The final fight to decide Kafka's life.

Up to now I could take this generic shounen troupes, but fuck dude this whole inner demon and I have to overcome but I can't, but oh wait my friends are always waiting for me troupe is so overdone that I honestly batted an eye at the whole scene. Then THE MOST SHOUNEN LINE EVER "Im NoT kAijU nO8, iM kAfkA hIbiNO"... ffs.

I mean those dudes at the roundtable had a point, he used his kaiju powers no doubt about it and if he didn't use them he wouldn't have made it lmao. I'm with the dudes on the roundtable this time. But Isao also has a point, the only way to beat a kaiju, is with a kaiju. Because if it wasn't for Kafka, ALL the Third Division would be dead lol. So now all he has to do is prove his worth... yay everything resolved. Then we have our main villain over here playing chess. Great lol.

Kaiju No.9 will continue to make his move, while Kafka, Kaiju No.8, will prove his worth and defeat him all in the hope of getting Mina's attention.

Literal definition of carried by animation, and hey, if they keep that up in the new sequel as we go into the bad parts of this show, then I'm all for it.

So shinomiya's father was testing kafka's ability all along. For a second we thought he's going to die.
A victory he kafka won for himself.

Same old troupe of heroine screaming at the top of their lungs(Kikoru in this case) and the main guy somehow making it out from some battle with himself. Of course, Kafka didn’t kill Isao, would not have made any sense whatsoever, because the so-called strongest officer dropping dead just after his intro would be a low even for this series. Mina got grilled hard though in that whatever top-management meeting, though yeah, she convinced that one person who needed to be convinced. Wow.

So yeah, they’ll keep Kafka alive, needed for the plot after all. Anyway, a very unoriginal series, always felt this and still feel, add these banal characters to the misery. But hey, the studio did everything they could have, though if the source itself is something, the likes of which we’ve seen a million times already, without even innovating or improving over anything, there’s so much any studio could do. Though the thing is, it doesn’t improve or rather will stay constant with its apathetic premise. But it sells well… really well, for some odd reason, so of course a sequel is coming.

This episode was fairly decent, It ended with a spectacle and I was not let down. However, the story itself does lack a lot along with the characters.

Kafka's interrogation by Kikoru's father Isao, evolving into Kaiju No. 8 to face the developed body of Kaiju No. 2, the latter may have bargained more than he could fighting against someone of a similar caliber by testing against him so that he could give him a fighting chance to stay within the Defense Force. And what transpired is not just a fight between human and monster on Kafka's end, he's already TOO close to be becoming a monster that can't be controlled...and the surprise that he was even able to control No. 8 and not leave Isao being killed, that takes a lot of courage to turn to the human side.

With the interrogation done, the hard questions for the paperwork can commence, and that falls squarely on Mina's part to help testify Kafka's good graces. As stubborn as the council of higher-ups can be to exterminate Kafka fast and swift, she knows Kafka well, and that's had an effort on Isao...to still label him as a monster, but that comes with the upset that Kafka HAS to work to earn back the trust of the Defense Force, since his incredible power can still be used for the good.

For now, Kafka Hibino has his life spared, and Kaiju No. 9's not done with his work interrogating the humans...he will come back with revenge.

Unsurprising that Kaiju No. 8 has a sequel in the works, this show is just too popular not to warrant a continuation.

It was a very predictable direction with what would happen, reminiscent of stuff I've seen with Attack on Titan or Kabaneri in a way where the MC is a hybrid that's working as a weapon for the humans against other kaiju as long as there's enough humanity in them to maintain themselves. I liked some of the additions with Mina's brief speech but I just wish her characterization stood out a lot more beforehand to make her interactions feel more meaningful. If I have to give credit to one thing, I did diss Production I.G in the earlier episodes for this being one of the weaker animated shows I've seen from them in some time but they turned up with the last few episodes here, it was good. The episode was not bad but just too stretched out for something predictable with the stakes and tension with the payoff not being quite there.

Overall, this was just another battle shounen in the books, probably more boring and uninspired plot-wise than I've seen compared to some of the last few big battle shounen anime I've seen, probably since Black Clover. Characters looked wonky for the most part (especially Kikoru) and were way too one-dimensional and boring, lack of real tension and excitement present with the anime not even showing random officers suffering to make the kaiju look threatening compared to what Attack on Titan did and overall, the show feels very interchangeable with a lot of others. Kafka's an older protagonist that acts like a kid so watching him hasn't been fun either, nor did his characterization make me care for what happened to him in the last two episodes (not like anything surprising would have happened with the outcome). I can understand if people enjoy the show for what it is but there's just not much for me to latch on to that I would remember for a long time with this series sadly. And now there's a sequel soon that would continue its boring, overly predictable and cliche plot direction and characterization but that wasn't a surprise whatsoever.

