I want to start the manga so bad but I've been spoiled on it and I know how bad the depression stuff is it makes it worse because phos is one of my favorite characters in all of anime

Just read like 5 chapters a day or something. That's what I do when I find myself procrastinating. Eventually you will get motivated to binge read and finish it.

Hnk was so depressing that I am now too scared to start oyasumi punpun. Regardless, it's a goddamn masterpiece and has the best protagonist in all of anime and manga.

I get that. My advice is just maybe don't read a lot at once, it sure makes you feel worse if you do that. Maybe read like 5 chapters a day if you're feel like it, but the manga is absolutely worth giving a try!

Well Phos suffers a whole lot during the series so brace yourself.
The manga is incredible though. I could not recommend it enough.

Phos is good but like dude, I can name 5 better characters from the re zero cast.

-Subaru (His development from arc 3 onward is better than 99% of main characters)
-Wilhelm (The whale, Arc 5’s last phase and the EX story)
-Al(Arc 9 and his fight against the felt camp)
-Julius(Arc 3 and 6)
-Priscilla(Arc 7 and 8)

Subaru is more realistic than phos even though I know the author did an incredible job with their characterization. I feel like after sensei meets the lunarians and the time skip, the story started to get very hard to follow but maybe it was also the hiatuses. That doesn’t excuse it though because re zero’s web novel has had just as long hiatuses and I enjoyed both of them a lot but comparing a manga to a web novel is comparing 2 different things. Just wanted to push for more people to actually enjoy an incredible story because this show is like the love it or hate it and the people who don’t watch it come from side where they ask a friend about it and their friend is bashing the show because of Subaru.

I don't know who are the people you said after Subaru but I have to say that having character development doesn't make a character good automatically. So Subaru went from a dumbass to a less dumbass? That doesn't make him good (for example, Lelouch has very little character development and I believe he is the best anime protagonist of all time)
In my opinion, there are a lot more things to consider in terms of how good a character is. Yeah, Subaru is more realistic because it's a normal person in a fantasy world and, in the other hand, Phos is a walking rock in a post-apocalyptic scenario, I don't think being more realistic makes it good either. Also if you wanna consider how good a character is by their development, I think Phos is almost unmatched (maybe Guts, Thorfinn or Meruem can compete with her)
Houseki no Kuni is a much deeper story so it's normal that you had an easier time following re: zero than Houseki no Kuni. I only watched first season and I think re: zero tries too hard being edgy rather than just being a good story and I personally despise that show (I also think that Houseki no Kuni is the best piece of fiction ever, so it's a pretty one sided opinion for me). Re: zero has a good worldbuilding and character designs but that's about it for me
In conclusion, I respectfully but strongly disagree
