Seesh right off the bat this looks better than anything the past two episodes have given us, all thanks to the original team returning... though it was short lived because after the tunnel scene it just went to shit. The short lived hope of the final episode being as good as the first was down the drain as soon as they left the tunnel.

And the story was looking no better. I mean, it makes little to no sense anymore, with way too much going on at once to process it. What started as scary and eerie Uzumaki sightings just turned into randomness for shock value that made just no sense... and god, those Uzumaki hurricanes or whatever just looked so bad...

Though, from what I could get from the episode, is that these guys are just as unlucky as us, with when they finally think all's good with the rescue ships on the way, they got swept up by the Uzumaki's... great lmao. These guys are eating as bad as us as well, from hard and stale ass bread, to the snail people... just wtf man.

Gotta give props where props are due, backgrounds and drawings stayed pretty consistent this episode icl. Actual characters themselves though... lmao. I mean, that scene with Shuuichi falling down with the snail in the Uzumaki staircase should be enough to tell and show you that.

But yeah, in terms of the little plot that made sense, ofc it had to end with Shuuichi and Kirie turning into a Uzumaki together along with the whole town, not really any other way around it. Though, at least the town reverted back right... yeah no just ended up in the cycle as the old... or should I say Uzumkai... sigh.

The Junji Itou anime curse thus continues. I'd go as far as to say that this is the worst one yet, besides the first episode that is. Which is what this show should've stayed as, just that one episode, nothing more.

Ninja Kamui v.s. this in Toonami misses, don't know which would win ngl.

Yeah, besides the production, the choice to condense the anthology format to everything happening simultaneously was just adding insult to injury. It had its good moments, but alas…

This anime was just weird and uncomfortable, especially when they were eating those snail people. Like I get this is supposed to be a horror but I'll like a better explanation on why weird shit was happening and not just blaming it on an ancient curse.

At the very least, this anime gave us this fun coincidenental little bug on MAL

Feels like I’m stuck in the spiral with the takes I’m seeing about Uzumaki episode 4. Yes, it’s better animation than the previous 2 eps but with the amount of time and hype that went into this show it should’ve been way better. Pacing was horrendous as well. Needed at least 2 more episodes.

I’m also just not a fan of how this is ended, I haven’t read Ito’s stuff so I’m not sure if this is the norm, but wasn’t a fan. Our two leads just accepting the spiral and then the cycle repeating feels.. meh to me. The snail and body morphing shit got me uneasy too lol. Idk I don’t like horror stuff so I’m biased, but I also just don’t think this was a good anime.

2 out of 4 episodes were bad to mediocre, pacing was wack, animation was subpar to decent for the most part.. just not good enough considering the build up to release. Episode 1 was amazing tho for sure, but if you’re only doing 4 eps you can’t have 2 mediocre ones.

Miura and Ito are probably just never gonna get good adaptations because of how talented they are and the artistic detail in their manga.

Oh man what a trainwreck of an eps.Pacing felt like it was playing on 1.25x for some of it,chains of dialogue after dialogue with no break in between. And how everything just happens out of nowhere and barely any reaction was a lot worse than previous 2.I was one of few that didnt think eps 2/3 was that bad,but this was.Definitely a poor adaptation, tho felt like some problem wouldnt have been better in the source either.

Its a 6/10 at best

Why was the animation actually pretty good around the last 10 mins. Can't say I hated this adaptation completely and the story was very cool so I'll be generous with an 8/10

The animation slightly improved, but I can’t say it was the best adaptation. I’ve also read the whole manga (3 volumes) and I liked it better + there were some extra stories.

Kirie and Shuichi’s death meant the elimination of Kurouzu Cho’s curse. It seems that everything is normal so far (or maybe not).

Some was cut out of this part like how some brats were behind destroying the town which maybe was taken out for seeming a bit silly or maybe wussing out over their fate, but the changes aren't too bad aside from taking away the poetic monologue in the end of Kirie and Shuichi being entwined for feels to be an eternity but the pacing is really bad messing up any possible tension. Only thing this really had going for it is the unique animation style making it like a manga come to life which sometimes looks bad but other times it is pretty smooth and entrancing. Though the manga ending the pacing I didnt like either with how it just quickly jumped into a future moment with the whirlwinds which was more silly than anything but i dont think the whirlwind riding and all was meant to be scary just extending the theme of spirals. They maybe took some monologue out about the eternity thing because it made no sense with how time slowed down away from the spiral as well as in the centre but the edges of the spiral time sped up relative to the time outside the spiral and if time did come to a still the spiral shrine would have no need to regenerate itself. I feel the underground ruins was more pretty in the manga maybe because more time to look at it and see the details of the line work but the glowing effect I think worked how that was done, im sure it is difficult to portray that in greyscale, the warping kind of took away from the artistry.

Not sure what to rate this because the quality is so mixed a bag and not every change is all that bad but some were and some animation just didnt look right. I dont think it deserves over 7 but not less than 6 for some of the good parts making up for shoddy pacing.

I dont understand why they took so much time to make this but did not invest a little more into it to put in at least five episodes for better pacing and less need to merge stories some of which really didnt work well together. With 6 episodes they could have possibly avoided having to change anything much. Though there still would be issue of quality inconsistency. No one would want to wait a full decade to see this even if the end product were to be very good. I feel they shot themselves in the foot by announcing it as early as they did.

Now for story even as it was in the manga I didnt quite like how things ended since it feels like a buildup that feels incomplete but I also dont hate it because it gives you that sense of hopelessness and beauty. Now I dont think a horror makes sense ending completely happily but I do wonder if a different ending would have been more or less satisfactory such as if Kirie and makes it out but Shuichi dies to save her which would be an ironic fate because she was who was hesitant to leave and he wanted to go first, or if they both make it out but disfigured, how would that have felt.

