Literally in the THIRD chapter Japan reached an agreement with a neighbouring country who somehow can supply all the crops and raw materials. and they also gain oil drilling rights. The point is Japan the materials they needed, even though "how" they get those defies logic (cuz this is a fantasy world with dragons and magics after all), to operate their "self-defence force". SO your first point regarding that "Japan have no materials" is invalid. On your second point, Japan certainly have offensive power. the 1840s in our real world saw Britain launched the first opium war. Britain with their 1800s technology dispatched an expeditionary force of around 20000 solders to fight the 100,000 or so Chinese (source:wikipedia), who at that time have the technology of the 1600s. And WON. The most advanced adversary Japan faced in the manga so far have technology equivalent to the Napoleonic era (aka 1800s) so there's about 200 years of technological gap here. Which is about the same with the British and Chinese in the Opium war. Not to mention that in the past 200 years warfare progressed so much that the line infantry charge of Napoleonic era could be easily dispelled by the time of WWI. Not to mention that their first adversaries literally fought with swords and spears. Which every European Nation in the 19th Century (except the Italians) can easily defeated them in our world. As evident in the colonisation of Africa. Benin expedition, for example, saw 1200 British troops dismantled an entire African Kingdom in the span of 9 days. |
