I don't think it was as bad as people made it out to be. I gave it a 4, but it still wasn't abysmal. Pacing was a bit off, and animation past episode 1 dropped in quality, but the story itself was pretty solid in my opinion.

the thing is. if it was this animation from episode 1, it wouldn't have been that much of a problem. But the first episode set our hopes high

am I the only one who liked it? It wasn't that bad, yes the animation was off sometimes but still I've seen worse. If you don't have high hopes you won't get disappointed, that's what I always do

I agree, Honestly, I don't like the bad ending in the anime. But if we look at it again, the ending actually makes sense. For example, when the city of Kurouzu is hit by a curse continuously without stopping, which of course is strongly related to the title "Uzumaki" which means "spiral" or spinning.

You're right! It's just our expectations that are too high.

I think the same, it was bad but I can't be sad because all the adaptations of junji it are bad, this is the only one that is decent
But like others i really had expectations for the others episodes after the first one .

I agree, it wasn't that bad. Maybe it's because I don't pay attention to details but I never even noticed the animation change.

Honestly the studio hyped it up some too.... It felt like everyone was really emphasizing that they spent 4 YEARS on this.. 💀

Honestly, I think it's decent. It's watchable, but is it anything good / special?? Nah, not at all. It'll be forgotten about in a year or two.

Nah, I don't think so. I agree it was over hyped but I had no expectations from the very beginning because I haven't read manga or heard about it before and even before listening reviews about it, it was already terrible for me. I am a fan of horror either it's anime or movie. But this was below average anime. Let me point out things and then tell me if these are not terrible then what are they supposs to be:

first, terrible pacing. Pacing was fucked up and so was the story. It completely failed to adapt the horror that manga delivered even with still images.

Second, the production issue. Which is the biggest and the most terrible among all. No expressions from episode 2 and onward. Bad animation quality made it worse due to which I felt not a single fear or creepiness while watching it.

Now tell me if these things are in an anime isn't this what we call mediocre or average anime or even below average.

Agreed.

I realize the animation in episode two was pretty bad at times but I still think that the important bits were animated well enough. And in the latter two episodes I only noticed that certain parts were unnaturally sped up.

Besides that, nothing really to note in my experience. I think the series was serviceable for what it was and even somewhat enjoyable.

Tbh as much as the animation annoyed me and let it down a tad. Driving around towns near where I live, all I could notice today was spirals. Ppl put it down, but if you’re still thinking about a manga/anime some time after then it couldn’t be so bad could it

i was not expecting anything as i came in with no idea what this is about.
the animation was as bad as ppl say and with a story relying a lot on visuals and animation it becomes really sh t.
also a lot of plot points i didn't really like.(if there was any plot at all)
i haven't read the manga so i think this is an unbiased opinion.
i also think horror anime in general isn't really scary compared to actual movies or in this case it wasn't really creepy. i think a colored version of uzumaki would be creepier, anyone agree?

It was not wrong to expect a good anime in this case. Several years of working on 4 episodes was one thing, but the first episode, which was absolutely fantastic, was another reason to be really positive about the whole project, and thus to have high expectations.

This anime was not bad per se. It was mediocre. If not that ridiculous quality drop in ep. 2, and the fact that the rest of episodes still were inferior in comparison to the first one, people wouldn't be that much frustrated about this anime, I feel.

Good take on the art style (monochromatic, with realistic designs), faithfulness to the story and themes as it was presented in the manga, were can not be enough when faced with issues such as terribly animated scenes right after cinema we had in the first episode.

People are gonna talk about this anime once this anime season ends, that's for sure. But I have a hunch most of those discussions will be about how good this anime could've been, and how bad it happened to be in reality.

Reply to shogosatsuki
Compared to the manga, it's bad
@shogosatsuki It's as faithful to the manga as it can be, given it lasts only for 4 episodes. Many scenes are literally manga panels turned into animated bits, lol. The biggest issue is that while faithful, it was badly animated in most of scenes. So if you're saying that it's bad, compared to the manga, then depending on what made you think so you risk saying that the manga itself was bad as well.

@seths23 Episode 3 was actually better than the previous one. Yeah, it was mediocre at best in some moments, but hey, it was improvement over what we could "admire" in ep. 2, haha. xD

The story was okay, but the pacing and animation was not.
It could have worked with 6 episodes and being animated by a decent studio and not promoting it while being just a producer in the end, while having two small and weak studios doing all the job, like, I literally never heard of Akatsuki and Fugaku till I watched Uzumaki. One studio literally made only one anime, and the second studio only made a few anime with low to mediocre scores.

the big issue is the steep decline. its probably on the upper end of average if you were to add everything up but experientially that adding up isn't happening

The rating really continues plummeting, doesn't it?

One of the bigger swings I've seen ratings-wise for a series' page on MAL in such a short timeframe. To think that after the first episode it was well up over the 8 range and held up as high art.

I half agree.
The animation was awful but all the nonsense and the story do not change. I literaly laugh a lot with both... BUT the art style in some pages on the manga make me see why it's so famous

To me Tomie and Uzumaki are terrible in terror or story (the two I read), but Junji Ito has an great special talent for drawings
his drawings are too insane and very creative

the anime must to be a masterpiece art work to have any comparison with what he do with draws and like this is not the case...

ive read everything junji ito has ever made, the uzumaki anime perfectly captures his horror and also adjusts his storytelling to the medium. the pacing feels a lot better than the manga itself did and i enjoyed the ending. it gave me the same shudders the manga gave me 3 years ago.

i think people overestimate anime in how it will show itself, when this seems more like a love letter to junji ito's art, which in itself is flawed in its own ways. but thats also part of the beauty in art.

It was bad not only in animation but in storytelling too as there is too much random jump of events. If they make more episodes I guess it would be a little more good and animation is definitely terrible (if you have seen about ep 2)

Read the manga after people here saying to read it. The only thing this adaption did worse than the manga was the pacing of the first story being too fast, the animation being bad doesn't matter at all because everything else is bad. Junji ito couldn't bother making a short story for 20 chapters and gets praised for it while the anime gets trashed. If the manga was good and didn't only rely on gore to disturb nobody would care about the animation.

I was quite scared reading the first story, until it became a compilation of short non-sensical stories with inconsistent characters. I am still mad at the bit where the dumb girl goes to the barber to get her hair cut but then her hair attacks the barber. But then Shuochi casually walks up to her and cuts off her hair?
Caveman draw anime girl on cave, Caveman happy. Cityman angry at cave drawing, Caveman throw club at Cityman.
