I was thinking about watching Triugn for the first time, and I was wondering what would be a better watching experience, watching thew old one first , or the new one? (not watching the new one is not an option)

Trigun Stampede is the retelling of the franchise, follows differently from the anime and manga

So it's your choice

I recommend watching the old one first so it will give you more appreciation, perspective and a good comparison while watching the new one, or atleast that's what happened in my case. But overall I don't think it really matters in which order you watch

The original is way better, that’s the way to go. But still, Stampede is pretty decent

I watched Stampede first and then binged the original. My honest opinion was that I preferred Stampede (of course, it’s going to have a part 2).

Trigun 1998 version is very episodic in nature and feels very much like an old western (they’re even dressed like cowboys lol and the architecture is the same). If I hadn’t watched stampede I would have been VERY much more confused on the plot. In reality the plot is here and there scattered between episodes.

Personal preference, I preferred the plot-driven aspect of Stampede. They took plot points from trigun and kind of turned it into a prequel (I saw kind of because Jeneora Rock for example that shows up in ep 1 of Stampede shows up at the end of at the end of trigun.) Trigun 1998 also came out before the manga completed so it has a different ending. I do like the 90’s look of trigun, but honestly Studio Orange has changed my opinion on CGI anime. It looked great.

It’s personally preference. If you like the vibes of a space cowboy western, watch Trigun original. If you would prefer a more plot driven anime, I recommend Stampede.

(But I think Stampede is better. Honestly both are worth the watch.)

I watched both series, firstly the 98 adaptation and also read the manga to completion. Both series have their charms, I would recommend watching the 98 adaptation if you prefer slower paced anime and comedic moments, Stampede has more emphasis on the scifi aspects of the series and the plot starts basically immediately. As for which series is similar to the manga, both diverge greatly from it: the tone of the first 20 chapters of the manga is far more similar to the 98 anime but the ending arc is completely different. Stampede still has an upcoming sequel and seems to be setting the stage to a similar conclusion to the one in the Trigun Maximum manga.

I think, just like with FMA 2003 and Brotherhood, both have their merits and are enjoyable works. The one you might like the most depends on your personal tastes, I slightly like Stampede more due to the scifi elements that I loved in the manga.

Stampede is portraying the events in much better way than the original. And also I never felt knives as a threat in original, but in stampede he was dam good + they are giving more info on plants in stampede which they never did in original.

I watched the original and honestly didn't really care that much for it, only the big moments really kept me watching till the end, and then I watched Stampede and loved it.

My sister watched it in the opposite order (in case anyone assumes recency bias) by watching the original after Stampede. While she enjoyed the original far more than I did, she did admit there were things she didn't quite like, especially the ending.

She thought Vash was better in Stampede, but Wolfwood was better in the original, which I agreed with.

Also I'd give Stampede a look to see what you think about it visually - people in this thread saying the animation is shit don't know the difference between animation and art style, because the animation itself is fantastic, and the overall 3D look is a personal preference (I personally love it).

'98 Trigun has great character dynamics, a fantastic soundtrack that's extremely unique, and takes more time to establish the character's personalities in the present before it sets up any backstory. Stampede integrates more of the backstory into earlier episodes in the series, but I can't praise much elsewhere. '98 Vash is given more chances to succeed, which justifies his moral code and shows off more of his enthusiastic side. Stampede's Vash fails too often to make the audience feel like he has any right to stick to his moral code, and his attitude feels mopey more often than not. Wolfwood is an interesting foil to Vash in '98 because he has similar values and a kind attitude towards others, but his attitude on how to deal with the enemy is different. In Stampede, Wolfwood feels like a generic pessimistic edgelord and loses any semblance of being similar to Vash. '98's Meryl and Milly were an enjoyable duo, with Meryl being the short-tempered, serious one and Milly being a cheerful optimist. Both weren't afraid to take action and help others, and their interactions with Vash and Wolfwood felt meaningful. In Stampede, we are given the duo of Meryl and Roberto. Meryl still has some determination in her actions, but she is often afraid of the situations around her. When she does muster up the courage to do something, Roberto stops her and mutters something pessimistic about personal survival being the first priority. Their interactions with Vash and Wolfwood do not feel impactful, and the characters seem to shrug off each other's suggestions rather than learn anything.
Stampede has a fine soundtrack, but it's nowhere near as distinct or memorable as '98's soundtrack. While I don't care for the use of CG and the character design changes, I don't think either is responsible for Stampede's shortcomings.

TLDR: Watch '98 Trigun. Stampede falls short in the places that made '98 Trigun great.

Definitely watch the original first; Stampede spoils a lot of the cool stuff from the original series pretty much immediately that is worth experiencing in the original.
I'd say the original is a better story, and lets you get to know the characters better, but Stampede was really interesting too, plus is has some really cool and interesting visuals, so personally I'd say watch both but definitely the original anime first :D
