Is the story worth reading?

Yes, I know it's subjective question.

I see that the novel is top11 and manhua is high there too, but is the story itself really that good or inflated due to being its niche?

I don't enjoy BL but I enjoy historical deep lore fantasy stories, so would that be good read for me? Or a lot of fan-service and romance?

In terms of its genre (danmei), I would say TGCF has one of the LEAST romance out of all danmei novels I have read. Also, do be prepared because there are seven books to get through. I would highly recommend reading the books if you actually want to get inside the minds of the characters, because it feels like the manhua and anime only show us what’s happening from the 3rd person POV. But the books show everything from Xie Lian’s perspective and narrative, so a lot of confusing aspects are also cleared up.

Aside from that, the novel does a really good job of bringing the characters’ emotions to life. Do be warned about Book 4, there’s a LOT of angst.

I'm not someone that gravitates toward BL as a genre, but TGCF was one of the most impactful stories I've ever read in my life. I think I binged it all in about 30 hours over two days around my 8 hour work shift. It's a story of the dedication to a love in its purest form, but it also explores other characters and their backgrounds and flaws as Xie Lian is sent to investigate problems in the mortal realm. The plot unfolds in a satisfying way that kept me guessing as to what's coming next.

The anime has covered the story up to the first flashback, so if you wanted to look up the novel that correlates to, you could start there. Originally it was book 2 in the Chinese translation, but I don't know how the English version has adapted it. I'll also say that the next section can be a little bit slower, but it does pick up as you keep going.
