I just finished it and the couples really made me happy
Among dozens of mangas that I read, this was the first with the pairings that I wanted.

An ending that, whilst not great at least wrapped up the central conflict. This final arc was a pretty big tonal shift from before the timeskip (and kinda a redo of an arc from Gash Bell) and it had it's ups and downs. The constant battles started to ware on, but despite this the manga never lost it's heart. It stayed true to its themes to the very end, and had a final battle that was truly a sight to behold. While overall I don't think this series ever reached the heights of Gash Bell, it was a pleasant read none the less.

7 years later and it looks like they’ve all been busy banging.
Tarouza and Capri ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Interesting themes in this manga and some truly bizarre a character designs. But they made me feel a little nauseated because there was so much going on.
The first half was fine but after the time skip it became endless bullshit battle Shounen.
I wouldn’t call this a bad manga but the second half felt incredibly tedious to me, I really didn't enjoy it at all.

I loved the concept of Doubutsu no Kuni, even if it wasn't as well executed as I was expecting after the great first couple of chapters. It became quite rushed during the adult arc with some convenient and unexplained things happening just to move the plot foward.
And my main issue with the manga as a whole: there are so many characters and the battles are so grand, with armies by the last couple of chapters, that I had to stop everything to understand what was going on, and I'd still left a bit confused. When there was too many things happening at once I'd think "okay, there's a battle going on, let's just read the dialogue and figure out who's saying what" and call it a day.
But at the end of the day I really had a blast reading it. I loved the characters and some of the emotional moments. I just, again, wish there was a little more character development for others that weren't Tarouza, Capri or Giller.

I felt the same way during many battle scenes. Too much happening at once made some panels feel like a mess.

I'm just trying to figure out the pairings - Tarou and Capri / Jyu and Riemu?

Loved the first part of the series, as it explored various themes intertwined with humans and animals. While I understand a time skip was needed to age the characters and continue the plot, it really went full battle shonen, and the relentless grind to the top of the tower was tedious. Still, I enjoyed the philosophical ideas presented by the author - from what it means to be human to the ideas of what truly is it to be living or have purpose, and entertaining the idea of a utopia where meat consumption no longer becomes necessary for carnivores/animals that need meat in their diet.

Yeah, while it's a pretty unique story there were many plot holes and at times the characters behaved in stupid or odd ways. Many questions are left unanswered by the end, like what was the deal with that deer in the Babel Tower, who is the father of Moko (and no, I don't think it was Piman, that was a non-canon joke) and why did Elaine die at such young age. Elaine didn't really get a solid closure, though her introduction didn't get much of a build-up either so that's fitting.

It's too bad Moko ended up being basically useless for the entirety of the story, her existence wasn't even much of a drive for Tarouza with how much more there was at stake in general. She almost barely spoke and it didn't feel like there was a bond between her and her adoptive brother, at least nowhere near as strong one as there was between Tarouza and Monoko.

Llama Akiko omakes were delightfully cursed and the Riku omakes gave me mixed feelings when reading this in 2023 and knowing that the dog is probably dead now (he was 7 years old in 2010).

I think this is makoto raiku worst series. the tanukis at the beginning honestly just looked nightmarish to me. I did like all the feline characters in this manga as well as the bear. it was slow start to this series didnt really grab m until chapter 15 and even then between the plot holes and overall sorta generic story in this series this was definitely not the best. the art was good when more chracters got introduced and while the plot seeemed similarto zatch bell its not nearly as great as Zatch Bell overall I'd give this series a 4/10
