The Potocki surname comes from an old Polish family - they were Counts or Hetmans. YES! Surprisingly, the Potocki's were magnates of Poland and Ukraine in particular. There is even a village called Potocki in Poland. And what we see is NOTHING like Poland. It looks more like medieval Italy, England, Germany or Spain.
If anyone thinks I've exaggerated about the Potocki, I'll explain. One of my great-grandfathers was a chauffeur for Count Potocki.
That's the end tho. It was a good anime, but it's a pity it's so short.

Honestly, I'm loving this. I thought I would love this but I'm loving it way more than I expected. So is that it? Rafał is also dead now? Hubert and Rafal dead now. He really chose death wow. Still, his inspiration will continue on.

Seriously though never thought I'd really lose the MC after 3 fucking episodes wtf. Honestly though I expected him to survive the poison or whatever and then time skip after the fake death but now he's literally been burned at stake into ash like he can't come back from that right? Unless he didn't die from the poison and someone freed him from the stake?

pretty great start to the anime for what id assume has been the "prologue" so far. Rafal's death might have been quite surprising, but u also gotta realize that science was built on the foundation and theories of hundreds of people over thousands of years. historically, it makes complete sense for his works to be passed down to the next generation, just as Hubert passed down his knowledge to the boy and as Potocki did towards Hubert (and Rafal both)

im glad that the thematic focus here is exploring the reality of their world, and not the characters themselves.

@saccizord

I absolutely expected Rafal to find just the right words to convince the inquisitor to not kill him. Like, challenging his faith, the church, something. Like "I'm not fighting the church. But what if they misunderstood god? What if heliocentrism is the truth and god is disappointed that we're following geocentrism?" Something like that.

But no. Guy just accepted his fate. Wow.

offers a thought-provoking narrative that explores the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. The animation is striking, with a unique art style that enhances the storytelling. The plot delves into ecological themes, showcasing the impact of human actions on the environment. While some viewers may find the pacing slow, the philosophical undertones and character development create a rich experience that encourages reflection on our responsibilities toward the planet.

Third episode and I am still wondering if this is going to be another one of those shows that used Christianity as a way of only antagonising it or will it be a decent historical fiction that portrays it for its positives and negatives in good faith.

As one who is into theology but not so much into this period of Church and Christendom history I do have a bunch of comments to make.

1. Heliocentrisim v.s. Geocentrisim.
Why is this even such a concern that it is being considered heresy to adhere and/or research? This is like the argument of Flat Earth v.s. Round Earth where the Bible uses language as if it were speaking of a flat Earth because it was the world view of the writers which some may take literally but personally I take as symbolic language (like the phrase "four corners of the Earth" referring to geographic completion). There is also the argument of Young Earth v.s. Old Earth where the numbers are seen as either literal or symbolic.

Either way, to me all of this is of lesser concern as it does not have anything to do with ones Salvation.

2. Burning a body to ash resulting in no afterlife.
To me this is closer to falling under heresy, dangerous thinking, or at least incorrect theology and teaching. There are multiple passages I would like to go through but before that you should know that humans are composed of either trichotomy (body, soul, spirit) or dichotomy (body and soul-spirit are the same). Regardless of which is correct, for here I am going to split it into body and consciousness.

The question then lies, what happens to these when they separate upon the individuals death? Before the Death and Resurrection, no matter what, the individual's conscious would go into Sheol. That is the Hebrew name for the Underworld which may be translated into grave or pit. Those who were saved went into a section called Abraham's Bosom (Luke 16:22) until they were brought out to be transported to Heaven where all believers go straight to when they die (Matthew 27:52-53). If unsaved they remain there until resurrection.

With the body, it returns to the dust of the Earth (Genesis 3:19). We know this does not happen literally when a corpse begins to decompose but the typical thing to do is bury the body which in a sense is returning to the Earth. So what is to worry if the body get grinded to ash? Adam was made from the dust of the Earth (Genesis 2:7) and the Dry Bones (Ezekiel 37) get unraveled and reconstructed with their flesh but no Breath of Life. Now if that be possible for God to do, what makes them think He can not resurrect bodies starting with ashes regardless if they were the original?

