Not a fan of the City Hunter Movie length specials so far. Much like Magnum I think this special just doesn't do enough to justify the longer running time.
It just feels like a 2 part story, which would normally be about 50 minutes (The two OVAs were much better for being just 50 minutes), dragged out to a full 90 minutes. The middle part of the story was very slow and plain to me. It probably doesn't help that I've marathoned everything from episode 1 of City Hunter 2 up to this special in about 3 weeks so I guess the formula is a little more stale for me right now.
I mean the whole fake country turmoil thing and somehow Japan of all places being the place someone from this clearly western country alot of the time has ended up, though I guess the Mother and Daughter meant there was more justification for it this time than in times past. I don't know there has been ALOT of these stories in the show which again when now dragged out to 90 minutes with little to no real change up in the formula it just got boring to me. I might be being alittle overly harsh though.
I was slightly disappointed in the animation as well, this was the first time in 5 years that City Hunter had aired in Japan and I was hoping for a slight bump in visuals and maybe character designs. There was some minor changes and some more dramatic action scenes here and there (the Mini/Speed Boat chase) but nothing too incredible. Again perhaps I'm getting my hopes up alittle too much as this was just a TV Special after all. Though the Lupin specials of the time were of a higher standard to this but then again Lupin is a bigger franchise...
Goodbye My Sweetheart was also a TV special I believe (despite the English version occasionally being called the Motion Picture for some reason) so not sure if I should expect anything different, I guess I'll find out later today.
Oh I gave the special a 6/10, incase anyone actually read my comment and was curious. |
