Episode Summary, Or At Least As I see It
This is "The Great Animal Strategy", or as Wikipedia translates it, "Animal: Great Tactics". Essentially, Momo is relaxing in the park and her bird companion, seeing all of the birds similar to her, is worrying about her beauty not standing out (or something). Then she lands on the grass with some weird cat-looking monster ready to eat her. Obviously, she falls back to Momo, who then investigates it with the rest of her animal friends, and it turns out the animal is actually tired and hungry. So they take it home with her, and Momo's mother (still the best character) gets some milk for the animal, and "Alexandra", or "Alexander", I don't know, starts to feel better. That's the cheetah (?)'s name. I didn't rewind much of this episode to get the finer details.

Then some other dude comes around looking for his animal, and Momo's mother cleverly misleads him, telling him "there's no animals here", but he's welcome to stay in the hotel. Then she goes out back for some reason, and the dude comes back in and starts ransacking the place for this animal that he somehow knows is here. Momo and the gang take off down the hallway, and make a last minute escape through the window with some ladder that just happens to be lying around.

But then...some "weird car" rounds the corner, pointing some weird gun, and shoots sticky stuff at them.. You can't make this shit up. So now they're stuck, and then three "Volunteers" take the animal off her, introduce themselves in some weird, obnoxious fashion that made it very hard to understand what they were saying, and they took off. Then some squirrels eat through the sticky stuff and Momo escapes. They go to the car (gourmepoppo, probably), fly around the city in broad daylight, and end up in some weird zoo place with a bunch of animals in captivity. But it looks surprisingly nice with a lot of freedom of movement and delicious food, and one of Momo's animal companions even calls it a "paradise for animals".

And out back... those same dudes are selling animals to people, and they're about to sell "Alexandra", which i'm pretty sure is its name, but of course, Alexandra has escaped! Momo overhears this, and they chase a car chasing an animal that is somehow outrunning a car on a straight. I've seen enough Initial D to know this is not realistic or logical. Eventually they end up in the same park, and Momo joins in and grabs Alexandra, and the guys are like, "Well, I guess we'll just tranquilize the girl too!", "Enjoy your afternoon nap!" And now for the aforementioned "Animal: Great Tactics".

Momo and her three animal friends dress themselves up in bush leaves and run away, and some of the idiots go chasing after the decoys while Momo escapes with Alexandra. But the main guy with the weird lips finds her...and then Alexandra jumps out of her arms, runs up a tree, and Momo runs behind a tree and turns into Tarzan. No, I am not joking. This is not an exaggeration. The bad guys literally call her "Tarzan" and drop their weapons for a moment, admiring her beauty.

So she grabs Alexandra and they swing across the forest, eventually ending up on a boat, which they sail to the other side of the island. Instead of shooting at them from the cliffside, which they can clearly do, the boss calls up some other guys and when they get to the other side, they show up out of nowhere and surround Momo. So she gives a mating call or something, and all of the animals somehow break out of their enclosure and scare off the bad guys. Some elephant waves his big trunk around. They all drop their weapons and run away.

And lastly, Momo's parents admire their daughter's work, and the episode ends on the animals making a big journey to the Savannah, where Alexandra is from, and s/he reunites with their parents.

Discussion
Now, you might not believe this, but I left out a bunch of details in this summary. This wasn't my favourite episode so far, but it definitely had the most plot. And a bucket of laughs and weird things along the way. That comes with the territory of '90s magical girl anime for kids directed by Takeshi Shudo, I guess.

I do like how Momo's real parents are constantly involved in the story and aren't just forgotten about. They're always watching over their daughter as she expands her horizons.

You know, maybe Minky Momo really is just a story about growing up and becoming, as the series likes to say a lot, an adult. As much as there's a bunch of weird magic and weird characters in this story, this is a pretty grounded story.

I think Minky Momo is very clear about its themes from the title: it's about becoming an adult, but holding onto your dreams. And as much as this is an anime for kids and little girls, I think that's something anybody can appreciate. Moreso, in fact, if you are an adult.

I really didn't think I'd end up liking this anime that much, but I think I'm earning back the money I spent on this series pretty quickly. You know, metaphorically. It's gonna take a while to get all of that money back for real...
