| This was enjoyable. I love the opening, very energetic. I like the animation as well. All the girls are BEAUTIES Looks like this will be a dramatic love-triangle or harem. The episode is only around 10 minutes long, if we dont count the opening and ending. |

After watching the first 2 episodes (I dont read manga), I am extremely surprised that thats whom the male MC will end up with. She hasnt even made an appearance in the first 2 episodes, and I just wrote her off as a comedy extra character. But maybe she will be amazing once she appears. |

Either that or keep the ending while rewriting the entirety of the final arc. I don't like the author's vision but I respect it always. The way that it was all put together was really poor and coud've been done a lot better. Still, wishing for them to change, the story before the final arc was gold I also respect it, but still I want Joon Lee and Duna Lee be together in the end. |

| Holy shit. Why does Shiya straight up look like Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road? Am I the only one here who noticed this? I know the similarity is not THAT apparent in the KOR anime. But if you compare it with Madoka from the manga the resemblance is almost 1:1. I probably could've picked better pics to reflect the similarity better but rn these are all that I could come up with. But I think any KOR fan would see her design and instantly think of Madoka. I suggest googling Kimagure Orange Road and Madoka Ayukawa to see what I'm talking about. In fact, that's how I discovered this series in the first place. I saw another KOR fan post this girl's image on Twitter saying she looks too similar. It's not just her design. Even her personality is similar from what I saw in the first episode. Both are delinquent types and both seem to have a kimagure/whimsical type of personality where it's hard to read what's going on in their minds. And there are probably more similarities. The biggest difference is that Shiya is 20-something years old whereas Madoka in the anime is 15. And it's not just Shiya either. This other girl Zhu also slightly resembles Hikaru Hiyama, the romantic rival/friend of Madoka Ayukawa. However, in their case, they don't look as similar. If Shiya didn't resemble Madoka, I probably wouldn't think that Zhu resembled Hikaru. Hikaru and Madoka also form a strong love triangle with the MC of KOR. So there's potentially another similarity with the 2 series. So it is hard to say it's just a coincidence. There's a strong possibility that the author took heavy inspiration from Kimagure Orange Road and other 80's Japanese romcoms. Why? Because the similarity doesn't end with KOR. The fact that the MC lives with Shiya and other roommates gives me strong Maison Ikkoku and Hiatari Ryoukou! vibes. So I think the author was probably a fan of 80's romcom mangas/anime. It's hard to call this a rip-off. It seems like he changed things up enough to not be caught as a plagiarist. Which is probably a good thing. There is also another possibility. Maybe the author of The Girl Downstairs didn't originally draw the characters like this. Maybe it's the animation studio that took heavy inspiration from 80's anime and manga. Right now it's hard for me to say for sure. I was curious what a modern-day KOR anime would look like but after the passing of the author in 2020 such a thing seems like an impossibility. I guess The Girl Downstairs is the closest thing we'll get. I just wish it was Japanese-dubbed. I don't think I ever watched a Chinese anime before. |
