Urusei Yatsura is better than Ranma (personal opinion)

Major reason is that it's a similar story but in Ranma 1/2, the author swapped Lum into an inferior role (Shampoo), being a much more charismatic character but is not the lead heroine. While Shinobu became Tendou Akane, who's as boring as Shinobu but is the focus of the story (beside Ranma).

To make it even worse, they have to cut Akane's hair short, destroying her attractiveness even further.

Also, the plot in general is just a watered down version of Urusei Yatsura. Now no more alien stuff but it's just some martial art nerds.

I agree, i much prefer urusei yatsura over ranma, not only the ecchi was better and more plentiful on lum on her friends than akane and her friends.

Theoretically Ranma is just the Evolution of Urusei Yatsura, as Rinne is the Evolution of Ranma and so on. Rumiko Takahashi hast a Pool of recurring character sheets, that reappear in esch of her series. They are just adjusted or evolved to the series shes just writing. From that point of view, her best work is always the actual one (in this point it would be Mao). In reality, everyone has a unique taste, a unique opinion. I'm a huge Fan of her series and writings and there is no series I don't like. It's just that in terms of comedy, my Favourite is Urusei Yatsura, since it's so raw, full of great jokes but at the Same time rich of unique parts of japanese history and Folklore.
Ranma has also a special place in my heart, since it's the Anime/Manga that dragged me together with DragonBall into Martial Arts. At the same time it's not only jokes and Martial Arts, but even more full of Folklore and history, but didn't Blog me away as Urusei Yatsura did. Rinne is for me from enjoyability on a similar Spot than Ranma, but has not the Nostalgia thar I have from Ranma as a kid.
With her more serious works, it's very difficult for me to say. I really, really like Inuyasha and Mao nearly the Same, but with Ranma, it's obvious, there's Nostalgia kicking in again. So what Makes a series for someone better or worse, is far depending on what yout tastings are exactly. It's Personal preference and opinion.

And Mendou => Kunou is a huge downgrade. This kendou senpai isn't funny at all. Or the pig guy who's just annoying. The supportive casts beside Shampoo and Happousai are mostly boring.

I like Ranma a lot better - feel like martial arts is a more compelling plot point that “whatever Takahashi feels like drawing that week”

how many episodes do you think it's going to have is it going to have the same amount the original had I hope there's no filler in it that's what I hated about the original they had so much filler and cut out a lot of content

@Romangelo You seriously like the most annoying pervert in ALL of Anime'? No taste sir, no taste. Happosai is the one character I hated in Ranma.

@Romangelo I am not sure if you are referring to the Manga or the original series, but Urusei Yatsura and Ranma are different with some parallels between them and your character swap comparison just doesn't make it justice. And I don't really see how you can say that it is a similar story, when each event/villain and setting is very different from Urusei Yatsura and with a bunch of new characters and different dynamics between each character.
Both stories are unique and just from your comment it seems like you didn't really pay attention to Ranma.

I can't really speak for the (original) anime, since I don't know if it covers everything or is true to the source material to make the distinction.

@Romangelo I’m sorry did you just call Akane boring? I can think of a number of words to describe Akane, but boring would not be one of them. I could honestly care less about Akane‘s hair, but I would say she looks more unique with short hair. Her long hair just made her look average.

If you prefer Urusei Yatsura, then good for you. But personally, I think Ranma 1/2 one of the funniest anime/manga I have ever watched/read. All of the characters have such big personalities and it is always fun seeing them be put into different scenarios or interact with different characters.

I can’t speak on Urusei Yatsura as I have only seen a few episodes of the remake. But Ranma 1/2 help me through some dark times and is also one of the first anime I’ve ever watched

@Yozarou Don't get me wrong. I didn't say Ranma was a bad manga/anime. Just that it wasn't as good as Urusei Yatsura that predated it.

And the core reason is Akane. She wasn't a good lead heroine, even if you don't compare her to Lum, she's probably worse than most of the other girls on her own show. Hell, even female Ranma is a better girl than Akane.

Disagree. I tried UY, but I could not keep on with it. Never felt in it the same funny/lovely charm that hooks you in from the very beginning that Ranma did have.

Best way to enjoy Urusei Yatsura is to read the manga. It has all the jokes and edgy stuff. But both versions of anime were good as well, just not as great as the manga.
