Should I watch this version of Ranma 1/2 or the older one? Which one is better in terms of storytelling? I don't mind the animation style as long as it isn’t awful.

tbh it's really up to you, the new one is well new so there's only 2 episodes so far compared to the 161 of the og so there's not much ground for much comparison rn but from what we have so far i am really liking the new one due to how much more fun and dynamic the animation is and with it (apparently) following the manga closer you can expect a quicker and faster experience.

I love the remake so far but I think the og is also pretty good, and there are some filler episodes from the OG that I do like that won't be remade in the remake.

fwiw I would recommend the remake but the og holds a special place in my heart and I recommend it too

I binged the original before the new skipping all filler which rounds to about I think 90 or so episodes of canon and canon/filler. Though not nearly as fun as the remake, it’s still extremely good imo including the movies and OVA’s. It’s very much worth watching especially if your like me and want it to be uncensored unlike the remake but I mean, if you don’t care about such a thing but the story aspect, wait for the remake to finish as it follows it much closer. I only binged the original to compare to the remake. So far, I highly recommend either.

i say stick to the remake since its more faithful to the manga so far plus the pacing is fast so its not as boring as the filler full old version

I suggest the remake because it is being released with a new but very decent style.

As someone who has read the manga, and watched the original anime (just the canon episodes), the original 1989 version is better. The 2024 remake is inferior.

Also, the first 13 episodes of the 1989 version seems to be a pretty straightforward adaptation, by adapting the manga chapters in order, but after episode 14, it would start adapting the chapters out of order, but not completely skipping adapting the chapters. I'm expecting the remake to just adapt all the chapters in order. We'll see when the remake adapts chapter 23 onward. But for now, I'd say at least the first 2 episodes are better in the 1989 version, even if it does have padding. So I think you should watch Ranma 1/2 (1989).

after seeing the first two episodes, it is my opinion that the original is better in every way.

In terms of narrative, both are the same, in terms of visuals I prefer the old version, but this one is still great too.

as someone who watched about 20 episodes of old one before I saw remake coming I can say with certainty that remake is so much better and as other people said more faithful to manga. There is good chance this will also be complete adaptation unlike old one which stops. Anyway the remake is definitely way more enjoyable and better to watch cuz of nice visuals and all. You have no real reason to start old one now, you will just spoil yourself for new one too. Also maybe I don't remember it too good, but new one seems a bit rushed to me unless old one had fillers even at start, anyway new one better without a doubt with great visual, animation and all.

I like the remake though the og is a lot less censored. I say enjoy the remake. After that watch the og.

I haven't watched the old anime, but I've read the manga and find it funnier than the new anime. The 2008 special is great as well.

The old by far. This censored abomination, unfortunately, doesn't hold a candle. It was the same with Urusei Yatsura, and it will be the same with any other sanitised re-releases of older series.

@Lolipops This is not a "re-release", it's a completely new adaptation.

And boo fucking hoo, if you only care about seeing nipples in a series like this then good riddance either way.

So far, the remake easily. I only saw a few episodes of the original, but it felt pretty dry. In comparison, I loved the manga, and I'm enjoying this adaptation much more than the original so far as well.

God you tourists are weird when you try and generalise it to only that

I went in on this without any expectations but I have to admit that this remake is good so far.
It took me right back to the past and its as ridiculous as I remember.

Not gonna give it a definite rating after just 2 episodes but if i had to, its solid 7/10 so far.
will see how it will change over time.

As an old manga fans since it first released, I watched all the old original anime as well. I would say that the manga is better than the original anime. But the original got the “sense and feel” of the manga.

The new adaption is just far inferior. The bright coloring, changing hair color for most characters. And the facial impression of the characters just give out another vibe. The way they handle Akane just made her more unlikeable. And seriously her hair color is black, not some dark bluish purple.

I know it’s only two episodes. But I’m pretty disappointed at it. I have high hope for this anime as I grow up with it.

Hard to say after only two episodes, but so far this one feels a bit sterile to me. It's not making me laugh as much. Episode 1 was funny enough, but episode 2 kind of bored me. Again it's only 2 episodes so who knows how I'll feel by the end! The bgm feels generic and forgettable compared to the more wacky original soundtrack which helped with comedic timing and gets stuck in my head to this day.
