I’ve been pronouncing it “Ranma Half” as that is how it is read, but I found out on Twitter that a lot of people call it “Ranma One Half”

I’ve been reading it “Ranma Hanma (半間)” which kinda translates to “Ranma Half Done” or “Ranma Incomplete”

"One Half" suggests 1 1/2 though?
Like, who looks at 1/2 and goes "one half"?

I do know people call it that. Just really don't understand why. Half is half. Why add another word in front of it? Like, my guy, it's half.

Just for clarity, the actual Japanese title is Ranma Nibun no Ichi which translates literally as Ranma one of two parts. Hanma as said by a user above, means incomplete and doesn’t work at all, just Han will do to express half, but Nibun no Ichi, the correct title, precisely expresses one of two parts which is Ranma’s actual state at all times.

In the old anime, the episode previews in the dub said "Next time, on Ranma One Half!", so that's how a lot of people (myself included) say it

Here's an old Viz DVD trailer as well!

Because 1/2 is supposed to be read as "one half". That's how fractions work. Consider 1/3 and 2/3. You can never say just "third", you must say "a third", "one third", or "two thirds".

Just "Ranma" for me. I prefer to remember at least one word of the title. A lot of anime has fucking long names.
Obviously this is not the case but my brain is used to only remember one word 😂

@CherryStar03 +1 and I really love this anime, but Ranma is Ranma for me. It was very popular here in Europe too (old version) so i call it like i did when i was a child.

I'm from Europe too. I grow up with Ranma with Catalan dub, and here we even had a completely different opening (in the original). I'm used to the translations made in my country, so "Ranma" is only "Ranma", the numbers are like the "x" in "Spy x Family" and "Hunter x Hunter" they have no sound. 😂

Me, that’s who. I don’t even know how but somehow despite looking straight at the title “Ranma 1/2” I’ve always mentally saw “Ranma 1 1/2”, maybe because “Ranma One Half” rolled off the tongue more than “Ranma Half”. But more recently I’ve finally acknowledged that the title is actually written “Ranma 1/2” and not “Ranma 1 1/2” I call it “Ranma One Divided by Two” because he is one person divided by two genders.

Plenty often. It is the same structure as 2/3 (two-thirds) or 3/4 (three-quarters), so while it’s easier to shorten, it often just comes out one-half.

Think about 1/3. Would people just say “third” in all circumstances? Probably not often.

Even replacing 1/2 with “a half” would likely be more common than “half” alone, and “a half” is, you know. “one half”

Think about how these symbols get used in recipes. If you were dictating it to someone else, are you likely to say “add half teaspoon of baking soda” or “add a half teaspoon?”

But ultimately it also comes down also to “nibun no ichi.” The word “one” is literally contained therein, and there are shorter words for “half” alone. While no one would want the literal translation of that (too weird, too cumbersome) it can certainly still point to a natural turn of phrase like “one half.”

Not to mention that’s what Viz, owned by ShoPro as it is, was doing from the very beginning.

one half means one times half... which is again, just half

those who look at 1/2 and say one half, generally use the "half" for "/2"

suppose if it is 3/2, they would say "3 halves"

but what would the ones who say just "Half" say? They will also say "Three halves" or "Three by two"
