this is why i love seinen, they always bring up interesting story, madhouse absolute cinema.

OP was good, and ED by yorushika, her voice is so beautiful to hear, it suits an anime like this, it will be ED of the season if not EVE.

An interesting view on an interesting time in Western civilization as seen by the Far East. I look forward to see where they go and how they tackle the subject

Love the OP, the song and visual both are great, ED is also good.

As for the episode it was decent. Let's see where the plot goes from here.

I suppose that the 25 episodes we're getting will be able to do a full adaptation?

Easily. The opening includes every major character and even one scene from the final chapters.

but Rafal is also losing one of its eyes, probably after being caught with the heliocentrism research, which I suppose is going to affect his studies

Do you mean the blonde guy with scars and covered eye? That's not Rafal.

Ohhh, so I rushed into conclusions I suppose. I was getting a bit scared honestly, because it would really be a big spoiler I feel like. Curious to know who he is then.

Things are getting really serious in this anime. I know it's really early to make predictions, but I have a feeling this anime will be a slow but deep burn like Vinland Saga.

For all the guys like @Joao321 and @Adnash who knows and are into these historical facts: you're right.
It isn't obviously 100% accurate and it introduces a lot of ideas, theories and people of the past only through their theories (ptolemy, aristarchus etc)

Every single characters apart from one is fictional and simply play a very important part in the overall story that you will see in the upcoming episodes. Furthermore this is set literally decades before the birth of Copernicus and it is why it can play with a lot of its themes, ideas and so on.

Answering your concerns about the validity and accuracy of the Church burning at stakes every guy who supports heliocentrism and their unwillingness to cooperate with everyone who tried to answer scientifically to these matters isn't easy, since it will be considered a major spoiler? Even only saying this is a spoiler... well let's say that you will have to wait a lot of eps.

This matter aside, the OP is gorgeous, this is surely from some animators who worked in Frieren? Wish the whole show would look like that!

In fact you are correct. To be precise, the director and animation of the OP are the action director and character designer of frieren respectively. Both are a married couple and they definitely tend to cook on what they work and here its definitely no exception.

Strong opening and ending (the Yorushika buff is appreciated), and another solid episode as a whole which showcases a lot of room for Rafal's character to grow, now that Hubert was executed and he is on the path to wanting to learn more in astronomy and not quite giving up on heiocentrism yet, even if he has to lie to others to achieve said goals. The animation itself is serviceable but the drawings and overall direction are very solid.

Man, Kenjirou Tsuda nails it as always: his delivery is absolutely spot on!

That being said, it was hilarious when Potocki pulled up an admission form with signature boxes on it - it looked so modern and out of place! I was afraid that this anime would have issues with accurately portraying 15th-century Poland, and it turns out I was right. That's not to say I'm not enjoying it though, on the contrary, actually. If all goes well, I expect it to be one of the biggest bangers this season.

Not Nowak the inquisitor again…

Btw, I’m surprised that people are so surprised over the fact that this is not historically accurate. It doesn’t need to be honestly, I mean Nat geo has several such documentaries or used to have(now that they are done), so yeah, this one doesn’t need to add the numbers. Also, anime is rarely accurate with history, and they’d always show church as bad people, so there’s that.

Really felt for Hubert’s death though.

In that situation I would have simply passed off the writing as notes for a work of fiction.

Hubert was pretty cool for being so dedicated and willing to turn himself in to protect Rafal

Heliocentrism vs Geocentrism, let the scholars do their debating. The starry background is a nice touch to a debate on the universe. When one trip on a puddle of water turns your world thinking around XD. Gotta be honest, the sequence with Rafal drawing the heliocentric model was clean.

Hubert protected the future 🙏 yes he's the spark that led Rafal on this path, but he didn't abandon him. He took one for the team, and left his will behind for the next generation. Only for it to be burned a little.

Way to flip the script on the class and declare astronomy on your last day. Like father like son, they all gotta enjoy their stars (openly or secretly).

Kinda weird that the writer(s) and director(s) put so much effort in Rafal's monologues explaining his theories about heliocentrism, but couldn't cement a very important sequence of events that lead Novak to find out Rafal's heretical notes. I mean, he must have had someone keeping tabs on him and Hubert and rat them out (but we never saw it or at the very least heard it from him or any other character).

To me, this important missing sequence of events are a bigger sin than historical innacuracies.

I hope that Novak's whole drawn out scene talking to that kid and torturing his dad had a bigger narrative in the long run other than just let the viewer know he has a daughter and he's a bigger dog's favorite pet by being allowed to work as a married inquisitor. The audience seriously doesn't need to be reminded that he's just a sociopath, unless of course it's all for the sake of the edge. "Thank god" this is a seinen title, right guys? /s

Hubert died passing down his legacy to Rafal. That scene was beautiful. Liking Rafal a lot more now with the change in personality or back to his real self. Scary but accurate on how monstrous and unreasonable people can become in the name of justice or faith. Great episode.

