these two movies are about one person in 2 parallel worlds. the first one (boku ai) is about a kid who was influenced by the girl he likes into becoming a more reliable person like the parallel version of him that she liked; the other (kimi ai) is about a kid who lost his lover in an accident that caused her to become a ghost lost in space-time continuum.

(kimi ai) is practically the prequel to (boku ai) if you want a specific link between the two movies.

you said you were particularly confused with the letter scene in (boku ai). that scene was just summarizing (kimi ai)'s content for the protagonist. I too am somewhat lost as to for what reason, since he has no memory of those events and doesn't really need any imo.


so to summarize everything: in (kimi ai), the protagonist came up with a plan to reset the timeline of (boku ai)'s world, because it was the only world (that he knows of) where he and Shiori never met. then he chose the time when he's almost dead to shift to a parallel world and kill himself. doing so will allow him to be lost in the space-time continuum with Shiori. the only thing left to do is for someone to get prepare things in (boku ai)'s world. and Kazune was the only person that could do that (it was also because of her ulterior motives to have a life together with the protagonist). while it was not explained how she kept her memories or when she got them back in (boku ai)'s world, but she apparently did get them sometime before their highschool entrance ceremony. she prepared things to advance the plan and to keep protagonist from ever meeting Shiori, and had her happy life marrying the one she loves (the less reliable version of him precisely). the world of (boku ai) was clearly more advanced than that of (kimi ai), mainly because of Kazune's contribution. and after a long life, protagonist was put into a coma because his soul got stuck in the space-time continuum. now, nothing was explained as to how he and Shiori were set free, but for some reason or another, they were set back to their bodies. after the protagonist woke up, he realized that he had an ip adress that was left unchecked (it has something to do with his job apparently), he got a glimpse of Shiori's ghost which was set back to her time line, and he met the version of her that resides in (boku ai)'s world (she helped with his meds). it was certainly a confusing encounter.

well, all in all, the movie definitely left a lot of unexplained events, but that was necessary to keep the movies short and enjoyable at the very least.