It's cosmic horror. It's about the unsettling nature of powerful forces beyond human understanding or control. If it were explained you would not feel so much that lingering uneasy feeling jumping through your mind different possibilities but no real answers. Would it really make it better to just slap in a solid "it's a god feeding on the energy of cycles of life and death" or "it's alien lifeforms just continuing their survival by their weird reproductive cycle". It gets done so many times it doesnt feel like understanding makes something this weird better, an explanation would lead to nit picking on how certain things dont match the explanation in a logical way or try to come up with ways to defeat it. Understanding is something you more need in plots where understanding gives you a reason to care about the motives of characters good or bad but when the motive is nothing but survival from a force that doesnt seem to act in rational ways you dont need to understand so much. How you can tell it isnt rational is the people of the town were needed for the spiral ruins to be built new but many people perished without becoming a part of it and sometimes Kirie was a target to be killed and others she was a target of obsession for the spiral wanting to bring her in. I do think that would have been better to have some consistency on how the spirals wanted Kirie narratively but it also would have made things more predictable taking away some possible ways she could die.

Well story is peak and creepy but adaptation was a bit meh.

Atleast ep 4 was good imo.

@nwbodie Because the industry is driven by popularity of the work, not necessarily if its a good story or not. Horror is pretty tricky to adapt when jumping mediums, a 1:1 adaptation wont work, nor will a condensed version done by people lacking talent and creativity.

Overall this work is a waste of potential. 2/10 just for some of the visuals, otherwise it would have gone in the trash pile with the likes of Gate and Gibiate.

I don't think the adaptation would have ever lived up to the hype anyways. The trailer set the bar too high, and it was all in the first episode. I find the source material itself slightly cheesy, so maybe I can't be the best judge of the show, but the pacing was in fact horrible.

What I liked:
Episode 1
The concept of adapting in a black and white setting
The way some of the horror aspects were animated were pretty good

What I didn't like:
Pacing, Execution, the wait for a sub-par product, some of the animation ended up quite shoddy

What I hated:
Episode 2

Overall, a very average show. The pilot had me giving an 8/10 expecting things only to get better, but i ended up giving a 5/10 out of respect for the work, and how good episode 1 was.

The first episode was genuinely great so it's very sad and disappointing to see how the rest of this turned out. All the delays probably should have been a sign, in hindsight. Though you'd think delaying it multiple times would have the opposite effect, right. I think I'll give this a 5/10, but that 5 is HARD carried by the first episode. Without that, this would be a 3 at best.

The first thing I thought was that it was amazing how Kirie and Shuichi could still be sane under such circumstances... especially Kirie. Seeing Shuichi ate that "escargot", I thought he was going to eat Kirie's brother too but it turns out that he did help him. They ended up dying together, in a condition that, I think, was a bit more normal compared to most of the people there.

I hope the couple in the after-credit can escape the cursed city soon.

It's finally over.

Animation-wise, yeah it's better than the last 2 episodes. But it doesn't come close to the production value of episode 1. So, the early rumor of the last episode being done by the same studio/people who made episode 1 was false. Or maybe it is true and the episode was just rushed like the other ones. Idk which one's worse. There were traces of some good art here and there.

Animation aside, although the pacing was bad since episode 1, this episode probably has the worst pacing out of all of them. Even tho this was an extended episode, there was basically no room to breathe for anything. It was just characters yapping one line after another. The direction was horrible too. It felt like there were scenes missing from one scene transition to another. Idk what it's called. But if you notice it once, you can't unsee it. This episode's story alone could've been 2 or 3 episodes. If not, they easily could've cut some scenes to make the pacing better. Now I understand why some adaptations cut scenes from the source material instead of trying to adapt everything. This series would've been way better if it was just a movie. Why even make 4 episodes? How did they fuck this up so badly? Well, if I have to give props to something it's that the sound design was still amazing and so was the voice acting. The background artworks were also gorgeous. But with that animation and pacing it feels like they were wasted.

It's just sad how this adaptation was handled. Episode 1 showed that it could've been something special. But no, internal drama had to ruin everything... It sucks because the story is genuinely interesting. I like how this town is basically cursed and the cycle will continue no matter what. Horror series' rarely have a good ending and this one was no different. It's sad that in the end Shuichi and Kirie couldn't run away... But at least they were together till the end. That's the closest we can get to a happy ending...

I feel bad for the author. I think I'll just start reading Ito's mangas. I don't think I'll give a chance to another Junji Ito adaptation.

Animation was much better. Would have made the show a 10/10 if they kept that same animation for 4 episodes. (They made these 4 episodes in 5 years btw).

Ninja Kamui v.s. this in Toonami misses, don't know which would win ngl.

the ending is shit but still it's better than JJK. Gege you need to learn something from Junji Ito sir.

When even time itself started spiraling on Shuichi and Kirie, I was certain this was going to end right back at episode 1. I guess facsimiles of the two work too!

This was an enjoyable watch. I was really rooting for the MC's. But the wicked phenomena just toyed with them until they became the new center of its grand design.

I didn't hate this. Was this the adaptation that Uzumaki deserved? No, but it wasn't the trainwreck I was fearing after seeing second episode. Even if the second episode was actually fine, this would still be hard to recommend to someone who hasn't read the manga, due to them having to rush and cut thing's, but the part's that worked, did work pretty well.

I guess I'm satisfied with just that.

Shame that they had to add that little narration to the end, because the ending would have been better without it.

The last episode actually turned this series something memorable, the whole story turned out to be some kind of lovecraftian eldritch horror.

Kirie começa a perder a família.

When this anime was announced I was stoked ... but now that I've watched it ... they should have just canceled it after episode 1. Then it could have ended on the premise of greatness.
