Finally another mystery to solve! I was stumped on the first one, so maybe I'll have more luck with the second one. One very important clue:

- The culprit confirmed that the photos of the first crime scene actually showed something important that could in the end reveal a trick, or even the identity of the culprit itself.

This could not have been the strange way of decapitation, as that can still be determined by looking at the corpse. My first thought was that it could have been the painting, but that should still be there and can be examined. UNLESS the culprit went back in the mean time to destroy it or erase an important hint. We should assume that the clues have been removed, or else destroying the pictures wouldn't really do anything. Maybe the position of the bodies was important?

As for the second murder... I dunno. The novel really doesn't want us to think it was that maid, even though she's the prime candidate. It also doesn't want us to think that murder could have been possible through the window. If anything I think the open window is a red herring, to make the maid seem less suspicious because there 'could' have been another way of killing. Thinking about it...

One thing I forgot to mention: The incident from a few years ago. It's safe to assume that it was another murder, or series of murders. Which would be highly incriminating against the lady of the house and the maids. No matter how I look at it, they seem so damn suspicious.

I am getting close to the end, so I'll wager my first guess: It was the lady of the house, with the help of one or more of the maids. Or actually, I will make a better guess: It was one of the maids, at the (implied) request of the lady of the house. To create an interesting situation for her. I am ready to embarrass myself with another theory that completely misses the mark. :P

As slow as it may seem it does get quite action packed later on.
