THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So damn good and so damn short. Wished we got to see more of the other schools' matches. The Straya team seems like a bunch of mad lad and the snow battle seems like it'll be great for shenanigans. Anyway, the Team BC Freedom is pretty fun and it's great to see Chihatan actually not being baka.
Now to wait for yet more years for the 3rd episode.

First of all, Watch the 10 minutes of The Taiyaki Wars gave us some background about what really happened in BC Academy. It had an impact to the first half of the episode.

Second.. It's actually very satisfying to see Chi-Ha-Tan being super badass in this Episode. Fukuda and Nishi are awesome.. the other members are funny too for translated "Charge!" to more type of "Charge!" that actually unnecessary, lol.

Ooarai was also great. under Miho, They changed the Kill(ed) Zone to Kill(s) Zone very quickly. I thought.. This battle was more intense compared to BC.

And yeah.. Another Great Episode I guess.

But honestly, if this is what it takes for Mizushima to direct it and for every episode to be worth the wait, like this one was, I'll gladly accept these long intervals between them. I love GuP. So much that I couldn't help but smile during the entire episode. :)

(Pardon me for the big amount of pictures in this post)

So, am I wrong or did every girl from Ooarai get to say least one line (Saki doesn't count), except for Oryou and Saemonza? I even thought that they didn't even appear in this episode, but after checking for a bit, they did show up very quickly in the small montage after the win against BC Freedom. But that was it. Maybe their voice actresses weren't available? The were in the credits, though. Well, I dunno. Probably just missed them talking. Anyway.

Talking about BC Freedom, man, those first 16 minutes were good! We already start with Andou and Oshida complimenting each other in the only way they can, but thankfully Marie is there to knock them off of it before things go south. Shouldn't even have left them alone tbh, but hey, she's royalty, ain't got no time for those peasants and nobles fighting. By the way, I love how, after Ooarai attacks, she only moves her eyes to the right, but keeps facing the cake. I know it's a small thing, but this episode is full of minor details like that and they show how the crew didn't slack off even for a bit.
Then they resumed their battle in those french fields (yes, I know, they're called bocage, but they're fiels, and they look so french), and honestly, that's such a cool place for a battle! Actually, both battlefields in this episode were cool, the bocage and the jungle. And here starts maybe my favorite sequence of the whole episode: right after the Leopon team do their smol drift, the music stops and, besides the characters talking, we got almost four minutes only with the sounds of tanks rolling, shooting and getting shot at, or hitting each other, and it all sounded simply excellent, really an impeccable job by the sound editing team.
Then another cool and funny sequence, with Marie getting on the tank, stopping the fight and wriggling like that, haha. She showed why she really deserves being leader, putting a stop to the fight between Andou and Oshida immediately. And speaking of her, was I the only one that found her small tank kinda cute between the other bigger ones?
The fight is almost over, but we still get another sequence with great directing and cool use of angles and CGI animation, before BC Freedom starts singing their song and the match finally ends. I loved how Andou and Oshida protected Marie until the end, and the sequence that starts at 16:14, where Ooarai encurralates Marie, shows yet again how impeccable the directing is. I'll never get tired of first-person view angles. And the lesson we get here is that, even during harsh times, never stop eating your cake!
The match is over and BC and Ooarai have a small celebration, and the first part of the episode ends with Marie becoming one of my favorite characters (although I have, like, twenty of them). Just gotta love how calm she always is under every situation, her voice (who's better to voice an ojou-sama than Takane?) and how she has her priorities set straight during battle (btw, forgot say, I also loved the design of the girl on the right).

The second part is small, but still with minor details from the very first second, when they show Sodoko wearing a watch fabricated by... Actas, the studio behind the episode! Also, is anyone kind enough to clarify to me why is the kanji for wind in the place of the number 6? I googled that but to no avail.
I loved Yuuki being smug, and this gag never gets old, I wish they would put it in every episode. Or maybe not, maybe then it wouldn't be funny anymore; but in any case, they even brought out Saki's precious smile!
The turtle team eats at a cafe, and if you replace the last word with something like "show" or "film", this kinda looks like a message from the crew to the viewers, lol.
Miho and Alice visit the Boko museum, some things never change with the bear still getting beaten at every opportunity, but anyways, I've missed her and I'm glad she showed up even if for a small bit.
Fukuda eats with the duck team, and is that Katyusha I see in the poster behind? I wish I knew russian to understand what it says. And was Noriko tossing her food cute! So Chihatan will fight against the Koala Forest High School. That really is a cute name, but honestly... I have no words.
Then we get to see Momo's family, I certainly wasn't expecting that! I'm glad because she's one of my favorite garupans (I mean, from the really favorite ones, not the twenty I said above) along with Saori, Mika, Kinuyo, Maho and Kay. So many siblings and such a cute family. Also, notice how the animators don't economize on giving small actions to every character, like Momo's brother scratching his stomach or Momo pulling her sister up again. This continues in the next scene, with many characters in the screen doing different things at the same time. I love that because it gives such a natural feel to the scene and also shows us a bit of how chaotic is a family with so many children. Again, props to the animators, because in a show with so many action sequences, it would be easy to not give their all in these slice of life bits, but they ended up being superb.
Back at the school, everyone's working and Anzu is doing her best.

