i wouldn't say he's specifically the older version of him, he's just the type of boy Kyotaro thinks is ideal

This is what I understood:
Well according to MC in his glory days( around middle school) he was an excellent student. His grades were excellent, he had friends, a good social life and he never failed. But everything changed when he failed to get in the excellent highschool where his friends went. Then, you know, him and his friends decided to keep in contact but drifted apart as time passed and then MC grew lonely and sad.

The ✌️COOL✌️ looking guy in his imagination is the version of him he believes he would've been if he never failed once in life.

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Imaginary dude is just the guy from the manga Yamada loves, and he said himself he is a representation of Ichikawa's heart. It was just a comedy sketch for Ichikawa to talk with someone and evolve, because the mangaka is smart and knows inner monologues are weak storytelling.
