoka as a good guy.

The second movie becomes pretty political over food as well and it's way better than this episode.

Agreed. I knew going in that it was going to make me angry, and I was right.

I just had to laugh when Jeff visits Watt in the hotel to and it's basically a James Bond Villains lair including Piranhas, Cigar smoking and evil laughing.

The issue of whaling is much more complicated than "evil greedy foreigners vs good japanese traditions" but this story just oversimplifies it into that. What a shame!

I know that this is a drama anime but man these last two episodes have been too real with the current affairs of that time plastering their way into the episodes

It's a complicated topic you wouldn't really think or care much about until it was brought over to you and I can't really side with anyone in the whole debacle because there are points thrown here and there about the whole case, tho obviously being a part of Japanese media, the propaganda here is that Nihonjin good Gaijin bad

It's insanely obvious with the biases going on in this whole episode but as well with recent bringings of extremely toxic activist stuff going on in the West such as Just Stop Oil and the DEI bullshit ruining everything lately, I have very mixed feelings about these two episodes
I have been to Japan before with people who aren't from there, was a small trip to study there on a Scholarship but man the people I went with really irked me, there wasn't really much trying to understand another culture but was more things should be like in the West instead type crap so I can understand part of where the Japanese are coming from in these regards

Although it wasn't good that Oishinbo is trying to create a possibly pretend scenario where activist group really is bad with an evil scheme in the background which irl may or may not be the truth behind it so creating a hivemind for people to get the wrong facts despite possibly giving facts before for the whale population numbers, there are definitely some activist groups out there that jump on the chance of the trend to blow it up bigger than it is then take all the funds and run with it, Stop Cony is one that comes to mind because I lived through that which kids in my school were talking about and got heavily criticised upon, same can be said about scam Kickstarters too because despite them being just projects people make, they are technically a cause to make them happen as well

At the end of the day it's easy to be like oh but the poor whales and you just rant about it whilst doing nothing to actually help any cause so Imma be real honest and say I am a bystander, I don't really know a lot about this topic to give an opinion, I honestly don't care what is happening with this, and I don't plan to do any further investigation into this topic because I have better things to think about in life rather than stressing about whales

These two episodes leave a sour taste in the mouth not because it is trying to tackle on a hard debatable topic but it instead uses the characters and world-building of Oishinbo to create an agenda and force bias of what they think is right using creative means to push their thoughts down viewer's throats

@BonBonToro Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree that this episode leaves a sour taste due to it being an otherwise beloved series with great characters. I particularly dislike the awful depiction of the anti-whaling movement as having these comically evil characters running it all behind the scenes with capitalist intentions. It feels so disingenuous.
