I don't understand why so many people hate on Gabi. I think that she's as good of a character as Eren. What other 12 - 15 year old would perform crazy stunts on the battlefield without hesitation and manage to kill so many enemies. Even Eren doesn't have as many achievements when fighting as a child other than the couple of kidnappers he killed. And what's most impressive is that she is not even a shifter.

Does that even make her a well written character?

I’m on your side. In the end she was a girl defending her hometown, that’s why she shot Sasha. She had every right to be angry. She also had a great character development when she realized that the paradisers are not monsters but people just like the ones from outside the walls. Sadly there’s people who who will simply hate on a character for the sake of hating, without even trying to understand the reasoning and motives behind a character.

I mean I think that she's well written. Her act of killing Sasha was just her exacting revenge on the people who come to invade and destroy their city. If Eren is well written when he saved Mikasa, then this is a parallel that's just as good.

Pretty apathetic towards her as a person, but she's arguably one of the show's best written characters that actually has a distinct character arc.

I love Gabi's character writing and her parallels to kid Eren but I still hate HER as a person.

If the entire show had followed her as the MC and then in S4 this random character say Connie or someone who I would've only met a few episodes ago shot Falco, I would hate Connie.

That is a fair reason to hate a character. But from my perspective, I love a good villain. (That's why Dio is my favorite character) And someone has to take the role on at some point. Just like Eren in the finale.

I never hated her for anything she did in the story. Personally her sheer arrogance and propensity towards violence annoyed me a little, but her development felt far too rushed. She basically transformed her entire world view within the span of like 1 day and there wasn’t a strong catalyst for this change. She was trying to brag to Niccolo abt her killing an eldian, then in her next scene she was saying they were just like the island devils. I don’t mind the idea of her character but imo the execution wasn’t great and was a little rushed

Gabi and Falco are meant to serve as a parallel to Eren and Mikasa. Two characters that corrected their flaws, and had the happy ending that Eren and Mikasa didn’t have. Gabi had an active role in the story as she rushed in head first ahead of everyone while also trying avenge her falling friends identically to Eren. Gabi didn’t wanna hear it from anyone about how she was misled or how good the people of paradis were and while we the audience knows and sees her behavior as annoying, she did separate from Eren’s path thanks to Sasha’s father. His kindness and forgiveness got through to Gabi… she got off the hate train and switched from an active role to a reactionary role. Gabi saved Kaya from the Titan that was after her just like Sasha did in season 2 episode 2… she authentically and genuinely apologize to her, revealed her flaw as a person (how she only cared about the admiration of others) and declared that she was the true devil not the people of paradis.

Falco’s role was more like Mikasa… she followed around Gabi and even protects her and feels that he should be a Titan not her… but he didn’t know how to convey his feelings for her. Just like how Gabi split apart from Eren’s path… so did Falco split from Mikasa’s path. After Gabi realized how terrible she’s been and misled, she tells him and colt that she’s the real devil… and this inspired Falco to confess his feelings for her (something Mikasa didn’t do until the very end.)

Now the elephant in the room. Us the viewers… Attack on Titan is all about a circle of hatred (similar to Naruto’s theme) and we the viewers are apart of this. We feel how the characters feel. Sasha was part of the story since the beginning and her death by the hands of Gabi, get to us emotionally in a way that we can’t logically think that the person who really killed Sasha was Eren. Sasha killed people that Gabi cared about just like Eren and the rest of the people of Paradis. Gabi wasn’t there in the basement with Reiner and Eren… she don’t carry that guilt like Falco has been. Just like Falco was up there and watched all of his friends die right in front of him. So we the audience get this mix feeling of Gabi being extremely annoying as her was as 12 year old behaving as she was taught while also not hearing anything “devils” have to say especially as she saw with her own two eyes how evil they are prior to her coming to paradis.

In closing, a lot of people wish Gabi would die in the end but she didn’t and I’m glad she didn’t. Gabi is the ONLY character that authentically had a character redemption in the series. Unlike Reiner, Bert, and Annie… she spent just a brief time with the people of Paradis to see the truth. Unfortunately for the original traitorous trio, they didn’t get a true redemption story but they did grow as a character. Gabi and Falco had a happy ending, and had an ending that Eren and Mikasa could have had if they corrected their flaws as characters before it was too late.

Well lol you did gloss over the reason why Gabi changed. Cough* Sasha’s father cough* Kaya tries to kill Gabi cough* Mikasa saves Gabi from Kaya cough* Falco steps ups and confessed his feelings for Gabi cough* god damn I’m hacking up a lung! Hahahaha

that's like praising the brainwashed 15yrs old nazi soldier for getting kills on ww2.
no Gabi deserved the hate she got for killing sasha and falling into the lies Marley groomed on her, she later had a redemption when she opened her eyes and statted thinking critically but then she went from hate target to neutral, still not praiseworthy.

