The anime is good, people just made it out to be a 10/10 show which revolutionizes the medium as a whole. Obviously it can't live up to that

I found the marketing/hype more enjoyable than the show itself.

Absolutely, whole thing is about the nokotan/opening song memes, nothing else.Whole plot is so random bullshit even for a absurd comedy anime.

Imagine being so dull you have to judge something or be influenced based on hype/marketing rather than forming your own non-clouded opinion. Perhaps if don't watch series or play games based on any type of hype, you'll find that you'll hardly be disappointed anymore and that you'll give a more honest judgement of the material.

Because now you went in because of the hype, thinking it was the greatest show ever, you got disappointed and (unconsciously) subtracted one or several points from the rating purely because of that disappointment. Whereas if you came across this show randomly you might have given it a vastly different rating.

It's not cool in any way to be in the 'Look at me I hate this vastly popular show'-group as many people on MAL seem to think... I know it's something angsty teenagers like to do these days... but damn.

People do realize they can watch trailers and read a synopsis before starting a show, right? 99.9% of the show's essence is visible in the promotion videos that were released before the show aired. You would have figured instantly that this show would not be something you like, but instead we have a group of people here hate-watching something because they think it's cool to be a hater.

@Oriorii I'm a fan of stupid silly humor like nichijou, but at least they made fresh jokes often, here it was the same joke over and over again. For me, it had its moments but it got old really quick

" Yes! Yes...! Let your rage fuel you!!! "

Yeah I kinda agree with what you said. At the very least, I don't think it's the starfield of anime even though it does seem like an apt description at first glance to some. Like some others in this thread have said, it's just a show with stupid humor that did a good marketing campaign and isn't a masterpiece, but it isn't an actually bad show either.

I guess people who didn't enjoy it could say it's overrated, but I liked it.

seeing this anime everywhere on the Internet, i hoped that it would make me laugh like Asobi Asobase did or Prison School. But sadly I am actually bored when watching this. So it gets a 6 from me bcz the jokes are too random and a miss. A shame bcz it had a lot of potential imo and the intro song is so damn infectious

it's absurdist humor. it's not for everyone but that doesn't make it bad. it just means you don't appreciate this style of humor. it's like how a lot of people don't appreciate the tim and eric show but some people think its genius.

I think it's absurdity which covers most of the topic. ฤฐt was said like it is a godly anime but we have already encountered animes that included narrators to the continuation of the story and characters talking about the anime itself or further seasons. ฤฐncluding deers doesn't make the anime explain something different about daily life but it surely makes it unique. To be honest, this is the first time I've watched an anime which has deers at the center of it. What really matters is having fun so we don't have to use literary analysis here excessively.

I can’t say it is as bad as something like Starfield (mostly because I never played Starfield.) I feel like the anime itself was intended to be the physical embodiment of brain rot. It doesn’t have some complex message or some in depth discussion of some kind. It is designed to shut your brain off and enjoy the madness. Think of it similarly to Bobobo. Does it make the show bad? Not in my opinion at least.

@namesrowan +1 and it is sad. I really wanted it to be another lucky star, nichijou or saiki-kun. Really love the surreal humour, too much time without one really good.

This is one of the worst shows I've ever tolerated.

I couldn't make myself stop watching it after I had watched so far, but I was hoping that there would be something a little entertaining and there wasn't.

A whole lot of stupid that made me dumber as I watched it.

Idk how it's going, I dropped it. It had some funny parts for sure, but I'm not gonna watch a comedy where the humour falls flat more often than it lands. Couldn't get into Nichijou either, but from what I remember I think that had better humour than this.

Plus, thehikanokonokonokokoshitantan scene (idk how else to describe it, but you know what I'm talking about) that went viral? So much better than the actual scene, which was borderline exhausting to watch

Got bored half way and dropped the deer show.
Kinda unfortunate, cuz this show has no plot progression, so if the comedy part is not funny, it's pointless to watch.
For a lot of other comedy show, at least there is a plot there to follow, so even if they're not that funny, it's still fun to watch. (Konosuba/ Kaguya , etc.

Well the trailers make stuff look funny. They put the best jokes in there you know. The synopsis made it sounds stupid and hilarious. It just got very samey. Shikanoko removing her horns to do X activity or Koshitan's sister being a siscon can't exactly carry a show. I did really enjoy episode 11 though with the deer Hunter. That's the kinda random shit I wanted from this show.

But to be fair most of the humor in the show lies in word play that can't really be translated to English, and I don't speak Japanese so I don't get lost of the jokes.

TBH, it's more about how bad and shitty they're using the jokes, where the overwhelming majority of it feels forced and also repetitive, which gets old really fast.

I mean, I also watched other animes that uses the same kind of jokes like Shirokuma Café for example, but I can still enjoying that show much more compared to this one, because the jokes there flows more naturally, and it doesn't felt forced at all, on top of Shirokuma is a much more lovable character compared to Noko.

So yeah, this series have a problem in execution, where the staffs clearly never had any experience in making a comedy gag anime before, hence it felt really rough.

With all due respect, I disagree. Imho, this anime was a masterpiece of "absurdity-humor", nonsense jokes mixed with a lot of "goodhearted" atmosphere. Of course, those who were expecting something "more" serious, "smart", or even, something with several layers of drama construction - will be disappointed.

On the other hand, if you were expecting "nothing" - I'll bet you will laugh and enjoy Shika's world.

I liked it, a lot !

@LFChocair to be fair, even if I had zero expectations out of this show, the amount of repetitive jokes, the overplayed straight man role that Koshitan played, and the horrible comedic timing and pacing this show had really made the whole experience incredibly off-putting. But glad to know you were able to enjoy this. As someone mentioned in the forum earlier, the trailer was genuinely more funny than the entire show. Well, at least that's the case for me and a lot of other folks.

I agree with the general sentiment that we shouldn't let expectations cripple our enjoyment, but the PV is what drew in most people. Most people actually watched it on their own and thought "this was hella funny." I remember them dropping it like 3 months before the anime started and thought this was peak well before the hype from the trailer and 1 hr opening song loop. The synopsis also reinforces this.

Anyways, I would say that this anime is also different when it comes to expectations too because it immediately shows its consistent level from ep2 onwards. Usually anime will slowly flicker out or have a bad ending, but this anime has been the same for the last 11 episodes. Most people that have made it this far and completed the anime has already gone past whatever disappointment they had initially within the first 3-5 episodes and are really just judging based on its actual quality now.

@Ventus_S I dont know the Marketing, Hype/Trailer for Asobi Asobae. I watched it with no expectation. And Man, It was one of the FUNNIEST anime I ever watched! even when I rewatched it 3 times, its always got some chuckle to me.

My Deer Friend Nokotan Marketing, Hype/Trailer makes its the most stupidest and funny comedy ever, and the same parallel with starfield, some people already called it THE GAME OF GENERATION, and when the actual game come out, the rest is history. same thing happen with Nokotan.

starfield didnt have hype at all, literally every bethesda game enjoyer was asking about elder scrolls VI even during the starfield announcement, and the months leading up were full of people saying exactly what the game turned out to be "as vast as an ocean. as deep as a puddle"

@Zimzky It feels kind of like these character tropes work well in a show with a good story, or some bigger goal going on. But when you throw out the overarchings story or even a simple goal, these jokes aren't unexpected and all you do is just wait for the next joke hoping it will be good. Which most of the time in this show I have to question myself if I just witnessed a joke that was supposed to be funny.
