like he's playing soccer for the first time in his life 90% of the time? lol
Have you noticed that he talks and thinks about the most obvious things that happen while playing football as if he was discovering some secrets of the world? there are plenty of situations like this from the previous season, such as Isagi running towards an empty goal and wanting to score a goal, but another player runs behind him (i think it was Rin) and prevents him from doing so, and Isagi is like: '' Omg, HOW, how did he predict what I wanted to do?'' like, dude wtf, I'm not a football expert but it's obvious what you wanted to do. This is what playing football is like. His philosophical monologues have already begun this season.
It's actually quite typical behavior of characters in sports anime, but sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's very tiring because it throws you off track, and stating such obvious things makes the audience feel like they're stupid and you have to explain it to them.

The situation is somewhat similar with Tanjiro in Kny. He mentally describes the entire course of the fight or what he does and it's very irritating,
''I have to get up, I have to attack from the left, but it hurts, I have to fight, but it hurts, he's so strong wow, I can't give up, my leg is broken and I can't move (two minutes later he runs normally XD), etc. Manga artists seem to love unnecessary thoughts and conversations

I agree, it really is annoying. He is probably the most boring sports anime protagonist.

Honestly, I don’t really have a defense for him in this case. I don’t pay attention to real life soccer, so I wouldn’t know.

So using that, I assume the reason they did this was so people who aren’t familiar with soccer can understand what’s going on.

That's called 'exposition'. Is a narrative tool to dump information, set the rules or context for the reader/viewer. Is BAD storytelling, because it stops the flow of the story and treats the reader/viewer as idiots, and most series that abuse this use it to order the reader/viewer in what he is supposed to think and feel.

Agreed. He was devouring player's left and right after the midway point of S1, so I'm not sure why he has gone back to monologuing all the simple stuff, like it's still brand new to him. At least tell us something insightful, if he's gonna continue to monologue! 🤦🏽‍♂️

I did not see Isagi evolving too much. It is clear that in Blue Lock are players way better than him and that’s why he was not among top 6 best players.

That's just not true tho. He scored with new tactics/skills in every game of the second selection except for the first game, where they got destroyed by Rin

If you want matches without any inner monologue or dialogues I would say you should watch irl football matches not blue lock.

as someone who watch football all the time blue lock (and not only isagi) is pretty stupid ngl, but it's fun at the same time, like if you focus on details you will hate it but I like to just go with the flow, act dumb to enjoy, that's why I don't hate the way he acts

if you want something that's a more serious/realistic depiction of football watch Ao Ashi, Blue Lock is a lot more fantasy and exaggerated flair for a flashy shonen appeal. I wouldn't take the way it presents the sport, it's players and attitudes towards it that seriously, it's just trying to be entertaining and appeal to a specific niche.

I have to agree with this one, i noticed it in season 1. i dont mind monologues at all, in fact i enjoy characters that use thier brain the most but the Isagi or Tanjiro are really boring and annoying beacause as you said they describe basic and obvious stuff. they really should decrease the amount phrases to only useful ones.
