I want to ask a question why when I say I love the English dub

to me personally, most dubs just sounds off. The acting is bad, the emotions don't quite hit as hard.. The actors have no clue about the culture they're talking about, they can't pronounce names and places for shit, its just so cringe. Unfortunately, with dubbed a lot of things get cut out and lost in translation because its harder to say in English a lot of the things that are said in Japanese and whilst keeping it all synced scene by scene at the same time. It's much easier to accurately sub a translation than to dub it.

You don't lose any of the neich nuances of a show and the culture because you don't need to cut anything down for it to make sense. You just translate it by text which humans are quicker at reading than speaking.

I don't mind some dubs personally, but you miss out on the true essence of the show and how it was meant to be watched. So much gets cut out. You miss experiencing the true origin of how a show was meant to be viewed when you watch a western adaptation.

Watch what you want, I'm not here to judge but that's my view on it and why I will never watch a dub over sub. I would never watch the Simpsons for example in Japanese even though I'm N3 encroaching N2. There's just something that feels wrong about watching a show in another language than it was made for. You're going to have mistakes and mistranslations, cultural misunderstandings with things being cut out and rushed.. it ends up being a different show from what it was intended to be.

It's just an irrational hatred stemming from a superiority complex. People can list all these reasons why they prefer sub, but none of that explains why they act this way towards those who disagree. Preferring something one way or another does not explain why they hate those who choose the other option.

I really do agree with this. It’s my personal reason as to why I generally enjoy subbed more than dubbed. It just feels more dull, not as vibrant in a way compared to the dubbed versions. Not to say dubs are always bad. Some English VAs are phenomenal, but it’s a different culture and thus it feels they sometimes miss the mark. I much prefer English voice acting for more western style media, and Japanese voice acting for eastern (barring the few cases I’ve watched a Chinese anime with Chinese voice acting) media. It just ‘fits’ better in my head I guess.

I generally love to watch for this anime and all the others because it is a language that i'm used and a lot of lines are delivered more cleverly/funny in the dub, rather than the sometimes vanilla script of the subtitles

When i’ve watched dubbed every single time i feel like the voice doesnt fit the character, regardless of stuff like the character’s personality age gender or the voice itself, it’s most definitely just in my head. With that being said i never felt the need to go around and tell other watchers smth like “sub is the only correct way to watch anime and you’re a fucking idiot” lol.

I watched Frieren in japanese but I did watch some dub clips on Twitter (both from Latam Spanish dub and English dub).

All three versions sound good. Maybe it is because I already had my "That is not how I thought the characters would sound" moment when Atsumi Tanezaki got casted for the role instead on Konomi Kohara who was what I expected. The English dub for Frieren herself is deeper/more mature but I think that goes for the other two as well when compared to alternative more high pitched options. The rest of what I heard of the cast fits fine enough.

Frierens VA especially has a unique voice that fits the character perfectly. Reading the manga now and using that voice for her lines in my head sounds so natural

Frieren is definitely one of the better English dubs, up there with FMA:B and Gurren Lagann. I find myself watching more and more dubs these days cause the effort is there and the translations are pretty faithful to the originals (in Frieren’s case, I find even better than the original). But there’s definitely going to be people out there that’ll get on your case for watching dubs.
Honestly, watch whatever you want, sub/dub or both (I do both, currently watching Sakamoto Days dubbed, but Apothecary Diaries in sub), doesn’t matter; you do you. The point is to enjoy what you’re watching and connect with others about it.

theres a lot of hate on both sides of the sub vs dub debate, no matter the choises they make or professionalism. i personally dont like listening to dubs, especially english, but it really doesnt concern me if someone does lol. plus, unless youre only listening to the original japanese, with no subtitles, its still being translated by someone. nothing one language/culture to another can be seamlessly translated in a way that makes everyone happy.
