Is there anything really wrong with sticking to the textbook?

The whole plot exists because Handa got criticized by the elderly director for sticking to the textbook in his calligraphy. Though is there really anything wrong with the approach?

It’s been a while since I watched so I don’t remember the plot completely, but I believe that, as it is considered an art form, they wanted him to show something different and unique. Something that would be unique for him so that people would look and see that it is his work.
Maybe I’m being too philosophical but I think that’s what art is. To show other people what are your thoughts and feelings through your art.

There is anything wrong with that, but if you want to create something like "art" you should do something better than just what a textbook says.

Sticking to the textbook means you can write a neat and beautiful piece, but it has no personality if it makes sense.

I think it's comparable to handwriting and computer font, computer font is neat and easy to read, but handwriting has that unique touch that is hard to replicate.

Try doing caligraphy yourself and you'll kinda get it why you shouldn't stick to the basic/textbook as a professional.

I think if you follow the textbook, you have completed your work and you look at it, you can say that you have followed the views of others, you have created what others have determined to be good. It will certainly be good, but it has no individual touch of the creator himself.

There isnt anything really wrong with it when you are learning. Once you are trying to become an established artist, it is best you break free of the mold of textbook style otherwise you start to look lazy or too cookie-cutter and formulaic.

When you stick to the textbook you are following another person's way of performing a task. This works well until you're competing for a higher than average position. When you want to become a specialist you have to be able to contribute something unique to the field.

If you're attempting to gain recognition from an audience you generally have to create works that resonates or grabs at people's attention. Authentic self expression or 'adding one's personality' is one way of doing this, but requires the creator to be open with themselves, vulnerable with their audience, and willingness to freely let creation flow out. The last part is particularly more difficult than one can imagine, you have to let your hands move how they want, to type sentences you find embarrassing, or to allow your hips to swing a certain way in dance.

The safety in following a textbook is our ability to say "I was only following instructions!" When we act freely we have to take responsibility for our moves, which may end up falling flat on the audience. Aahh so embarrassing! The pressure is high whenever we show a part of our true self!