And the part three starts with them showing us a glimpse of the battles between other schools. It's a cool scene, with the soundtrack moving on from Kuromorimine's Panzerlied, to Pravda's Katyusha, to Saunders's American Yahoutai March and so on. I kinda expected that the schools that would go on would be the ones we already know, but I wish we could've seen more of other schools. I expected that Kay would beat her tanned and black haired clone El, after all she's the original one, but I still wanted to see more of Aoshidan because of... reasons. Big reasons that come in pair, if you understand me. I sound like a creep.
But hey, at least they showed Éclair, I know who she is now after reading the Maginot manga!
The second round matchups are here, and man! Saunders vs Continuation High School, I love both Kay and Mika a lot, how can I choose just one to root for? Impossible.
Chihatan won and will battle against Ooarai, which is great because I love this charge-minded school full of bakas, especially Kinuyo.
Kuromorimine vs Pravda, a rematch of the semi-final of two years ago, when Pravda won against then Miho's Kuromorimine; and St. Gloriana vs Anzio, I honestly can't see Anzio beat them in any way, Darjeeling is just too stronk. And talking about them, if I recall correctly, St. Gloriana is the only school to have fought against Ooarai (two times, no less) and not lost yet. Will they be the protagonists' final opponent? Between them, Erika's Kuromorimine, and Pravda, I honestly don't know. Really don't expect it to be Pravda, though, and Anzio doesn't even enter the conversation, lol.

It's the day of the match and a lot of people show up to see it! There's the Koala School, some girls from BC Freedom, the main trio from Aoshidan, Éclair, Yukari's parents, Hana's mom and Shinzaburo, Mako's grandma... and even those oji-sans whose shops were wrecked in the original series doing a wave!
Miho, I know you're a sweet and precious cinnamon roll and super polite, but maybe you shouldn't say that...
And like I said above, like the Bocage, the Forest is such a cool place for a battle! It reminded me of the real Amazon Forest, although most jungles probably look the same and they probably used some jungle close to Japan as reference.
The Shark team went down early, time to stop with the cosmetics and use the tank in the proper way. The Hippo team remembers it well, I miss their red tank full of flags. Shark team also has to stop being stubborn and listen to Miho already.
But anyway, Chihatan is doing well with their new different types of charging strategy, Fukuda is a genius for creating that, how can you beat this logic?
Meanwhile, the Mallard team gets stuck in the mud and Sodoko and Pazomi get off to push the tank. Could that even work? Mako comes to their rescue, she had ulterior motives, but Sodoko wasn't having any of that. Also, pretty cool how Sodoko got out of the way and then jumped on the Anglerfish's team tank. Also, please never change, Rabbit team.
Then lots of stuff happen after this: Chihatan singing, Hana being adorable while sleeping with her mouth open, Mako being a night owl, some legit sp00ky stuff (Gomoyo was so adorable though, haha), Kinuyo saying "TOKKAN!" (I love it) and these things showing up, holy fuck I'll never get tired of seeing all these new types of tanks that I had never heard about before.
Chihatan gets trapped and the camera movement and sense of depth here was pretty great (sorry, I'm too lazy to make WEBMs). We get some sweet character development right here, with Nishi ordering, in no roundabout way, for her team to retreat! Shocking, I say, top 10 anime betrayals! Where is the honor in that? Nah, really, it's great to see her acting as a genuine proper commander. End of episode, the moonlight guides them in their retreat path, just a short stop before they charge again on their way to victory!
Yeah, they'll beat Ooarai alright, I'm sure...

All in all, absolutely great episode (heh, there was no way it wasn't gonna be great to me, anyway), great directing, animation and, most of all, sound editing and mixing, all the tanks sounds and the soundtrack are so good to listen to!
This episode reminded me of how much I love Girls und Panzer, and the wait will be harsh, but I'll probably be reminded of that again when Das Finale part 3 comes out in another two years. See you there.

This part was just so skillfully made... It really was worth the wait.

Those two battles were, in my opinion, (and especially the end of the match with BC) some of the most masterfully made in the whole franchise. Between the interesting and well-chosen camera angles, the excellent animation, and the perfect sound mixing, they were just so pleasing to see.

love to see how Ooarai use mark 4 similar to Kuromorimine Maus at the end of the 1st part match and history repeat itself 2nd time with flag on top of the tank LOL rip mark 4.

PS: they miss the opportunity to put Bob Semple Tank on Koala Forest High School fight coz that would be epic if it on the show

That was intense! Battle against chihatan almost equally thrilling to movie Der panzer against universitas team. New style of chihatan spirit. I thought chihatan was done when they trapped on that mud hole but battle isnt over yet and we're on waiting game again.*sigh

Btw that petite commander of BC was really something. She can moving like that :0

this was great! We got the conclusion to the first battle and results of the first round. BC had an interesting dynamic which kept the match interesting.
The old schools we are used to all advanced, Im hyped to see Kuromorimine vs Pravda. I hope this gets its own OVA, or atleast its own part in one.

