Ryouka Miketa (三家田 涼佳) is often referred to as "Mittens" in the English Dub. The subtitles script uses the same script as the English Dub, so the subtitles will call her "Mittens" as well.

Ryouka Miketa also has a Japanese nickname of "Mike, Miketarou" on MAL's character page. She's sometimes referred to as "Mike" even though her full name is "Miketa."

Ryouka Miketa is very fond of cats, so she gets her mom to style her hair to make it look like a cat. I suppose that's the main reason she's referred to as "Mittens..." but is there anything else like something related to the Kanji?

Because she resembles a catgirl and Mittens is a common cat name.

There is the 三毛猫 Mikeneko (3 colored fur cat)
Maybe the size fits for dub too. No idea if she wears mittens or simple gloves.

It's called localization. Same with how they translate Miketarou into Mickey Mouse.

Her motif and namesake comes from the 三毛猫 (Mike neko) i.e. calico cat. And her nicknames ミケ (Mike) and ミケ太郎 (Miketarou) are basically just names you'd give to a pet, so it gets localized to Mittens. Iirc in the manga around ch3 they translated Mario calling her ミケ太郎 (Miketarou) to Mickey Mouse, so there's also that.

It's a localization. Since in Japanese Mike is a cat-related nickname, they changed it to Mittens, which is an equivalent in English. Most of the English-speaking audience wouldn't know the association between the name Mike and cats, but they would understand Mittens is a cat name.

Apparently there is a confession in the Medalist manga. Can't imagine the amount fansub drama war over its proper translation when anime reaches there. Anyhow, has there ever been a figure-skating performance tuned to Weezer's Buddy Holly song?

Some people have touched on it already, but since her name is Miketa Ryouka, her trainer plays around with it and chunks it up as Mike(tarou). Mike is a generic cat name in Japan, and -tarou is a generic somewhat archaic way to end boys' names, and is often used on pets as well (think Hamtarou or Chuntarou from KnY). The Y in Ryou just gets left out cuz it sounds similar enough for a nickname.

Since her design (both visually and personality-wise) resembles a kitten, it makes sense that her trainer makes fun of her that way, and by adding on a boys' name ending, it underlines her tomboyish nature as well.

So it's mainly just to show how her trainer sees her with a play on words mixed in there, which is very common across all types of Japanese media.

@myrmidon_mamori Uhh no, no its not.

Just look further up and youd see its official.

Plus OP, you literally showed off why she has this name in your picture.