This had 'setting up for another season' all written over it especially towards the end.

At least Kafka survived this (yeah, ofc he wouldn't die in the finale by any means) and Mina believes in him. Honestly, this final episode felt more like a psychological thriller than the usual shouenn action. Great that this anime got a high production so I assume they'll take their time to craft the next season.

Waiting game begins for release window.

It's almost painful, how a series can be this generic. Not much different from all those isekai that released every season with the same plot. Almost feels like this series is released 10-20 years too late lol.

It was definitely my fault too, for getting hype for this anime before released, just because of the popularity of the manga.

One of the most average written shounen, I have seen so far. Where the author is just following the predicable route, using lame troups to attract the mainstream fans. This series also has one of the most cringeist comedy, I have ever seen.

Gimme that season 2 asap. This was the best thing I’ve seen from jump since Jigokuraku. As a big Toku/Godzilla fan I loved it.

This was a “2nd season is imminent and this is just a set up” finale if I’ve ever seen one lol. The Kafka and Shinomiya fight was fire, ended up being a little generic in the end but it’s cool. Isao not as bad as I thought. Last week I ripped on him for being this universe’s Thunderbolt Ross, but I guess he did take Kikoru’s plea to heart and gave Kafka a chance to prove himself.

Fitting that in the end, it’s Mina or at least Kafka’s mental perception of her, that keeps him on the right path and snapped him back in control. She’s been his guiding light ever since they were kids.

“We dont want to hear your personal opinion” ok so why tf did you invite her if you don’t want her to sit down at the table or give her actual insight as someone who lives and works with the dude on a daily basis lmao.

The general staff old heads had no intention of even hearing her out, good thing Isao has a brain. You really think you can continue fighting these Kaiju with the same methods as they get stronger and stronger? PLUS Isao is literally using Kaiju 2’s abilities so all that “precedent” shit is stupid πŸ’€

Don’t really matter whether they officially designate him as Kaiju or Human, long as my boy is alive and allowed to continue serving alongside Mina and the others we good. It’s been a very eventful last few months for everyone in the division and now that the cat’s out the bag with Kafka, can’t wait to see where things go from here.

Kaiju number 9 claims he’s got human intelligence figured out, but in traditional shonen villain form, he’s forgetting that’s not the most important thing humans have on their side. It’s their hearts. Hype for s2

Final episode! What a great spring season with Kafka-kun and others. My favorite manga and anime are both great. Studio I.G really adapted it very well.

And I watched it every week for 3 months live on twitter same time in Japan. Damn it was really convenient because it has official subtitles. I'm happy that they partnered with twitter.

Also 2nd season in production officially announced!! Looking forward!!

Sure, this resolution has been done countless times before in other series, but I still found it good. Idk, I'm relatively easy to please now, I've moved beyond that pretentious phase of my anime watching life that I still see a lot of all over MAL and *shocker* in this thread where I crucify any work that showcases even the slightest shred of predictability, using common tropes/cliches, or being generic (which MAL continues to think generic = automatically bad lmao). I'm watching this stuff to be entertained, if it entertains me then it did its job. I can't be bothered to care about originality (esp. since nothing is 100% original anymore anyway) or feed into MAL's played out hate boner for anything shounen.

Anywho, the finale came out swinging as the fight between an out-of-control Kafka and Shinomiya continued. Once again, so much craziness and the animators put their whole backs into this one. Some good stuff, as expected from Production IG. As most of us figured, Kafka got let off the hook but he doesn't seem to be entirely in the clear just yet. Most of the higher ups naturally still don't trust him after all. Glad to see Mina vouching for him and all of his squadmates happy about his return though, Kafka has some good people in his corner. And of course, there's No. 9 still scheming and plotting. A pretty good season overall, that went out with a bang, and I'm looking forward to what the 2nd season has to offer.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

This is basically solo levelling of this season. Where only people who watch it for mindless action and good animation enjoy it. Writing doesn't matter because it is probably one of the most generic and predictable battle shounen.

This is one of the most basic level writing I have seen in anime and manga. It almost feels like the writer was not even trying. But just because the art and fight are good, it sells well.

I'm already catch upto latest chapter of the manga. It is still generic and predictable, it's get even worse later. So any hope of series turning good, or suddenly becoming completely different from it's previous season is loss.