Well 1st of all she’s 12, and is shown to be one of the smartest and strongest characters in the series. But she’s also very compassionate and emotional… no matter what people say… she watched people close to her die right in front of her. She saw Sasha gun down people she called comrades, the in-story reason Gabi changed was because of Sasha’s father forgiving her even after she killed his daughter. But the Real reason she changed… was to show what would happen if Eren got off the hate train. Gabi and Falco were parallels to Eren and Mikasa. Mikasa never confessed her feelings until it was too late… falco chased Gabi around and swore to protect her and confessed his feelings. Eren was dead set on vengeance… and never let off… and seeing future events didn’t help either. He was trapped…and couldn’t do what Gabi did. Not because he was too weak or dumb…but because of a character flaw he never resolved.

What’s even funnier is ask who Gross. Just ask a fan what do you think of Gross. Who’s he?? Gross was the soldier who killed Grisha’s sister. Now ask Gabi… she’s the 7th most favorited character in AoT. She’s more popular than Sasha. But I guarantee if there was a hate button… she’ll be up there with the worst of the worst. Gabi watched her friends die right in front of her and retaliated. Then ends up redeeming herself… what other character did that??? Feed a child to dogs… no one cares… kill potato girl absolutely everyone lose their minds. It reminds me of what the Joker was saying in the Dark knight to Harvey Dent. The author is a genius.

If you treat Faze Gabi as a meme(as she should be) then all is good, but as a character, her peak for me, was that moment where she realized that there are no "devils" and that she was just nonchalantly playing her part in the cycle of hatred. After that, she just got sidelined writing-wise so I don't really care for her either way.

Well you gotta remember that there were two characters with active roles when paradis attacked Marley. It was Eren and Gabi. They had parallel roles… when she did have her “there are no devils…I’m the real devil” moment it was a character shift. She’s no longer active… she’s reactive. Reacting to the environment instead of directly interfering with the environment like she was in the beginning of the arc. This is where eren and Gabi’s parallels split off. Because Eren didn’t do what Gabi just did. Because Gabi resolved her character flaws and Eren did not. Gabi and Falco’s happy ending was the happy ending that could have been for Eren and Mikasa if he (actually Mikasa too since unlike falco, never confessed her feelings) resolved his character flaws.

People hate on her for literally one reason - she killed fan favourite comic relief character. That's it.
Despite that, her character arc and development were absolutely beautiful.
If story would start from Final Series, without any prior knowledge of context it Eren would be hated, not her, because she was basically an equivalent of Eren from the beginning.
The only problem is that she committed perfidy when we first saw her, but whatever.

i honestly think she’s a really well written character and her and falco work as a very well done parallel to eren and mikasa. and she has a very distinct character arc, i think. plus, she’s just a kid. she’s just a child. she’s not going to be the height of rationality and logic, even if she is the smartest & most highly skilled of her peers.

She’s 12 and shown more logic than people older than her. Don’t forget Reiner, Annie, and Bert spent years in paradis and still kept their prejudices. Lastly, with her own eyes she saw her friends die right in front of her… no other character in an active role would watch their friends and people get massacred and remain 100% calm and rational. Sasha was gonna die regardless. But Sasha’s father did get through to Gabi for her to see the world more clearly. And saw how Kaya was gonna kill Gabi just like how Gabi killed Sasha for the death of her friends. Age has absolutely nothing to do with Gabi. She’s the only character in the series to have a redemption arc.

that’s my point. is noone would remain calm and rational after watching their friends die. i see most of the dislike about gabi being in regards to killing sasha & i think its unfair to hate her for it when she’s obviously not going to have rational and logical responses to high stress, high emotion situations. my point is that shes also a child, and season 4 showcases that very well (e.g. the festival). i don’t agree that her age isn’t relevant, i personally think it is, because she does have typical kid moments before the attack on the internment zone.
i agree she was the one who got a redemption arc. i said i felt like she had a very distinct character arc. i like gabi. i think she’s very well written. i think that a lot of her reaction to everything that happens is indicative of her environment & her age, & i can’t demonise her for those things.

What I mean is that there are characters older and more mature have far less poignant self reflection moments than Gabi, what I mean her age being irrelevant I meant in regards to her character development. Both Gabi and Falco correct their own character flaws, unlike their parallels Eren and Mikasa whom displayed more maturity and logical decision-making despite being more naive than even Gabi or Falco by the end of their character journey. Viewers dislike of Gabi… and being told that’s she’s just a kid won’t get through to viewers. The author wrote Gabi in a way to expose and showcase that viewers are just as emotional and prejudice as the characters we criticize in the series.

i feel like you think im disagreeing with you but i’m not? (edit: if im wrong on this then my apologies i might just be misinterpreting) i agree with you. im simply talking about my own interpretation of her character. i agree that she wasn’t written in a way that makes her age the specific conversational point of her character arc, but i do also feel like the s4 pt1 made the point of reminding the viewer that they’re just children (gabi, falco, udo, sophia). and its easy for viewers to hold child characters to adult standards when they’re having reactions proportional to their circumstance.
her character arc is really poignant, i agree. i’m not denying that. im only talking abt my own personal interpretation of her character & how ive seen other people react to her because of her behaviour.

