Interesting that Jolenta's skills are noticed. Also, I find it even more interesting about her own ideals in this show. Felt like the episode was a deeper character study of herself.

Jolenta definitely could've gained valuable experience. Badeni also gives off intimidating charisma with his leadership vibes. Every move he makes seems to have an important value.

Glad that Jolenta finally lost the seemingly permanent look of uneasiness in her eyes but she now I'm worried she's going to make Badeni sorry for massively underestimating her influence. Just hope she doesn't resort to telling dad for Oczy's sake lol

It'd be wild if Piast decided to go against his life's work while on approaching his deathbed in pursuit of truth but I'd respect him for that.

Jolenta is so freaking adorable and innocent but is a very determined girl. She is a scholar and that's what Badeni needed for this research. She had her doubts at the beginning about this whole thing but after talking to Count Piast, she got rid of her doubts, and the same thing that's driving this show forward, Curiosity is what she's after. Curious about knowing the truth of the universe.

Count Piast is also a nice man who has devoted his entire life to Astronomy and because of that he has a goal of perfecting the universe before he dies. He rejected Badeni's offer for now but his love for Astronomy is too much for him, it seems. We saw his little backstory as well. Can't wait to see all four of them make the most out of it. Great episode.

Good for Jolenta, but even our guys are not exempt from viewing her with some misogyny.

Did anyone notice that Jolenta's face resembles Rafal?

I'm in two minds about this. On one hand, an important anime like this deserved a much higher budget and screening in the cinema theatre. On the other hand, being a movie would mean removing many scenes, but they're all important scenes.

In research, all scholars seem to have a thirst for truth...

It's interesting how Badeni views the skills of Jolenta, in that it has a hint of misogyny, yet he still respects her knowledge. He's a very strategic man in how he interacts with people, so that in the end, he can save himself if needed. As for Jolenta, while she was uneasy to begin with, pursuing the truth gave her confidence to research with Badeni and Oczy. I wonder what Count Piast's role will be going forward, as he'd be going against what he has researched his entire life, but knowing the truth before his death might just give him the closure he needs to a fulfilling life.

Yeah, in the world they live in, it's easy to just pin the blame on the woman, depending on the situation. The situation here is unlike any other, where that's the first thought Badeni thought about when she even uttered the words Count Piast lol.

Interested to see if Count Piast will turn a new leaf before he dies, and actually complies with Badeni and co.

Jolenta is so adorable. Out of context Oczy and Badeni looks like a shaddy guy giving her bad ideas. But it's the opposite.

Jolenta like everyone is initially opposed it but it changed. Misogyny is in built to society at that time. So considering all that Badeni still treated her equally while creating a backup for emergency. That's pragmatic smart approch. Piast is the only one who didn't engaged in that but even he had his reservations.

It will be interesting to see how he copes after knowing all his life's work is waste near his end of life. Kind of hard thing to accept even if you say you are seeking for truth.

Another amazing episode from this great anime.

So Count Piast is a good guy, and actually knew that the one that did that work was Jolenta, and not the other guy! And he is quite open minded (which is quite the opposite of what you would expect). With his backstory, where we learn that he dedicated his life to astronomy, even if that cost him his family (honestly, if they are that mad that he followed astronomy, maybe they aren't the best people to have around), we know that he is going to help our main crew to build more on the idea of heliocentrism, even if it makes every work he has done false. But at least, this way, his observations weren't in vain, because they actually helped this new theory!

Also...
+ Jolenta added to the party!

Jolenta is such an interesting character! It's kinda sad to see Badeni and the church just seeing her as a spacegoat for when things go wrong. But I'm sure she will prove them wrong. She was completely right about Piast!

Really curious to see how things are going to evolve from here, because I'm certain things aren't getting all nice and flowerly from now on. And I'm still curious to see if this cast is going to be the main one until the end of the anime, or if there will be another change (and Badeni really won't be the one completing the search).

I'm also wondering who is the young man at the opening, resembling a grown-up Rafal (in the scene where then shows Rafal in a burning house), was it just to resemble how Rafal could be in the future if he didn't die, or there's another meaning to it?

Can't wait for next week's episode! So glad we are getting 25 episodes of this, and that we still aren't half way through.

Also, the opening of this anime still isn't available on Spotify, is it?

I don't think a 25 episode anime could be turned into a 2 hour movie. Maybe multiple movies, but not only one.

Anime of the season and it’s no debate.

Even when it’s just sit down scenes I’m constantly on the edge of my seat and tense because you never know what’s gonna happen next in this show. Kinda didn’t want Jolenta to get involved with Badeni and Oczy because I have a really bad feeling her dad is gonna find out and I’m worried he’ll kill even her. But fuck, sacrifices have to be made to get the truth out.

Did not expect to hear a nominalist mention in here. Ockham and Abelard were two of the biggest philosophical names of the day, and Ockham is where we get Ockham’s razor which is “the simplest explanation is the best one”. As a history and science lover this show is so fun to watch lol

The sit down with Jolenta was so tense. You could feel her wanting to hear them out, but also not wanting to get involved and be labeled a heretic or witch. It’s crazy that if kolbe was in his office instead of the meeting with Piast, she would’ve ratted them out.. it all worked out for the best though since Piast planted those ideas in her head and got her to help Badeni and Oczy.

As a Catholic I love Piast’s line about the bible being the truth, but we might be reading it wrong. You can use the bible to justify almost any heinous deed if you read it without consideration of the social and historical context it was written. In this case, it’s forbidding women from teaching and leading research.