Berserk Kaiju 8 fight was hype, that spin attack damn. Kafka finally came back after remembering Mina's promise to wait for him. Loved how Kikoru kept cheering for him, great girl. Loved hearing what Mina had to say about Kafka. Kafka avoided getting killed, his comrades were sure happy to hear the news.

Cool adaptation of the manga. Some things could have been better but overall pretty satisfied. Looking forward to s2.

The day of judgement for Hibino Kafka. Guys back in Team 3 are fidgety, and Mina is summoned to HQ. They’re treating her badly, stopping her from sitting while she waits. I hate the guy who made such a decision.

Kafka, losing control to the kaiju inside, fights Isao. As the match escalates, Kafka tries to regain control, but soon his low self-confidence makes him give up.

Isao also says that he lost hope. Which means he had hope that Kafka might regain control, even in an adverse situation, and become a weapon for humanity.

Finally, few words of Mina brought back Kafka from his own abyss. Narumi aims his weapon at a fainted Kafka.

Isao hasn’t died, which is a good thing. I’m liking him, especially after the meeting with all those other higher ups and Mina. He seemed to have made the decision beforehand and just wanted some affirmation.

As expected, everyone wants Kafka to prove his worth as a living Kaiju fighting for the humanity. Elsewhere, Kaiju No. 9 wants to take back No. 8 for themselves. Typical climax, but as long as it keeps me interested, sure why not.

Our boi won the battle. Now itz time to win the war by provin' his worth. At last Narumi joined the chat. My man's badass as always in word mode. Didn't expect they'd make his hair purplish. Whatever still lookin' great. Mc fightin' for his dream, childhood friend comin' to strengthen his determination and at last "I'm not Kaiju no. 8, I'm Hibino Kafka"...a definite ideal shounen ep splendidly done.

I started the manga after watching some episode of the anime to see if it's gets better. As there are many series with weak or generic start, but get's really good but after some time.

I was mainly watching it to see the fights animated. Since, I was only watching 1 ep every week, so it was not that big of a problem. I would have dropped it, If I was binging it after the season ends.

The episode starts with Reno motivated to become stronger for faith in Kafka's return and near the endof the episode, Kikoru is motivated to become stronger in case she really has to defeat him one day.

Seeing Kaiju No. 8 pull that self-destructive twist in animation really hits. Not to mention discarding his body to regenerate everything from his core.
Kafka fights the legacy of Kaiju No. 2 in Isao and his weapon whilst fighting his own internal battle, culminating in being (ironically) swallowed by the larva. His vision of Mina rescuing him is extended back a bit as he first imagines past Mina before the present one who says she'll always be waiting.

Gen Narumi is here! Urgh, hope season 2 gets a better character designer.

As much as the top brass soften their plan to make a weapon out of Kafka's body by telling Mina Ashiro up front what she says won't change their decision, it's still just salt in the wounds for 3rd division having he who saved the lives of his teammates, until Isao himself overturns it.

Stay tuned for S2.

Kafka's berserk kaiju form is terrifying. The fight with General Shinomiya wasn't even close. But I bet he can get bigger and stronger.

So, Kafka will now become a living weapon for the Defense Force. About what I expected to happen. Hope he'll prove to them that he's a human soon.

Man, Kaiju No. 8 was a very fun anime. Sure, it has many of the usual shonen tropes. But it didn't try hard to be something that it wasn't. I liked how it was just straight-up a good anime. The characters are fun, the action is great and the animation and OST are also great. But not really anything groundbreaking. But I still loved watching it every week. My favorite character is probably Kafka himself.

I'm glad a sequel was announced. Probably will be a while before it releases, unfortunately. Can't wait to see it.

You know an episode will be epic when the main character's name is the episode title.

If Kafka failed 12 times, what was the age limit before the Defense Force raised it? Since a lot of the recruits have school-aged memories of Captain Ashido, I figured the age limit was like 23 or sthg, so even the two older recruits (stoic blond guy and turquoise-haired rich guy) are still in their early 20s. It also gives more time to how long Kafka kinda just existed in limbo in his cleaner role, no longer able to apply. But if the Defense Force exam takes place every year and Kafka applied 12 times since finishing high school, that'd mean the original age limit was 29-30 — so Kafka would still be the oldest among the recruits but not by that much. :P

Amazing anime from start to finish. Despite it being pretty cliché it was done really well and had a lot of heart, the fights, animation, music were all on point, and the characters were likeable. It turned out to be way better than I could have ever expected.

I hear that after S1 the manga falls off hard. I hope the anime sequel can be just as good as this season was.
