THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

The central joke about character design was funny if maybe beaten into the ground a bit but the art is kind of bad in this one. I guess they were scrapping the bottom of the barrel with this property by the time they made this in 1991.

I think there might be some evidence of changes in fashion in the five years since the end of the TV series.

Oh boy this episode was weird, especially on the animation/art style, it almost didn't look like the original anymore. The actual concept of the eye disease was pretty fun, but rather weird as well...

Well let's see what the last episode has to offer of this ova series!

Was not a fan of this animation style(really enjoyed the animation with Inaba episode where Ataru had broader shoulders and some muscles :3), but other than that, those boys were so kawaii/creepy with them eyes LOL! Poor Lum got so traumatized ! But at least Ataru redeemed himself by taking care of her...and acknowledging his actions were irresponsible.

Looks like I wasn’t the only person who found the animation weird.
The ending was a bit unexpected. Wish there was more of that.

The designs this episode really seemed different from the usual. That joke about the moe eyes was definitely on point, probably even more so when it came out in 1991.

The one thing I'm most perplexed about is why this episode seemingly didn't receive a proper film remaster. All 195 episodes of the TV Series as well as all Movies and the other 10 OVA episodes all received a remaster, the sole exception being this episode. Did they somehow lose the film masters for only this episode? Seems awfully weird... If anyone knows something about this, please do tell.

The original manga chapter by Rumiko was meant to be a parody of the ''big girly eyes" which started reigning supreme and spreaded like a virus on the manga/anime artworks at the time.

I agree that this OAV art was not good... though I think Lum chara-design shows the... ehm, biggest twin peaks ever, here.

The first episode of the 90s for the series (of which there’s only two and the 6th movie) and I gotta say, wasn’t the biggest fan of the art style in this one, animation was good but the style is probably one of my least favorite ways the show has looked up to this point. But I was able to get past that pretty quickly, the episode itself was pretty hilarious with the plot centered around a disease that gives you huge glossy anime girl eyes lol, there were both funny and creepy shots thanks to them, Ataru made some especially funny faces in this one.

And after reading some other posts in this thread, it’s interesting how this episode was topical at the time because of the increase in art styles that had those huge anime eyes, not to say it’s a bad style but it definitely doesn’t fit the characters of Urusei Yatsura lol, but that’s a cool bit of history there that makes me appreciate this episode more. And I just have one OVA episode left of the main OVAs at least, I know there’s one stand alone OVA left after the 6th movie too so I’m not quite done yet but I’m getting very close.