We had some nice in between with the characters fooling around which is always so very nice in GuP as well, even though Im usually not a big SoL fan. It was a welcome break before the next fight.

And the battle with Chihatan was amazing too. The POV scenes in the jungle are so intense. Oorai looks actually kinda screwed, Im curious how this will end. I doubt they will lose but Chihatan is really a strong opponent here.

I dont want to wait 2 years for the next one again. GuP is probably my favourite franchise but Im afraid I will be well over 30 by the time this OVA is done.
Then again its nice to see that this franchise is so alive and well.

The episode is so good but I'm pretty sure that I found it not worth the wait, 2 years for a hour less movie is overkill (And always ends with cliffhanger) granted that I watched it for free (Because I don't have any real choices, if it were shown at my theater, I would watch it everyday until the movie stopped showing)

I kinda didn't want to talk about the episode because it's obviously so good, probably one of the best action sequence in anime, but I want to address the future of GuP at this point of time, this is my hunch towards my most beloved fandom.

What I see is that this franchise is one of the healthiest franchise out there, Garupan is still #5 during C97 despite lack of content compared to other gigantic franchise (Frankly, GuP is just like Touhou right now)
What I am trying to say is that they really milked the franchise hard that it would eventually pissed some of their fanbase, honestly, the lore to this franchise is bigger than some of us think, look, Das Finale will end in 2028 and in the meantime, we won't receive any GuP anime while in my opinion they could just develop the franchise deeper and end this Das Finale as soon as possible, heck, we don't even have any knowledge about some of the current school while they brought up University Cup and World Cup a number of times, just... imagine the possibilities...

But bottom line, Episode 2 is ridiculously good but not worth the wait, they should've at least make it 1,5 Hours instead of 50 minutes, that way, the fanbases will be happier.

There are many factor why Das Finale was structured like this.

1. The "GuP Projekt" production committee are the ones who decided to do it like this. They have the final say in what they want to do with GuP.

2. Studio Actas is the animation studio doing GuP Das Finale and the franchise as a whole, a studio that is infamous of production delays in the projects they do especially if they are the ones in charge of them like Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars and Long Riders. Even the GuP TV series had production delays during its run in 2012. Actas does good work as long as they have the breathing room to do their job and not doing a TV schedule format.

3. Tsutomu Mizushima is the director of GuP who is integral of the franchise's success. But he also has projects between GuP that keeps him from focusing on it. Examples of which are Mayoiga, Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai and he recently finished the Shirobako movie for P.A. Works and I'm not sure what his next work will be but he will be directing the Kotobuki compilation movie(which will have new scenes on it) that will be shown in Japan theaters this coming Fall 2020.

4. This relates to Actas also since they are also producing the Princess Principal movie series which is also a 6-part format like GuP. Pretty sure they have a lot on their plate right now.

5. This is just an assumption but I think they are doing this so that GuP remains relevant.

As for me, I really love Das Finale Part 2 and was worth the wait. I don't really mind the long wait for each part since they always deliver on the goods. I'd rather have quality over quantity.

They did release many side-story manga that expand GuP universe. Some of minor school in tournament like Maginot, who was shown to have a match with Kuromorimine, has a manga that focuses on them. Characters from said manga also have a cameo in Das finale.

While you got those right, but I can't help but to feel anxious about the fate of this franchise.
With the current pace of Das Finale, I'm pretty sure it could only covers the Winter Cup and the anime will ends with it while in my opinion, like I said on my previous post, there are so much potential and uncovered lore to explore in this franchise. (And plus, a number of Manga) I understand that not every company want to make an anime for every source material they have but considering that GuP is one of the most healthiest fanbase out there, why not?

But don't worry, this is just my voice from the deepest part of my heart since I love GuP with all I have (Just take this as a brainless complaints hahaha) GuP is just very unique and I had never seen anything like it before, that's why I'm very addicted to it.

Man, it was worth the 2 years wait. But darn, it's been so fucking long.

BC School fight was stellar, sadly I feel that it ended too quickly seeing that they cannot adapt after the infighting. Their theme song is still one of the best in the series.

Chihatan fight was so-so in the beginning, but the entrapment scene was great.
This scene, in particular, combined with the sound FX IMO was amazing :

The formulas for these movies are quite basic on the surface but they are executed to such razor sharp perfection that they come out so entertaining and complex. Design wise this was extremely impressive, i don't think i've ever seen a show with so many female character designs and each looking like it had ample attention, thought and care in the design, the tank battles are amazing and i am especially digging those 1st person shots, wish there were more, really can't wait for the next one. 8.

Marie was really awesome. I have a crush on her hehe

It's too bad by the time she went serious they were already outmanned and outgunned. They fought well to the end though and she was cool even in the face of defeat.

Looking forward to episode 3. I hope I'm still alive by then and hopefully still alive by the time all the episodes are released. lol
