Wow such a long time i've ever heard that narrator saying "dungeon meshi ah dungeon meshi."

I thought they might try barging in the Living Painting altogether. Guess its just a sole experience for Laios, and its sure an eccentric one with that one self-realization elf.

Mimic and Chilchuck. Weird combination. But they can make such a good scene, and also a delicious cuisine as well.

Ah dungeon meshi dungeon meshi

1. Laios is less of an adventurer and more of a scientist at this point really.... A mad scientist....
2. THAT'S GENIUS! A genius way of exposing background or the world's history using living paintings!
3. Who's here shipping Chillchuck with Marciella!? Woowoo.... I always thought of Laios x Marciella, but this EP alone change my standing.

Today's episode is probably the weakest of them all.

Whole Part A being centered in living pictures was pretty worthless because from the beginning we already expected dumb Laios' plan to get food would not work. The characters introduced may or may not be relevant later on, so until we get to that point they are worthless so far.

Part B was almost as pointless. They relay on "dumb luck" to get their dinner, despite rabid fanboys claiming that they are veterans and they are smart adventurers, but their trap guy falls for the most common floor traps (makes me even more convinced that them losing the food cart in the previous expedition was Chilchuck's fault).

6 episodes gone, and that's a quarter of run time of this episodic nothing burger.
@Kimurah You seem to be missing the point of the story.

Laios entering the paintings reminded me of Super Mario 64 as others have mentioned and it was too bad that he couldn't bring the food back.

The 2nd part focused on Chilchuck and I didn't realize that he's a halfling like a hobbit as I thought he was just a short human guy lol. So Laios is the only human in the group until they eventually rescue his sister which who knows when that will happen.

Those paintings were just the opposite of A Nightmare on Elm Street: whatever happens inside them, does not carry over to the real world. What a pity after such a good meal.

It was good to have a second part centered on Chilchuck. He lived the Frieren experience.

Now I have to wonder if entering the paintings it becomes apart of history or if it's an entirely separate world that is a copy of the history of theirs. Also nice way to get to taste different foods, so long as you dont get caught.

Chilchuck almost became kabobchuck.

Hah I knew nothing good will come out of eating or taking food from painting. Isn't that girl from the OP scenes ass well?

It wasn't an actual mimic but the other one. LOL So mimic looks partly and taste like crabs eh?

Greta episode usual Laios is so unhinged seeing a painting monster and immediately thinking “how can I say the food in the painting” that man is such a weirdo when it comes to food🤣🤣🤣

I liked how the second half of this episode focused on Chilchuck, it was funny seeing him think back about the times he got caught lacking by mimics LMAO and the animation when Chilchuck was running away from the Mimic was so fucking amazing they kept solid consistent animation for like a good 2-3 minutes when that mimic was chasing bro😩🔥

Yo why was Mercille looking kinda…👀 idk why but I think it’s the way her long hair was drawn on her something, it’s funny bc I’ve never looked at Mercille in anyway since this show started😭😣😣😣😣😣

The paintings were telling a story as things progressed, and it was funny that the elf actually noticed an outsider around at each significant event!

Chilchuck should have been eating the hell out of the Mimic just for revenge! The lore about the treasure insect laying their eggs inside a mimic then the larvae consuming the mimic to grow into gold coins, that's genius storytelling right there.

Those paintings as a food resource would be an unfathomable godsend for bulimics. All the freedom of gorging and feasting without any of the need for the violent vomiting. All binge and no purge, no calories, and no weight gain.

The only thing I wonder is if the food is replenished upon each visit or each different person's visit (if entering at separate times) or what. Or for that matter, if anything else affected is replenished, fixed, etc. Is the entire painting scene just fully automatically reset?

I love that the world building of this show is pretty deep. We get to learn about the ecosystem of these dungeon monsters, like the fact that coin bugs eat mimics from the inside as they multiply and then look like a bunch of gold coins in a chest to any passing adventurer. Everything has evolved to deceive / kill adventurers, and it’s super cool learning about everything. (7.5/10)

This show is such a pleasant surprise. I've read some of the manga and Trigger truly did a great job not letting it fall flat as a formulaic, cooking anime. It's got action and comedy on a fantasy setting, great animation and art. Production has also paid attention to the OST. This is the type of anime you wanna wake up early on a Sunday and watch. I'm eager for more.

