Sweet, we got more info on Alicization.

An important episode sure in terms of the plot. There's Kikuoka talking about his plans and trying to get Kirito involved. Meanwhile in the game world, we got the others discussing the recent issue of Kirito's condition.

I think overall, this episode really gave an impression of the importance of Kikuoka's motivations.

Copying of the soul...

So the people in the new world is... not exactly NPC? Making of the forbidden rules and too perfect... so making a personality to break the rules. And Alice girl getting captured was one part of the plan.

Main guy doesn't know everything, so they were able to get him to cooperate.

Project Alicization...

She was finally able to "see" main guy. Familiar face for a nurse.

The lady was attempt to kill her boyfriend, but couldn't.

Seems like back to story in the game world next.

For the sheer amount of info that those LN chapters contain they actually did a decent job condensing it to the most important aspects.

They got all the points across they needed to get across.
The collapse of Higa's clone was made even creepier
They seem to reference back to the guys in ALO a lot more which is appreciated
Rinko continues to get plenty of shine.

Next week we're back in Underworld.

Yeah they're definitely real human beings and not NPCs which makes their experiments very cruel... I wonder how they would react if they find out Alice accidentally broke the rule not out of free will?

hmm CR Still did not release SAO's EP 6, 1.5 hours is left so i didn't watch it yet.

but Alice did tried to do something against the rule, even tho she did not realize it herself.
she tried to pass the border to save the life of the dark knight, as Kikouka also mentioned this in this part in the novel.
very minor spoiler :

Edit : btw LOL at that hater who already give this a 1/5 Rating in this poll xD i just checked the result, didn't vote myself yet since i didn't watch it yet.

I agree but she stopped when she realized what she was going to do and Kirito&Eugeo told her to stop. Kikuoka searches for someone who breaks the rules even if the others are against them.

A change Kawahara most likely approved since he's involved. He has been quite vocal on how he wanted to use the anime to change some things.

Personally I actually prefer this as it not only keep the other characters on screen for longer and not as pushed aside as in the novels and it will help a certain development waaaaay later down into the arc.

Interesting episode that did well in showing what STL is and what underworld really is. Their goal though was quite surprising. The copies fate was quite unnerving. But to think that underworld was essentially a civ simulation though. Asuna's words as she made her and Kirito's views known was pretty sharp that reflected well on their experience with Ai's. Its nice that we got to see the girls views on the project as well. The insight into Kayaba's past before SAO and his relationship with Rinko was interesting. Asuna's words as she comforted Rinko sure was heartfelt. Overall a great episode that did well in explaining project alicization and the goals of Rath in a easy to understand manner and in the process establishing a strong foundation for the season. Im also liking the fact that the support cast are getting much more of role in the series compared to the novels.

I gotta say, SAO has really surprised me with this new season. Pretty much all the episodes so far have been great, and I'm starting to feel more and more invested in the plot.

The only complaint I (would) have had so far was that the pacing is a little fast (we get to know everything about the Alicization project already in episode 6, whilst I was kinda hoping they would keep us in the dark much longer) but seeing as this anime is going to get 50+ episodes, that must mean there is some really crazy stuff happening later. Haven't read the novels (yet) so I am very excited to see where this is going to go.

Now the wait for episode 7 begins... damn, a week feels like an eternity right now.

i really like the explanation about copying the mind/soul here, and ye it makes sense for the perfect copy to start panicking when they know they are just a copy so gonna make those AI start from childhood or the very beginning which is birth

Lol should Asuna really share a top secret government project about raising artificial murder machines to a bunch of high school girls? Apart from that it was an okay episode as expected of an info dump episode. Higa's copy breaking down was way creepier than in the novel. Next week we're back in the Underworld! Judging from the title it looks like they're gonna cover a lot.

I don't get it.. If the goal is making killing machines what's the point of making AIs with souls and emotions in the first place? won't emotions get in the way of killing people efficiently? Why not just make robots that are programed to kill people by design?
Also how is this guy planning to use these AIs in war if they don't have no physical bodies? Copy them to some robots I assume but so far his moral justification for raising them is that they don't have physical bodies. wth.

funny you mention emotions since that is the missing link i think on why the AIs on UnderWorld is like never broken the Taboo Index, you know how robots are supposed to be strict followers of rules/laws

I really don't like it being a weapon research. It's like author tries to make Alicization project controversial instead of something simple - for example research on creating AI civilization.
I guess it will come back as drama somewhere near the end, and I'm not happy with that prospect tbh.

Other than that, nice episode. A bit slow, but everything seemed important. Yay for not rushing things (probably?).

Because a machine (or top-bottom AI) can't react to things it doesn't know. It can only do what it's programmed to do. So in a war where a lot of things can go wrong/unexpected, a machine won't be able to learn by itself and make the appropriate action.

