It's kind of really weird that this episode is kind of a better second attempt at the sort of plot they did way back in episode 9 (which I think was a pretty weak episode) and they somehow fixed it by making it a Kinta and Chie episode. Not only that, but it's probably the best Kinta and Chie episode so far.

It seems to be something of a general consensus that Kinta and Chie are part of the reason Combattler V is worse after the Garuda arc. But this episode shows that really didn't have to be the case. When the writers get ideas for them, they're as good as anything. It's just that they seem to have been introduced before the writers had enough ideas...

But a notable thing: Kinta and Chie are mostly written for drama instead of comedy here. I keep mentally comparing Kerot to Boss Borot from Mazinger since they're both the useless sidekick comedy mecha. But Boss Borot has worked in almost everything I've ever seen him in and Kerot hasn't. But Boss Borot has the advantage of being piloted by an arrogant blowhard character— it's inherently funny to see him taken down a peg, he's practically asking for it. Kinta and Chie on the other hand are just wacky kids. It's not as inherently funny to see their mech mess up, or to see them save the day by accident. But their status as kids works with the horror of what the Campbellians are doing here, and they're only just wacky enough to prevent it from being a really grim episode.

Maybe the writers figured out it's better to emphasize the "relief" part of "comedy relief" with them, since, oftentimes, their core problem is they'll be used to prop up a comedy episode when they just plain don't bring enough jokes to the table.