Because they thought they didn't need to as people would understand what happened there as it's very easy to guess, trivial and also expected since Hubert was a heretic so ofcourse they'd be keeping an eye on him.

I think Hubert knew that his days were numbered since he had no desire to stop his research but I question how he knew the exact day that the gig was up since he "released" Rafal on the same day he got arrested. Beyond that, Rafal will need to be more careful on how he proceeds since he already declared that he wants to study astronomy to his soon to be former instructor.

Man this shit is so good I love it but NOOOOOOOO NOT MY NIGGA HUBERT MAN HE WAS A REAL ONE🥲🥲

The opening animation went CRAZYYY especially at the part when the chorus hit and the ending song is so fucking chill and SUCH a vibe to listen to it’s getting added to my playlist right after I write this review haha🔥🔥🔥🔥😩

Rafal thinking exactly like I was thinking “lied and go about things slowly” bc like he said this shit gon take 30 to 40 years and I know bro will NEVER be able to prove the heliocentric model as a kid he’s gonna need to gain influence power and money to make his plan work💸💸💸💸

Rafal right man why does his Dad have so much astrology books in his house? Was he a former astronomer himself? Is that why he’s so insistent on Rafael not going into astrology bc he knows Rafal is gonna find out that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around? Lots of questions that I can’t wait to be answered later in the series🤩🔥

Rafal is way too relatable. I loved seeing him come to the realization that he is just like the fools he criticizes. He even came to the realization that sometimes lying is the only way to truly move forward in a corrupt society. This story feels like a reference to the Allegory of a Cave in a way since Rafal is learning the truth about his world. (9/10)

Really good episode. Hubert sacrificed himself because he followed his intuition and believed in Rafal’s potential to prove his theory. Reason alone can prevent us from thinking outside the box and proving what others believe is impossible. Rafal now understands that following intuition is also necessary

I'm a bit disappointed that Hubert died in the second episode... I thought they would at least research together a bit longer, Hubert being Rafal's mentor... but he died to save Rafal :( glad to see Rafal finally chose to study astronomy.

Nowak is honestly a bit scary to me, but he might also have a secret or two about him, just like what Hubert and Rafal did. I'm quite curious about his past though.

This is starting to remind me of V for Vendetta, because Hubert is correct.

"Did you think to kill me? There's no flesh or blood within this cloak to kill. There's only an idea. Ideas are bulletproof.”

I audibly gasped when he GAVE his life to his little protege because he valued the idea continuing over his own existence!

Also F~ that Inquisitor!! Claims to be a "good" father. How the hell can he sleep at night? The man is a sadist, you can see he actually loves torturing people.

Too bad for Hubert, but at least now he has an heir to his theory, and a clever and determined one at that. I think the father wants him to study theology because he may have already studied astronomy and didn’t get far with it, which might explain why he has so many books on the subject. Or maybe he had another son who studied astronomy and was burned for it, since Rafal is adopted, but there’s got to be some connection—hopefully, they reveal it soon.

Nowak also has an interesting story, being a layman, a former mercenary, and now serving as an inquisitor. He’s definitely the type of man needed for that role.

Things are getting exciting, and the OP and ED are fantastic.
@Narizor Maybe not son, but maybe his friend or someone was burned, and he doesn't want the same thing to happen to Rafal.

-- another engaging ep went by in no time.
-- nowak is a proper cunt. Im scared anytime he's on screen. Theyve set him up quite nicely.
-- rafal struggles to beleive anything hubert says yet it doesn't feel dishonest.
-- however, the main mvp for this ep is the screenplay. Two lines in particular hit hard.
"A wrong answer is not a meaningless one."

"A life that isn't frightening is missing it's essence."

-- that scene reminded me of deathnote.

While I lament the bad history in this show, I think the problem isn't the inaccurately unflattering portrayal of the Church and her conduct per se. Imagined history is by no means a bad thing. The problem is that the author is beating a dead horse with it, and thousands of people are yet again confirmed in their preconceived notions about this issue.
But let's also admit that it's also not as inaccurate as it could be. For example, it doesn't parrot the old hat that the overwhelming evidence at the time pointed to the heliocentric model, while the Church just stubbornly clung to religious dogma when she rejected it. Instead, it fully acknowledges that back then it was impossible to prove the heliocentric model conclusively.
So for now I'm just going to assume that it's simply an imagined history set in a land where an overzealous bishop appoints a layman as an inquisitor and instead of inquiring suspects has him kill them willy-nilly.

I like the story so far! Rafal has finally realized that the louse has bitten him. Last episode I didn't really like how he looked down on others for stepping out of line while being prideful about his "rationality". But fascinated by the heliocentric model, he is now willing to risk losing other's approval in favour of a more truthful way of living. I am curious where the story is headed!
The opening is okay, but I particularly like the ending!