Firstly when was this explained? Secondly even if it was, if you wanna win a war you need to kill people there's not much else to learn and going out of your way to make AIs just for that goes against his intent and it's even proven in this very episode since the AIs don't murder.. which is a speed bump for him.. which raises another question, if nobody murders in this world how did the taboo index spring up?

Good episode, I guess this was the info dump episode.

First of all, I'm quite surprised that Kikuoka is so open with sharing what's supposed to be confidential information to the point Asuna even tells the rest of the girls but I guess we can overlook it cause anime. xD

Anyway, never thought I'd see the day come when they'd talk about Machine Learning strategies in SAO. I find it interesting as a theory and it might actually be viable if we could somehow translate the human brain in infancy into a usable primitive neural network, you'd be able to feed data sets a.k.a raise it and watch it grow which is technically what they seem to have done initially. The Taboo Index basically seems to serve as the negated output. Any path through the network that reaches a rule in the Taboo Index could be considered wrong and could probably be sent back into the network and used as feedback to change the path a.k.a Back Propagation in Computer Science terms. If Alice is technically considered one such Neural network then the fact that she was able to override the Taboo Index rule with something that she herself considered greater priority basically destroying the absoluteness of the Taboo Index rule is technically akin to learning which would actually be mind blowing if it happened in reality, it'd be super interesting to see how that particular path in the network was formed. xD

I don't think I see what Kikuoka is trying to do. Sure you can develop AI Kikuoka, if you want to train it to be able to kill go ahead but this AI or neural network is playing around in the simulation under the assumption that it has the motor inputs of a real human being assuming the virtual simulation is 1:1. To actually make this AI have any use on the field you would have to invent Androids that basically had the motor capabilities of a human and handled the exact same way. I guess they could technically do some sort of abstraction but that would still not function the way they want it too, unless they have the actual hardware developed and stashed away somewhere I don't see how Project Alicization will benefit the millitary.

Anyway I think I've digressed too much, computer science talk aside. Good episode guys, good episode.

Enjoyed the conversation between kikouka, asuna, higa, and Rinko. It was nice to know about laid the foundation to alicization (which is the plot basically), tackling the issue of AI creation in relation to the purpose of the project as well as the motivations of kikouka and his team. Pretty solid and important episode.

It’s not really cause anime imho. If you look at it to from another perspective, Rinko stated something in this episode and it is that Kikouka was already at the risk of losing confidentiality from the beginning when he decided to hire kirito (someone from outside the organization as a part timer) because he wanted someone who is impeccable at dealing and interacting with VRWorld and has vast years of experience, so what better choice than kirito. He risked confidentiality the moment he decided to hire an outsider, but it’s necessary and important for the project, so there’s no point in hiding to asuna anymore especially when asuna made it that far and he already predicted that she knew what STL is and its capabilities.

True, they were already at risk when they decided to hire Kirito but generally if you're gonna be hiring someone to work on something confidential you'd generally have them sign NDA's and stuff. xD
The fact that Kirito freely disclosed top secret information to Asuna and Sinon and then with Kikuoka himself basically detailing out his plan makes it hard to suspend disbelief on the fact that this is supposed to be a top secret research project. I get your point about him choosing to disclose the information to Asuna since he figured that Asuna probably had an idea about what was going on already but the fact that she was able to share info top secret info over a public server seems a little too lenient.

Around the 4 minute mark when Kikuoka said that top-down AIs can't react to things they don't know like when something unexpected happens. As for the Taboo Index, it will be explained in detail at a further time (episode 13-14 maybe?).

Well you do have a point there also about sharing with the rest of the girls. Well it’s not like all people don’t divulge information on work irl and simply signing a contract to not reveal anything isn’t going to eliminate all chances of someone talking (at least to people he trusts) unless you confine him too on top of that or monitor them 24/7.

@Mattinator95 well I don’t have a reddit account. Sorry to disappoint you, but you mistook me for someone else.

You'd think that since they're doing around 50 Episodes for this series that they'd release 2 episodes on different days of the week, rather than prolong it too much. I mean, for the love of anime a year really is long.

Woof, a full 24 minutes of nothing but panning shots and exposition. I almost miss Kirito.

That was a pretty good episode. So, the whole project is mainly done for SDF's virtual training against A.I. machines which are more adaptable in many different situations and give an output which is more resembling to humane reactions that can lead to killing which is the point since murders in Underworld are still not happening. What about the goblins though? Anyway so from what I got, this Alicization project is heavily based on artificial neural networks. Kirito being used in this project as a real human being can potentially influence the input paths and give a desired output, a result which is not a loose function that would lead to a back propagation and can override the Taboo Index's rules instead something that Alice managed to do since Kirito was around when she broke the rules. Anyway, we go back to Underworld again yay.

"1,000 AI NPC "Lives" on computer are worthless."
>Asuna : "I'm angry as hell"

*a couple thousands people died during SAO*
>Asuna : "At least I've spent some quality time with Kirito."