Ahh I love Laios's open-mindedness with painting food, I also would've been interested in trying it! I also really liked the mini story in the paintings with the prince growing up, getting married, and becoming king. Scary how Laios got busted by the elf tho—always have an escape plan ^^

The Chilchuck-focused half was also great, but wouldn't heating up the picking tools change their shape and hinder their use later??

"Should I call you sir?" XD

Tbf I thought Chilchuck was like 12 :P
@ApocalypSnow

Funny enough if I remember correctly he was married and/or had first child when he was 12.... because his race lifespan on average is 50 years.

This episode took me like 45 minutes to an hour to finish. On account of how much I paused every couple of seconds to admire a frame, or rewinded to rewatch a scene—over and over again. Definitely one of my favorite animations of this season. Definitely one of my favorite art styles—possibly of all time. As someone who's been watching anime since 2015, this very well might become one of my favorite anime of all time.

Also, Laois is becoming a funnier character with each episode; and it's great to see Chilchuk get the spotlight in this episode. The entire scene of him trying to escape from one room felt like it lasted forever, in the best way possible.

Dungeon Meshi Episode 6

  • An episode dedicated to our boy Chilchuk, he's fear of mimics, and him being 29 years old.
  • We saw some hints of the history of the castle and the people that once lived and reigned there.
  • Curious about that elf in the painting. I think I also saw her in the OP.
  • Overall, another great episode.

The most wholesome, peaceful, fun, moments I can think of come from this show and great character writing for a fantasy perspective as it talks about eating the monsters its building the world around it, and somehow keeping it interesting enough to yeah know, make you want to try the cooking... I doubt it would be any good but still, if frieren didn't come out AT ALL this show would have won my heart for such an amazingly well written show. I got say I am EATING GOOD for the past few months... (in terms of content consumption) I am going to be sad when their wont be a s2 because of netflix or what have you. Looking for word to talk in depth about this show and hopeful consume more fantasy anime content

Now 25% of the way. This episode is hilarious.

First, Laios wasted his and everyone else's time trying to eat food from paintings.

Then, Chilchuck had a great time being trapped and unintentionally catching a mimic, which they cooked as though it's a crab.

It's fun, and it looks like I got a hang of these characters which back in episode 1 were dull.

Please tell me I was not the only one that noticed the - probably most subtle ever - reference to Ashita no Joe in the scene where Laios is in the chair.

I'm sure this was intentional, Trigger already *directly* referenced Ashita no Joe in at least two other anime, and the chair scene is one of the most referenced anime/manga scenes of all time.

And I believe there may also have been a reference to Steins;Gate on this scene. At least, it immediately reminded me of it.

By the way, I'm loving this anime, it's sooo good, what a wonderful surprise it was <3

Advantages:
The world of painting is clearly the history of the Golden Village in the past, and it is clearly directly related to the Mad Wizard and Maze. Using this technique to connect the protagonist group with the background story and the true main line is my favorite creativity to this day. It is much more clever than telling boring historical stories directly
The idea of treasure bugs multiplying through eating treasure box monsters quickly replaced the previous one as my favorite idea, which is logically perfectly matched and unexpected
The painting of the Treasure Box Monster is very impactful
Marcille's drowsy expression and voice acting are very accurate. In Chillchuk's imagination, the sleeping appearance is also very cute, but the cutest thing is still the appearance of the Treasure Box Eating Monster
Chill's age is also a very interesting scene, an uncle who looks like a child, older than Laios but younger than Marcille and Senshi

These paintings are basically Mario 64 dungeon edition, but too bad he can't pick things inside and even though he eats the food inside the painting his stomach is empty when he leaves it.
Poor Chilchuck he had a rough time with the traps and fake chest, in the end they ended up eating one and that's basically eating a crab, looked tasty tbh.