Eh, there’s a difference between acting to save someone and throwing your life away just to kill aimlessly for revenge. Gabi is arguably more stupid than kid Eren.

Eh… I’m not seeing the link in this comparison. What issues did Eren have as a kid that Gabi had? He hated Titans — as actual monsters that oppressed people — while Gabi hated Eldians that did nothing to her or her people … very different things. It also seemed to me that Eren genuinely understood the gravity of the sin he was committing in the end, and he did it anyway … because he just has violent tendencies?

Nah, the real issue is that he’s a f***ing idiot … to use his own words. Gabi committed the sin before she knew better because she was a kid that’s easily manipulated. That makes sense.

It’s not my opinion the parallels between Gabi/Falco and Eren/Mikasa… but rather a fact from the author. Just like how the point of view of the story flipped to the perspective of the Marleyans. You made one grave error with your rebuttal. You said, Gabi had no reason to hate the Eldians. But you’re wrong… and you know you’re wrong. Because in Gabi’s own eyes she saw Eren attack and kill her friends and comrades. Proving exactly the brainwashing rhetoric Willy Tybur was spewing. Then she saw the people of paradis gun down people she cared about… very similar to what Eren seen and his reaction to that very vengeance parallels Gabi. And just like how Mikasa chases after Eren who loves him and wants to protect him… so does Falco chase after Gabi who wants to protect her and loves her. I’m sorry. This isn’t really up to debate… it just is 1 + 1 = 2, the sky is blue, and Gabi/Falco parallels Eren/Mikasa and the difference between the two pairs is how one gets the ‘good’ ending and the other gets the ‘bad’ ending.

I think I'm warming up a bit to gabis character but i dont think your reasons are convincing. She is def kid eren but way more annoying but i think her character can make ppl understand the attack on marley circling to the attack on eldians and her warming up to eldians was a good character arc but she's also an aimbot which sucks. I'd say she's a good character for showing a perspective but shes boring and annoying at the same time for me.
Also her shooting floch sucks, he shouldve hit the boat dammit!

And what's most impressive is that she is not even a shifter.

your explanation doesnt prove why shes a well written character. just because a character is strong and has many achievement doesnt make them well written. character can be weak but is still well written.
i agree that shes well written but i still hate her

Because too many people in anime/shonen/internet community just aren’t capable of even slightly complex thought. It’s one thing to say you don’t like gabi bc she took away Sasha, that’s completely valid, but so many people miss her writing, purpose or the fact that she’s literally eren but on the other side and the themes and story isayama tries to with her.

Yeah she's probably a top 3 character in the show for me, at no point did I hate her really although I of course understand that

She killed sasha, that is enough of a reason to hate her. We should hate the author more tbh.

I think we should praise an author that's brave enough and objective enough to kill off his own characters.

Yeah but she was raised and trained to be a fighter, she’s strong and tactful but ultimately groomed to be a potential inheritor. She’s mad annoying but a good example of what someone who was taught to hate looks like.

I think she’s so hated because of how aggressive she is with the harmful beliefs she was taught. But she’s just a naive kid and objectively we as viewers know what’s going on and watching her naïveté is frustrating because we humans always judge and insist others should know better, know what we know but it’s unrealistic.

I still don’t like her but she represents something bigger, a problematic racist attitude. We’re not supposed to like her, she’s supposed to stir something in us (atleast that’s how I see it).

However she did grow as a character and it’s somewhat satisfying.

I LOVE her, shes my favorite character just below erwin in AOT. i love the parallel to eren. even when she shot sasha i completely understand both sides of the coin. her character is well written, we could completely understand her motives.

although i think the marley arc is a little bit too short. maybe if isayama could make it longer, people would care for the characters a little bit more. maybe show us the technologies they have, or introduce some of the military higher ups whos gonna be killed by eren after the festival.

Absolutely agree, I’m a massive fan of Mahito, he’s such a well written villain I can’t help but love him!
As for Gabi, she was a brainwashed kid doing what she thought was the right thing, and, she came good in the end!

Well hold on there, Gabi’s reason for hating Eldians is not the same. There is no complications or moral ambiguity in hating monsters that eat people. For Gabi, she hated people that did nothing to her (before the Marley attack of course). I do understand the author wanted this comparison and I saw it in the show. But in reality, it’s not the exact same as I’ve seen people portray it in the forums.

Gabi’s transition is understandable and more impactful thematically. Eren’s is unfathomably stupid. Eren was never really discriminatory or manipulated in a way that shaped his view of people incorrectly. And he ended up committing genocide after finding the people on the outside were as innocent as those in paradis. Eren’s path is not similar to Gabi’s in the meaningful way that has been portrayed to me. Their personalities are very similar and they both are driven to fight for revenge from a young age and from similar events. And this is good for showing irony in Eren’s actions when thinking back on what he went through … but not much more beyond that.

So you’re right, the comparison is there. But the meaningfulness of it … well, I’d say there’s nothing there for the eventual paths they chose to go down. Doesn’t really matter what the author intended, it isn’t there. If he wanted it to be more meaningful, he should have thought of something different for Eren’s part in the ending.
