Misao's father interesting. And he's much more insightful than expected as he even recognizes Kenshin.

This episode also features more of Kaoru's journey at Kyoto. Tbh, it's funny how she gets greeted. More of a chill episode following what the main characters have been up to.

It might have taken him a whole 7 episodes to reach Kyoto, where actually this arc really starts, but hey, at least Kenshin did. Also yeah, it ain’t really just him, as I mean he wasn’t the only one who departed for Kyoto right? Liked how the moment Kaoru and Yahiko stepped foot in Kyoto, they kind of met Aoshi lol. Can’t have a more welcomed visit than this right xD

Btw, good to see the Kyoto branch of oniwabanshu, characters like Okina making their first appearance in this adaptation. I mean they hold a lot of relevance later in the arc, so yeah, liked how we spent this episode over these characters. We still are in the build-up phase after all, and yeah, if anyone forgot, Kenshin needs a new blade as well. So there was that to be taken care of as well, which of course didn’t actually go well lol. Still, that entry of Shishio was something else.

Misao is excited to be home but Kyoto years on still brings back memories of the bloody battles fought against the Shinsengumi to Kenshin that he fazes out.

Behind the Oniwanban elder's lively personality is a trained spy who knows Kenshin's past.

Unbeknownst to Kenshin, Kaoru and Yahiko have also reached Kyoto. They have to search carefully. Given the sword ban, only Kenshin would be bold enough to carry one but they didn't count on Aoshi appearing (whom Yahiko recognises but Kaoru doesn't since she was at the dojo during that incident).

Sae and Tae, lol identical down to the voice.

From what I remember from watching the live action, next should be the son of the guy who made the Sakabato. WHERE DID KENSHIN GET THE DAIKON FROM? His arguments are sound in the present Meiji era, but Kenshin needs to deal with a remnant of the past, leaving disappointed. Shishio's men have overheard the conversation and it's not going to go well.
Can't wait for the Cho fight next week!

I liked the anime, the OP still amazing - I smilled the whole time xD. - I miss sano, saito and combats. Nice the anime is trying to go a bit far from film. The end of the episode could have been like a wedding. I didnt like the comparasion of the beautiful flowers to swords: it sounded pretty brutal to me - and I dream being a Marine. - Please, the way those 2 man were smilling to each other at the end was pretty gay, dont do it with that kill machine that Shishio is, please. It reminded me from Joker's second film teory: production putting disgusting things in "villains"exactly as you done to make them look worse.

Finally things are gonna get started now that Shishio knows Kenshin is in town. Cool meeting Misao’s dad and the swordsmith. The pacificism is nice and all, but Kenshin’s gonna need a sword and quickly lol. If anything, narratively it makes a lot of sense for a pacifist character to make Kenshin’s new sword, though. Can’t wait to see what they cook up next.

Ending scene is a lil concerning. What’s Shishio bringing in from abroad? Another weapon like what we saw with that dude in the first cour?

Kenshin and Misao have finally made it to Kyoto. They arrive to Misao home basically an old Oniwaban hideout. Learning about her caretaker and who he used to be in the organization was cool. Showing us how far back the Oniwaban group goes. A brief history lesson on the city of Kyoto itself. Definitely the old classical Japanese style city especially compared to Tokyo which is more modern. Kyoto the capital of Japan for over a thousand years so there's a long turbulent history in its stones. Many wars and bloodshed happened here and its got a long record of many sword clashes. Kenshin telling the old man what happened with the other members of the Oniwaban group. Its still very sad how they're gone, they could've been great allies to Kenshin in times like this. Shishio controls this city through the shadows, he's taken over so much that even the most experienced old spy knows he will find Kenshin sooner or later. There is no hiding from Shishio in Kyoto. He will also probably soon know that Kenshin is looking for another reverse sword. A very touching scene as the son of the sword smith confessed to not making anymore swords. He's fully embraced this new era where people don't need to carry swords. Unfortunately for Kenshin there's still one madman trying to reverse this new era who must be stopped!