Piast’s backstory was quite interesting as well. It’s crazy how his own family disowned him for wanting to study astronomy! Times have changed. Now you’d get disowned for wanting to study theology lmao. Great episode, have a feeling this is gonna end terribly for Jolenta but I’m here for it.

For the context for Piast's background. The man who gave him the disc asks how close he is to someone, and Piast says he's a distant cousin.

Piast is the name of the royal house in Poland. They've been ruling the country since 10th century up until late 14th. So the person Count is/was relative was the king.

The episodes just fly by—I love this anime!

I understand Piast’s hesitation; collaborating on the investigation would force him to confront the fact that everything he dedicated his life to was a lie. However, he’s someone who prioritizes the truth over societal standards, as he demonstrated by praising Jolenta for her research despite the biases against her as a woman. I’m glad Jolenta had the courage to step up—she’ll undoubtedly be a huge asset to the investigation.

I also love the subtle details! Did you notice that the globe doesn’t include the American continent? It’s such a fantastic touch, perfectly reflecting the era in which the story is set.

@Narizor

I was weirded out by the globe to be honest. I thought they believed the flat-Earth theory. Of course, the known world then didn't include the Americas, so props to them.

It turns out that there were globes in the Middle Ages, only that part of the globe are the heavens. I don't know the details but that's what Google days.

Badeni, Jolenta, and Piast all embody the metaphor of "Icarus" reflected in this episode's title: Badeni's experience of being blinded while seeking forbidden knowledge parallels Icarus's fate; Jolenta defied her father’s warning that “women should do nothing,” much like Icarus ignored his father’s caution. Similarly, Count Piast and the professor pursued astronomy despite their family’s disdain, echoing the theme of reaching beyond boundaries at great personal cost.

Count Piast as a character has such an interesting concept.

I love how the background changed to white when he gave Piast the astrolabe similar to the moments that Rafal, Ozcy, and Jolenta are planted with the seed of curiosity.

Like them, he is adamant in dedicating his life to the pursuit of truth, however I might be getting ahead of myself on this, he still has refused to entertain the "audacity" and has only researched within the boundaries of what is considered at the time "logical". Badeni and the others are on the side of looking beyond the boundaries of "common sense" to find said truth.

By making the concept of through the myth of Icarus, I think he is describing his own issue of hubris.

The idea of chasing "perfection" is clear that the Church's teaching is perfect because the earth is the center of everything. The determination of his cousin to find a "perfect model" was passed down to him.

Why would he ever allow them to contradict and erase his entire lifetime of research? Being close to death and his legacy on the line, he has to be determined and dead set now on "finding" the church's narrow definition of what is "logical". He likely would never change his view even if it was proven as the truth. In short, he chases the sun but never gets close enough to fall. Instead, he wants to refine his research within these bounds like when he compared building wings with steel instead of wax. I'm probably overthinking it just by one full episode of Count Piast.

This anime is very thought-provoking. I love this show!

Also, we now got the trio!

Badeni is pretty shifty sometimes.

Good on Jokenta having a go at standing up to authority.

Piast was referencing 1 Timothy 2 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-38 when he was talking about women being silent and not teach. Though these just reference how women should act in church, so it is stretching it beyond what Paul said in there.

Piast sure has a dilemma of needing to show humility if he is to head toward his goal

Decisions to be made from here on... I feel like Solenta will be killed by her own father in the future, just thinking about it makes me feel apprehensive and fearful...

The episode focused mainly on the two current protagonists convincing Solenta to help them study heliocentrism, We also had the story of Count Piast and his academic training and how he created his ideals. In fact, Count Piast has had a good development since he was younger until the present day in the anime, he is someone who seems to be open to dialogue and new ideas, I feel like our protagonists can count on his help.
Such issues that extended throughout the anime were very well developed, and the way these negotiations follow is great, after all any one of them could die in an instant due to heresy. This is all really risky stuff, which is helping to give the anime's atmosphere a tension so far. Very good!

Yeah I also agree that Piast will have a change of heart as he is pursing truth after all. Speaking of Piast, he knew that Jolenta wrote the last treatise and not Kolbe and he also invited Jolenta to their meetings but I think that could cause issues with Kolbe and others unless Piast tells them to accept her as one of them.

Jolenta needs to believe in herself and her own desire to be a scholar. Science at it's heart is all about the search for the truth, developing various hypothesis and testing them out until they can be proved. The old man, at his core, will need to admit this to himself.

The writing for the characters in this show is amazing, especially Badeni. He might be a main character, but he doesn’t behave like one. To get to his goal, he will use any means necessary, even if it means blaming a little girl for deceiving him into heretical activities and calling her a witch. Jolenta is also well-written. Even though she fears opposing what others believe is the truth, she still wants to pursue what she believes in because she’s a true scholar at heart.

rip working in those days, can't even use your Facebook without getting your identity leaked. Really does work out for Badeni though. Mutually assured destruction with Jolenta's brains.

Nothing like knowing pagan scientific history, as perhaps expected to a degree from a library assistant. Their little chat probing Jolenta with theories is nice. Get her interested in the topic, and rope her in with the ideas that seemed ridiculous to other scholars.

Based old man for telling her to take credit for her work. Perhaps the old man can come to terms with the thought that his work for 50 years was all pointed to the wrong model. He did have his own moment like Oczy's gang back in the day after all.
