Volume 2 finally came after a good 5 months due to a month delay by Yenpress, although we should get volume 3 in July hopefully!

Moving on to the volume, this volume seemed like more of a set up although that doesn't mean I disliked it. I enjoyed the interactions and the author fleshing out our main cast, the whole "sword rose" thing was cringe enough for the main cast to cringe but ultimately I thought it was a really nice moment that also foreshadows that they'll split up later on.

The side characters were OK but as mentioned before, the main focus was on our main cast and the author delivered.

The ending leaves off on a bit of a cliffhanger. I thought for a second that everyone that were abducted died and was shocked but as far as we know, they're all still alive.

Definitely not as good as Volume 1 but again, that's because it's a setup and I'm completely fine with that!

It is pretty entertaining to see Noll's mental processes more honestly. He is very cautious and chooses his words carefully in any given situation. He often takes the “technically not lying” approach and answers in a vague and unsensational way. His cover story is also absolutely iron-clad. He plays the long game and only acts when necessary, so nobody in their right mind would suspect him at this point. The guy looks like the epitome of virtue and altruism.

Oliver suggests that Darius may have been caught in an accident. Sure. Ironically, the "fake-sounding rumor" of a mage with a grudge against Kimberly is closer to the truth.

"Be sincere with your friends."
Except for being a shadowy murderer and a warlord, I imagine.

Godfrey believes that Oliver would be well suited to help him maintain peace. Right.

Oliver asked Nanao to keep the 7th spellblade "a secret between the two of them", but he broke the promise because he told his cousins about it anyway.

The six crossing swords now because they don't know whether they will be on the same side in the future? Pretty ominous foreshadowing, actually.

The others make a big deal about their new secret base, but of course Oliver is visiting an even more secret base.

It is ironic how Albright and Oliver talk about remembering his name when it is fake to begin with.

They poked criticism at society for being too heteronormative, actually using the word as well. (I wasn't expecting the word to be used outright.) The way they linked reversi to gender identity suggests that Pete is non-binary in some way (possibly genderfluid, but I can't say for sure). The positive portrayal of reversi and non-binary people also suggests that the narrative is in favor of rights for sexual and gender minorities. They used the words "sex" and "gender" and pronouns in a manner that also suggests as much.

JK Rowling is vocally anti-trans and rejects non-binary genders as well. Seven Spellblades is frequently compared to Harry Potter because of superficial similarities. The portrayal of reversi and non-binary individuals probably isn't an intentional repudiation of Rowling, but if you wanted to do so, this would be one way to do it.

I can't be entirely sure what the part about pregnancy was referring to, but I assume it means that Noll's mother was pregnant when he was young.

The concept of broom sports sounds interesting enough. Nanao is going to dominate with that broom.

The battles are great in this series. I especially enjoy Oliver's strength in his fundamentals compared to everyone else. I hope we one day learn more about what kind of training he went through to get to where he is now. I'm also curious who was the pregnant woman Oliver was helping.

Stacy and her battle was the weakest part of this volume for me. The battle felt too anticlimactic with the way it ended. Especially when compared to Oliver vs Albright which was taking place at the same time.

The cliffhanger did a decent job of making me want more.