@Xrotics_13- I think they established from Misao her parents died and weren't involved in making swords, though I don't think we really got much about them. Arai Shakku and all that is mostly relevant for Kenshin's blade, though next episode has a character also connected, iirc. And he's even referenced in the manga recently, with his whole making "swords that kill" principle

@Marinate1016 Had to think a bit, you're talking about Takeda and his gatling gun.

I mean...the Juppongatana all use Japanese weapons. Though I believe Shishio does bring in a more Western weapon at some point and a ship with a thematically appropriate name as well. NExt time probably will be a new Juppongatana, if I'm remembering rough progression of things, but Kenshin also mentions Hiko Seijuro, which is a subplot that'll take a few episodes itself

@SlenderKS The whole of Shishio's group is effectively domestic terrorists, they're not exactly sane or thinking about peace

I can’t believe we’re actually in Kyoto now, in the season that’s called Kyoto Disturbance lol, jokes aside I liked the buildup to getting here, I’m sure it won’t be long now till things start getting serious. The first half of this one was quite wacky too with the introduction of Nenji, Misao’s caretaker, and he used to be a member of the Oniwaban, but instead of a main combatant he was a spy, but even then he was in line to be the next leader until he endorsed Aoshi instead. But all that’s in the past, now he’s just a goofy old man with a great choice in voice actor if that’s who I think it is, he and Misao are very alike lol.

And unfortunately for Kenshin his hunt for the creator of his sword ran cold when he found out the creator is dead and his son is a hippie, not sure how he’s gonna get a new sword now. But one thing is certain, and it’s that it won’t be long until Shishio knows Kenshin is in Kyoto with his boys finding out, not sure who the weird eyeliner guy is with Shishio but I’m looking forward to what happens next.

Misao is an orphan. The old man just her caretaker/guardian. Aoshi had been entrusted by her late grandfather, former Okashira to take care of Misao. Then he handed Misao over the old man to take care of her when he and his men took a dangerous job in Tokyo. The old man not an Okashira just a normal Oniwabanshu Investigator. He first have been offered the role of Okahira, but gave the title to Aoishi as he want a younger Oniwabanshu member to take the role.

@Marinate1016 Hiko was literally someone Watsuki is on record saying he had to be sparing in use of him, given he could basically solo anyone as a Hiten Mitsurugi master. Probably even Enishi, who supposedly had techs that were meant to counter battoujutsu more broadly.

Or are we talking Takeda? Because yeah, he comes back in the manga sequel, albeit he shares the spotlight with a new character and they fight a villain with the gatling gun...at least partly? I'd have to refresh my memory on that, it's One Piece levels of division with all the ongoing fights and such. Even currently, Anji and Sanosuke have one fight, Sojiro and Kenshin another and Cho and Kamatari another, probably some others too

@AnimeSyah Is it weird I swore he was older than he is? By his birthdate and the date there, he's 59, but that's 59 in late 19th century, so he might as well be 70

@Sheol01 I think it's more an act, given it's peace time and he would want people to not take him that seriously, but still be relaxed enough to share info around town. I forget if he did more pervy things to Misao in the original, but not every old guy has to be a perv anyway

After so long its nice to finally see Kyoto. Though the kyoto now is different to the one that Kenshin knows guess some scars would always remain. Painful punishment from Okina. Thinking about it an inn is a perfect cover for an intel gathering unit. Himura just casually getting out a daikon that he swiped from somewhere lol. The reversing cut was really cool.

Hiko Seijuurou mentioned!

Interesting. I was expecting Chou to be introduced this same episode but they decided to slow down the pacing and ended it with the introduction of Shishio's N°1 simp, Houji instead.

So... Kenshin vs. Chou next episode, I assume. Truly looking forward to that since I really liked that fight in the OG anime.

Its nice to know, they finally arrive at Kyoto. Not just Kenshin and Misao, Kaoru as well with Yahiko also arrive in the same day. Wait, Aoshi too. Shishio also looking like preparing something. Wow much more people at the same time giving such an eerie feeling even though the rest of the city vibing a good view. Well aside of that, looking forward to see Kenshin effort preparing a new blade before encountering one of Shishio lackey. Or not....
