I showed my father (77) the first episode since he's a history buff, and enjoys science. he seemed to enjoy it but will the rest of series have any echi scenes or things that could throw an newbie off?

No it doesn't has Ecchi scenes. If your father can wait a week for an episode and Remember what happened last episode. Then go for it.
Or just suggest him the whole show when it's close to end. I suggested this considering the age*.

As of now, let him watch till ep 3, then let him decide.

If you are talking about anime about astronomy, I haven't come across any, even most space anime are not even about exploration much and just crazy star wars crap, the only real space exploration is yamato

If you are talking about this kind of historical setting, then I think vinland saga would be the go to

@sDluffy You don’t know what subjective means if you order people around telling them to not “make anything masterpiece.” If I think something is a masterpiece, then it’s a masterpiece to me. If you don’t find it that way then whatever. Thats you. End of story. Bye now😁

Quick update on a few good spacey anime… try Asteroid in Love, a moe astronomy anime. Or After School Insomniacs, a romance centred on astronomy or Irena the Vampire Cosmonaut, a fantasy based closely on the soviet side of the space race but with vampires and racism. All great watches.

@sDluffy I dunno man I feel pretty shook after episode 3, and I very rarely get any reaction out of watching anime. Also if Masterpiece was to be an objective concept, there’s no way every episode of One Piece could be characterized as such. I gave it to episode 200 and I was done with it.

I imagined your fater see ecchi scene and like it x D does he mind japanese voices or is ok with it?

When I tried recommend some anime to people who don't watch anime, it's often the problem - voices. In my opinion japanese voices are much better than english in anime but not everyone likes it.

Bad anime for anyone that believes in the Christian god.
‘It may be admitted that if it were possible for us to have so deep an insight into a human's way of thinking, as it shows itself both through inner and outer actions, that every, even the least incentive to these actions and all external occasions which affect them, were so known to us, then his future conduct could be predicted as certainly as the appearance of a solar or a lunar eclipse.’ Critique of Practical Reason, p. 230 of the Rosenkranz.

@Mackyreels Does not really matter. It really shows how the both christian texts and their interpretion means nothing it is only matter of time when science is going to show how things actually work.

@FutoiOtaku I second the After School Insomniacs suggestion. It immediately came to mind when someone above said they couldn't think of another anime with an astronomy theme. You might give it a shot. It was really well done I thought.

@BromWalar Christianity and science are not mutually exclusive.

@LostSpectre No, simple belief in a god and science are not, but Christianity a science are. Read the bible, it speaks of miracles, science can not have miracles, ergo mutually exclusive.
