Not sure if they did this on purpose or just lazy but the gap in character designs between the main cast and the others is astronomical.

You look at Fuki, Commander, the butch girl, the ugly girl and their designs are so uninspired like mob characters. There's no facial features or unique traits.

Well, if everyone is super, no one is.

I’m pretty sure this is done intentionally as it’s easier to pick characters out for plot purposes. For instance, if you were to see anyone then on a poster amongst boring mobs, you’d be able to see them immediately due to their contrasting colors. However, suppose everyone was ramble, then it’d be significantly more difficult to see them.

Not to mention animating everyone to the same quality would naturally draw your eye away from the main action of the scene: eyes don’t holistically view but rather track all moving objects by shifting focus.

Amazing answer! Chisato and Takina and the group are their cast. So ofcourse they would have a lot of resources spent on them. One of the reasons why Lycoris Recoil had such an amazing run was because of the character designs of the main cast.

Character designs are story telling.
This is not mindless SOL, or ecchi harem.
Those side characters you describe as ugly are either irrelevant to the story, are supposed to be unlikable or are evil.

This logic can literally apply to any other piece of storytelling in existence. I think the only story that really has 10 out of 10 characters throughout their run is like Lord of the Rings lol. The character designs are fine, I mean at the end of the day the show is not a supernatural one with a lot of super powers etc, it is based on “realism” so obviously people would look normal and average.

Who cares, they are just the side characters that are annoying throughout most the anime, they don’t need to be designed uniquely.

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

If you can’t remember the character’s name, I think that implies why they didn’t have more time spent on their character design lmao.

I’m just echoing other replies, but I think it’s really a matter of how relevant they are to the story. Anime likes to make it easy to tell who you’re supposed to pay attention to.