Also there is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah which were two cities that were brought to a fiery end for their wickedness (Genesis 18-19 <- II Peter 2:6). These two would later get mentions in the New Testament, mostly by Jesus linking them to Judgement Day. If you do not know what term is, it is right before the New Heaven and Earth where all of humanity is resurrected (Daniel 12:2) into immortal and indestructable bodies (I Corinthians 15) but the ones whose sins are not washed away by the Blood of the Lamb will not enter the Kingdom, stand before the Great White Throne and receive eternal punishment (Revelation 20:10-15).

Just how in the hell did Christendom in the past ever think this way? If Annihilationism (the unsaved return to nothingness rather than damnation) or Universalism (another false teaching that believes all of humanity will be saved because the unsaved will go through the process in the afterlife) then would it not cause people to believe that Salvation is a luxury, the consequence for sin i.e. damnation not severe, and the need for Grace is not urgent?

3. Antagonist's disregard of the words of those heathen.
I think it makes sense for the Church to give regard of those philisophers with the fact that those are cultures that had some inspiration on the Bible (like how the New Testament's original language is in Greek and the existence of the Septuagint) and Hellenised Judaisim. Though of course there does need to be some discernment. And was Claudius Ptolemy even an adhereant to Judaisim or Christianity?

4. Suicide.
A contrivercial topic indeed where the dichotomy is either: if you do it you are 100% unsaved no matter what v.s. an individual who does it can still be saved as long as he held to faith in Christ. There is the story of Samson who had many issues and was on the verge of execution but commited suicide in a way that would take his enemies down with him (Judges 16:23-29) yet his name is included in the Hall of Faith (Hebrews 11:32).

Rafal was so smart.

Once he stated that he did indeed believe in heliocentrism in front of the entire crowd, I already felt the path he had taken. And knowing that he knew well of the interrogation done to heretics, I wasn't so surprised that he chose to poison himself.
But I was more surprised with his, at first seemingly illogical, determination to continue preaching heliocentrism after we (the audience) were prepared that 'okay, he's going to do the smart thing (for his life) by just staying quiet, become a theologian, and do astronomy on the side' akin to real life Copernicus. But nope!
He possessed so much faith in heliocentrism and awe in the effects hubert had on him, that he chose to take a similar route. Passing the torch. It really highlights artistically, if not realistically, the effort, sacrifices, and faith of humans for the sake of progress/knowing the truth, etc. In this case, it's heliocentrism. And that's why I think this story is potentially beautiful, at least partially, because it embraces the similar energies that had so strongly affected both hubert and rafal.

I was also surprised with the overreaction of the inquisitor. I don't know the rest of the story, but I'm sure it had a strong affect on him too. Not only because it would be the poetic thing to happen, but because his world views are seemingly the complete opposite of rafal's vision. It isn't just about 'earth centrism is how it's taught and how it should always be', but also about the values different people hold and how certain actions by a person who possesses different values/perspectives than you seem completely insane. Moreover, I believe he overreacted towards the end to rafal's words and actions, because ' it's just some stupid smart ass teenager trying to act tough or find an easy way out '. But I do admit, at the same time it is entirely believable that, even a fictional anime character like that fake inquisitor, would overreact to rafal's actions because it's such a human reaction. Not knowing various tropes in other media, rafal's actions are truly brave, crazy, reckless, hopeful, insane, genius, etc.

It seems to me that rafal's actions spoke louder than his words, but simultaneously his words were his action. When he said that he truly believed in heliocentrism and that it is known a young man/teenager like him gets punished so cruelly, so swiftly, just for some words, such a result is bound to have a ripple effect on society. Whether small or big.

Like how rafal quoted hubert, the wrong choice was also meaningful.

