| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Quite honestly, Gin to Kin is the least gripping of the main line Fukumoto works I've read. Perhaps it is the largely episodic arc structure and the formula that it follows. It encourages me to predict the starting and end point before an arc begins and put down the series for easy breaks. The characters don't stay around that long either, even the ones that do outside of the leading men aren’t exactly fascinating. And whereas I have expressed interest in Morita and Gin, neither have resonated with me, I simply enjoy their ideas and presence like I do the arcs. All of this goes together to create an experience of always being entertained and enjoying the manga but forgetting about the events of it rather quickly because not much of it strikes me particularly hard. I'm sure part of this is due to reading Fukumoto’s other works too. I bring this up now because the one thing that has really piqued my interest more than anything else is the structure of this manga. Despite the fact that I say it can encourage me to not get too attached, it also has the opposite effect. It can go anywhere it wants, and it does go anywhere it wants. Stock wars, serial killers, poker and mahjong, art scams, politics. I have never read another story that felt like it captured such a wide array of different topics like this before. I find that very bold and charming. After having the year go by setting a pretty huge scale for this one chapter, and seeing Izawa rise and start throwing around language I have a hard time following suggests to me whatever is about to come will continue with this brilliant theme. I also wanted to mention the conversation Morita and Gin had at the start. It was nice to humanize Gin, show that he made the plan up on the spot and bet on his victory, while it was certainly not insured. Further, to call back to the water metaphor was quite brilliant, Morita’s suicidal dash broke down Kuramae’s door leaving him drowning, and that is why the rope Gin offered was accepted. |
