Not sure how well it adapts the novels, also the art style looks better here compared to that of the anime, making the anime's art style look "cartoony" compared to this.

Is this a loose adaptation?

I would say so far (read upto vol.5 of the manga and on the "final season" of the novels) that it more or less follows the anime's interpretation. The novels is very heavy conversation based to the point it rambles on (in a good way) so a fair chunk of that dynamic gets cut out in any sort of Anime/Manga adaption. The anime incorporated some of this with it "flash cards" as I put it, in order to hold watchers attention without taking too long.

That being said early monogatari has shorter conversations so it's hard to say that much is getting reduced and I'm a unreliable narrator as the gaps between reading/watching each source st the same part of the series is big (years even).

But if you enjoyed the Anime you will enjoy this. But the Novels give room for more just by the nature of being Novels.