(personally, until recently, I was under the assumption that Copernicus faced a fair deal of scrutiny for his studies in heliocentrism. Not as dramatically depicted in fiction, but still a fair amount. However, according to his biography on the wikipedia page about him, a good number of people in the catholic church including the pope had a favorable outlook on his research. Although there was still societal pressure when it came to interpreting precisely how astronomy affected theology, the notion of heliocentrism was simply an 'innovation' in early scientific thinking back in the early 16th century. )

I was already loving this series, now it's Anime of the Year contender for me (if we consider Frieren a 2023 anime).
Rafal was talking like had seen the truth of the world, and in a way he had. These beautiful quotes embody his idea perfectly:

  • "No one has experienced death, yet everyone assumes it is the greatest evil" - Rafal paraphrasing Socrates
  • "When we exist, death is not; and when death exists, we are not" - Epicurus
  • "Life is long if you know how to use it" - Seneca
  • "You are sacrificing your life for something you don't understand. Can't you see how this is madness?"
"You are right, but you could also call it 'love'." - Rafal

The church might have won the battle with both Hubert and Rafal, but as long as the war is won, it doesn't matter who wins it.
Death is not but a temporary setback for the real Main Character of this show: Heliocentrism itself.
While humans are susceptible to death ideas will continue to exist as long as there is a vessel for them.
The truth will one day be revealed. Human curiosity will always lead us to it.

Three episodes in and this might me a hidden sleeper anime of the year. Wow does this feel like watching Vinland Saga all over again. It feels nice going into an anime completely blind, seemingly on a whim with just a poster as recommendation. Glad I binged watched the first three episodes, it definitely feels like it was intended to be watched that way. Could even say that if the show was just a movie made from those three episodes, it would leave me satisfied, but knowing there is 24 episodes, it peaked my interests and my excitement is high.

I was so busy lately and had a little time, so I watched this right away 3 episodes at once. If anyone here was surprised with rafal guy being dead, then imagine how I felt having watched all 3 episodes at once, to me it feels like his character is just about to develop himself but got killed even before he even get started. I feel like I didn't really know him that much tbh, that was really fast, like saying farewell to a person after just meeting them for first time, definitely what did just happened!? moment. I don't know if watching these first 3 episodes on time like 1 week per episode would've had the same effect to me... xDD But I'd really like to see where this series goes...

imagine advocating for the wrong version of our solar system when geocentrism advocated by the church was in fact the correct model all along. flat earthers were proven right so rafal deserved to get fired for his ignorant blasphemy. he should have done his due diligence better and i will die on that hill.

I really didn’t expect this to happen so early, it was a great twist. However, as usual, you guys are overreacting to the value it brings to series. Chi was already my second most anticipated anime coming to season, so I expected a unique narrative and it hasn’t disappointed me so far in that respect. The pacing and the story-telling nuances of these 3 episodes could have been better though. There were not enough exposure to Rafal as a person to strengthen our identification with him to make this outcome more striking and emotionally satisfying. Hopefully, it will get better in terms of plot development and become an unforgettable experience.

The saving grace of the Fall season.

If this were a shounen, Rafal would have gotten away with some talk no jutsu or a 3000 IQ move (like "the poppy willl fake my own death for a few hours, so I'll conveniently escape when the guards won't expect it!"). I don't mean to hate on shounen, but for stories like this one a seinen magazine is straight up better.

Holy fucking shit?! I am so glad I knew nothing about this show beforehand, the key visuals, OP, ED, they all lied to us, like how Rafal do be lying.

But in a way, Rafal will live forever in infamy. But who and how did Rafal pass on his heliocentrism knowledge for it to be only discovered 10 years later?

Rafal was only with us for 3 episodes, but by God, he left such a lasting impact.

Now I also have a theory that we will keep switching protagonists, all those people in the key visuals and OP, continuously passing the knowledge until it gets acknowledged as the truth.

Man, I can't wait to see where we go next. Also, I need a full version of that OP ASAP, it's so good.
