THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Though not quite as bad as Apocalypse Zero, MD Geist was still horrible. Y'know, it wasn't even laughably bad. It was generic and half the things that happened made no sense. It sort of felt like mad max, but then it went into some sort of retarded mecha nonsense.

3/10, It was crap imo. At least the plot twist at the end makes the sequel sound somewhat interest.

Incidentally, this is my 200th anime watched. Go figure..

anime has really lost a lot of its spirit over the years after 1995 you rarely if ever see a show that is even half this gritty and hardcore i suppose the 80 to mid nineties were an experimental stage for anime before it became all the same old commercialized shit of course this is back when they still used hand drawn illustrations so that gave it a certain character you won't see now a days no matter what

Yep, because pointless violence and zero character development is so much better than a random harem anime with pointless panty shots and zero character development. I mean is this really the anime you want to use as an example of what's missing now a days? Really?

Can't believe what I just read. There are hilariously bad OVA, like Kakugo no Susume and Genocyber, but MD Geist was just bad. It had nice mecha designs, but the whole OVA was just boring. They never bothered to explain anything and just kept on fighting. It was just bad. Way far from so-bad-it's-good.

I found this nowhere near as bad as its reputed to be, instead it's merely dull, plus there's actually a single interesting idea in here, although it's executed poorly.

Hyper-capable fighters like Geist aren't uncommon in anime, but there's usually at least a bare minimum of moral superiority to them; even if they're assholes, they're ultimately fighting for something worthwhile. This one almost appears to be conforming to that; Geist seems to be fighting to fix the mess the army that betrayed him created. He kills only bandits and people who are trying to kill him, like Krutes.

The difference comes in the ending. Conventionally, Geist would have stopped the Death Force program and probably paired up with Vaiya as lovers. He would have "won" and received the reward of life and glory. Instead, Geist ensures that the Death Force is activated so that he will have strong opponents to fight, revealing himself as the true villain of the piece and sending poor Vaiya into a wail of terror.

This show manages to be slightly interesting by taking that common archetype of the lone super-fighter to the logical extreme; all he cares about is fighting and will gladly take the chance to continue doing so even if it means the deaths of everyone else. MD Geist seems to be trying to be a satire of shallow action pictures.

Sadly, it doesn't quite work. Geist is too cold for a happier ending to really seem plausible. His cruel treatment of Vaiya is over the top and is too revealing too early of Geist's vicious character. Vaiya herself could use more fleshing out. She's almost the tender, bruised heart of the OVA; initially apparently as vile as everyone else she ultimately seems like a frightened person driven into her scheming by the harsh world the idiocy of the military has created. Unfortunately, the scene where she yells at Krutes is pat and not very effective. The best shot at this idea is her sad expression as the biker gang tell her that they're leaving her.

After watching it, I'm glad I didn't have any expectations about it. After seeing all the violence and gore, I think it wasn't bad and IMHO it wasn't that good either, just OK. I'm leaning with Fronzel's points of view for this episode 2 posts ahead of this reply.

Since I've started this I might as well finish the series and download MD Geist II: Death Force somewhere in the web now.

Everyone hates how fucking dope this MC is?
This guy fucks shit up like crazy.

This reminded me if a Bruce Lee movie with the soundtrack and the way the whole OVA was directed. Also gave me nostalgic Thundercat feels.

9/10 because Geist. Disliked how he rejected tits.

Not nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be...are you guys weak for gore or something? I expected action and brutal violence and I got that so didn't care if it got plot or not really.

Had its moments and excellent cover but..... yeah. The plot was really going nowhere + the animation was f*cking bad. I only got a couple of quick laughters from the ridiculous gore, but that's about it.

2/10.

I came to this thread looking for astute observations regarding the resemblance of the word "FINAL" to "ANAL." Someone on 4chan put this together: https://i.imgur.com/zT4CsME.jpg

I've only seen a little bit of Dragon Ball Z, but I've heard people talk about Goku like Geist - saying that he was intended to be an unlikeable jerk who just wants to fight, even at the cost of innocent lives.

I liked it. For a 40 minute OVA it's really not that bad.

It does have it's fair share of silly moments though. Like the part where Geist jumps on a mecha, stabs the pilot in the head with a knife, jumps off and the mecha explodes for whatever reason. But I think moments like these are a part of why I enjoyed this show.

Like a good majority of the people who have seen this, I imagine they watched it because of this meme from 4chan

Somehow reading through that meme is actually more enjoyable then watching this OVA.

Now, I wasn't expecting anything but a schlocky mess from this, but man I was hoping for more entertainment at the very least. For the most part is was just dull and insubstantial even in a "so bad, it's good" kind of way.

This show had a pretty sparse story but it I enjoyed it through and through because boy howdy those Mad Max style mecha battles were well animated. Really not something to bring to film critique class but more something to cut on a Saturday evening with the boys.

So bad it's good.

I actually watched when I was 7 or 8yo and most I remembered were actually from the sequel (like the insect-like machine eating people) and it gave me nightmares because of the "bad ending" (now, referring to this one), but watching again now this is hilarious, a huge mix of clichés and overbadassness, but the story is interesting and the ending great... second movie not so great though....

Wow this Ova had it all. I love how brutal the deaths were. The protagonist was a villain and he actually succeeded, Now that's a good change of pace from usual stories lol.
Ngl enjoyed it.

This anime is like... immensely stupid and nihilistic. There is also something strangely appealing in it, a real midnight movie about a villainous super soldier on a bloody rampage through the world created years previous by Tetsuo Hara and Buronson.
