THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This is part of the 2 hour special they aired this week.

Looks like we got another character working for the Towa Organization named Shinpei Kuroda/Scarecrow. Also introduced is the mysterious concept of MPLS. I find the episode even more complex when Pigeon gives him the order to find a mysterious business guy.

Turns out, this is the first part of the Boogiepop at Dawn arc.

oh, so this is some sort of prequel. Scarecrow is an interesting character, or rather was.. his presence felt too short, not gonna lie. despite working for Towa Organization and observing the people that evolve from the drug, he saves Kirima Nagi and goes against the Organization

that last dialogue felt really eerie, near the cemetery with Boogiepop referring to himself as Shinigami

really like it so far

No, they evolved naturally. The drug was an special case. But there are a bunch of people evolving naturally. Nagi was one of them but her evolution was killing her, so Scarecrow gave her a drug to stop her evolution. That saved her life.

stopped her evolution? that's kinda weird, because they show Makiko Kisugi, the doctor, injecting the drug in the rats and herself and that boosts the regeneration and physical capabilities. not sure how the drug nullifies the evolution effect from the naturally evolved body

is that how the LN has it?

The drug would stop the evolution of an MPLS (like Nagi) but it would do the opposite in a normal human.

Basically, the drug had two functions. Stop the evolution of MPLS (natural evolved humans like Suiko, Nagi, Jin) and boost and accelerate the evolution of normal humans.

That's because Makiko was a normal human. The drug would stop the evolution of an MPLS (like Nagi) but it would do the opposite in a normal human (like Makiko).

Basically, the drub had two functions. Stop the evolution of MPLS (natural evolved humans like Suiko, Nagi, Jin and Boogiepop) and boost and accelerate the evolution of normal humans.

still kind of confused what's the purpose of this double-edge effect to the drug. isn't the point of Towa Organization to observe and find new ways of human evolution to rule over? why would they stop a naturally evolving human instead of analyzing it? it has some risks?

If more naturally evolved humans were born, they might actually rebel against normal humans and try to control the world. One of the main goals of the Towa organization is to prevent this. That's why they kill MPLS or stop their evolution.

i see, while killing seems like the easiest way to prevent it. i see no obstacles for them just to brainwash the naturally evolved ones, like Spooky E did. but i figure that just adds more work for them and more unpredictability to their evolution

Towa uses synthetic humans as minions. Spooky E, Scarecrow and Sasaki were all synthetic humans. They're easier to control than MPLS (natural evolved humans).

What a MASSIVE animation improvement. I'm gonna say it here that this show has the best soundtrack of the season.

Definitely my favorite episode after the first arc.

There's like one post that mentioned Makiko. I can put tags there. But that's about it. The rest was stated in this episode.

So Nagi and Boogiepop is connected through Scarecrow, and it looks like Boogiepop is actually fulfilling Scarecrows' wishes, to be an ally of justice

Echoes encountered Boogiepop somewhere unkown. Kuroda (synthetic human, real name Scarecrow) is a detective who works for Towa Organization, a girl named Pigeon gave him the order to investigate someone named Kyouichirou Teratsuki. Kuroda revealed that Towa Organization is the one responsible for the creation of synthetic humans around the world. Kuroda visited a hospital in his investigation and met a young Kirima with a strange disease. Kuroda later discovered that Kirima is the daughter of a famous writer that passed away, he visited her in the hispital, meeting a young Kamikishiro, Kuroda realized Kirima is not a normal person (probably a synthetic one). Another member of Towa Organization named Sasaki received the order to murder Kuroda. Kuroda stole a drug to stop Kirima's evolution, recognized as betrayal, Sasaki went for him to the hospital and Kuroda could barely escape, only to die in the forest spending his last times with a young Miyashita (in her Boogiepop mood). Sasaki found Kuroda's dead body.

Interesting character Kuroda who he got introduced here. As I can see, we are watching how it all started, well, why Kirima has the attitude that she has and probably skills beyond a normal person. How Kamikishiro was her friend since they were younger and a bit of what Towa Organization is and how it works. With only one episode, they built and killed and interesting character like Kuroda, with his own thoughts, reasons and emotions, just to risk everything for Kirima, what a guy. Also, the action scene was great, giving that sense of speed, and dying there, in front of Boogiepop, I think, she took her name from him.

We know more about Nagi. Nice. Is this the birth of Boogiepop?

RIP Scarecrow.

Also, the first scene between Boogiepop and Echoes is confusing. Where are they?

Art so much better this episode, especially nice Scarecrow design, young Nagi, Pigeon & random doc (Kisugi?). Fight really short as usual but good.
Would've been nice to get more Scarecrow, his backstory, basically origin story, with Nagi & Boogiepop were quite interesting.
Echoes seems to be alive & in another planet?

This episode always hits me hard, and I credit it for being the episode that really cemented my love for Boogiepop.

What Scarecrow, and later Mo Murder both did represents the most beautiful thing in the world to me, and in us humans. To do such a stupid, risky and self-damaging, but good thing for another; in a situation where they'll likely never even learn about or appreciate it—or we won't likely live through to see it blossom in any way. Those times where we manage to do the unexplainable, with it offering only sacrifice and damage to our own selves, yet choose to anyway—to just do good. To follow our common or personal little values and principles.

It reflects us rising above our urges, our instincts and base desires. Us as animals. To act in such a way against our very selves and our innate desire for self-preservation... No other being in the world can manage this, it is our gift alone—and we with all our intelligence and sentience so rarely manage to do it. But rarely, every so often, we do achieve it.

When we listen to that little bug inside, no matter how small and crushed down it might have gotten over the years, that just wants to do and be something good for someone else like us. The chance doesn’t come around often, if at all for most of our lives, but when it does, and we manage it, it can only be when our hearts are at their most beautiful point. When we 'break through' and become something more. When our sentience and humanity is realised, and we become something more than just our animal parts and our history. When we do something just for the principle.

There are many cases one can learn about, throughout all of the great conflicts, depressions and tragedies of history, where every day people manage to break through our nature and achieve this, and surely countless more forever untold; locked away in the every day noise, or in the long and unseen history of the world. People sheltering the persecuted and knowingly facing death and torture for it, people running into fires, and firefighters running up burning skyscrapers... Teachers shielding their students with their own bodies, and soldiers jumping over grenades just to save their comrades and friends. Starving brothers giving the last morsel to their starving sisters, and people going down with ship or reactor, just to save and protect as many as they can in the role only they can do.

If there is a God, or an audience of our experience out there—I am sure this is when they are the most proud, shocked or affected. Like you or me, who watched Scarecrow in this story. Where our souls and characters are truly seen, shining. A soul developed bit by bit over a lifetime, achieving definition in one tiny, beautiful moment. The decision to do away with self-preservation, the fundamental law for all life, and to hurt and lose ourselves for another like us. These events are not fiction, flukes, or one-off anomalies. And such transcendent beauty is an irrefutable possibility within each of us.

Even in the worst and most hopeless among us... Such were the characters of Scarecrow and Mo Murder in Boogiepop. In even the worst and most sinful a life, it is a defining moment.

If I could control time, and observe with my own eyes our history, these events would be where I go and where I cry. How many would it take, I wonder, being confronted with and seeing first-hand those undeniable moments of purity—to believe and love in all of life and humanity again.

I think, just one...
